Either way, he very clearly did have a purpose and whether he was pursuing his first or second goal he did so with nothing but malice in his heart.
Brother in chirst, his grief and trauma manifested as absolute evil. He harmed so many people, destroyed lives of so many, killed so many, manipulated governments, enabled criminal underground to wreck havoc and at one point was close to starting a war, created a new reich, helped nazic almost start ww3. That's not hiding misery, that's using it openly to destroy as many lives as he can. His smile was was there to manipulate people with his looks and charm, he didn't smile because he solved his trauma. No disrespect but you need to live more and get more experience and find good role models who will show you a healthy life.
Johan Liebert is a fantastic character in that he's the perfect example of of the philosophy of nihilism personified couched in the exploration of trying to answer 'what is a monster' while forcing the audience to wonder if he was a product of nature vs nurture, and/or whether he really was just an ordinary person with unbelievable levels of charisma... or if really was the antichrist. Frankly, it amazes me to no end that such a fantastically evil character could be written that dwarfs shows us mere mortals the peak of 'painting it all black with malice'. Best part? compassion for his sister's plight is what probably drove him straight off the edge and into the abyss of indiscriminately wanting the whole world burned to the ground.
monster is on a league of its own, one of the best seinen ive ever watched. i feel like naoki urusawa is a genius, his story and plot in monster was so detailed, he got all of the historical details correct and was able to make it feel extremely realistic. i would not be surprised if a case like monster was to happen in real life lol
