feel sorry but the situation, if you find the street artist, beggar asked money or kid selling tissue or anything just said "sorry or Maaf " and also raise your palm , if they insist just ignore and never show afraid/scare body gesture as long you in the crowd area its save . Indonesian people also help if something bad happen .. okay enjoy my wonderful Indonesia.

I'm indonesian. Don't give them money. Just say no politely give them a smile and ignore them or walk away. These people usually work in a group . If you give them money,. he will most likely tell the others, and that's what happened to you. These people are not beggars,. They are just lazy people. Street musicians are still ok because they at least try to offer you something like music, and they are not too persistent asking you for money. Give them 2000 is enough. Dont give them too much, or more will come to you. You should expect this to happen in some crowded areas with street foods.

I didn’t really explain it well in the video - but the money we gave to the musicians! Some of them followed us since then all down the street. And then didn’t leave us alone all night 😂 there was probably 30 people or more who asked us by the end. But it’s okay, I kind of understand, I just don’t understand following me hahaha. 0:09 The Challenge
    1:58 Gorengan/Frieds Snack (there is fried banana, bakwan/fried vegie, tempe/tempeh, tahu/tofu) for Rp2000/piece.
3:15 Bakso Urat means tendon meatballs not rats, someone make the translation wrong in the subtitle. And yes its so good especialy you make it with instant noodle like indomie. The price for one bowl of Bakso 10-35 thousand depends the place and the meatballs.
7:35 Sate Ayam or Chicken Satay. It usually they charge 2-3 thousand/skewer depends the place.
9:12 The banana leaf one is Nagasari, it pounded rice with a piece of banana. And the plastic one is Tape Ketan Hitam or fermented black sticky rice. Usually they sell it for Rp 10.000/3Piece
10:30 Martabak Manis/Terang Bulan or sweet pancake. And Martabak Telor or egg pancake. And yes, different price is showed for the size of the martabak. Like Martabak telor, different price means how much you want the egg?(±1-5 egg and there is 2 different egg, chicken egg and duck egg) Or Martabak Manis, different price means what do you want to fill in your Martabak Manis? (Maybe coklat/choco, keju/cheese, strawberry, blubery, and many more)
13:02 you dont have to give them, tell them NO or MAAF/SORRY, if they still stubborn, just ignore them its fine.

The bakso was a bit pricy but still reasonable, that much would usually be 16k rupiah and you definitely got scammed for that sticky rice, paying 10k for some traditional dessert foods would get you as much as what both your hands can hold.
And I agree I don't think there's anything better than martabak, the only thing is that it'll definitely give you heartburn if you eat too much 🤣

maybe it would be better if you learn the local language a little, because otherwise it would be very difficult for you to communicate with the local people or the seller. and one more thing, be careful with the seller who differentiates the price between for local people and tourists, I think asking local buyers about prices is better than the seller, because the seller can differentiate prices between local people and tourists, which is obvious they give the price for tourists is far different from the price for local people. just to give advice to you and hi i am indonesian.

I have Australian family, all of them have common favourite Indonesian food.
    1. Rendang (go to Sederhana SA restaurant. if you're still in Jakarta, go to Pagi Sore restaurant in Cipete)
    2. Gado-gado (for some reason Australians like peanut sauce, don't order from Hotel, street food style only)
    3. Cendol (it's a drink, NEVER buy cendol from street vendor, Australians stomach and throat can't handle it)
    4. Martabak (telor and manis, any flavour is good enough)
    5. Sate (there are 2 main types of sauce, the peanut souce and Padang Sauce)
Not my recomendation, but........ you may try these:
Durian (it's a love or hate feeling, you can't be in between. You either love it so much or curse the fruit)
we don't eat pork, they say Babi Guling is a must especially in Bali.

Hi there Josie. This is my first time watching your video. As an Indonesian, allow me to answer some of your confusion in the video.
02:00 Gorengan means fritters. Everything that can be fried as a snack, we call it Gorengan. Goreng means fry/fried. There are so many kind of gorengan, like tahu goreng (fried tofu), bakwan (vegetable fritter), tempe goreng (fried soybean cake), ubi goreng (fried sweet potato), and the one you ate was pisang goreng (fried banana). Yes, all gorengan are best to eat while they're still hot.
03:15 There are many kind of bakso in Indonesia. The one you ate is the most basic bakso, albeit fancier, because I saw they had lobster bakso, which is not common. Some common variety of baksos are bakso urat (beef tendon meatball), bakso telur (meatball with egg), bakso iga (beef ribs meatball), bakso beranak (big bakso with small baksos inside), bakso keju (cheese meatball), etc. We also have different style of bakso, like Bakso Malang (a specialty bakso dish from Malang city) or Bakso Bakar (grilled bakso).
07:04 We call it Bajaj (read: bā-jāy) here, not Tuk-tuk. As the name suggest, the three-wheeled taxi originally imported from India. In India, they call it auto/rickshaw.
08:06 Es Teh Manis means Iced Sweet Tea. Es = Ice/Iced. Teh = tea. Manis = sweet. If you want it hot, you order Teh Manis Panas (Hot sweet tea).
09:23 The man was selling Tape Uli. It's a traditional snack consists of two things, the Uli (sticky rice in banana leaf wrap), and the Tape Ketan Hitam (fermented black sticky rice), the one in the little plastic packet. The Uli is quite bland, so you have to eat it together with the tape. Since the Tape is a product of fermentation, it has a quite strong sweet wine-like taste.
10:31 Biasa means regular. Martabak has levels depends on how much eggs used as the filling. Martabak biasa (regular martabak) use 2 eggs, Martabak spesial (Special martabak) use 3 eggs, Martabak istimewa/extra special use 4 eggs, Martabak super (Super special martabak) use 5 eggs. Good martabak sellers are the ones using duck eggs instead of chicken eggs.
Actually Martabak and martabak manis are two very different things. Martabak is an Arabian-Indian-influenced street food snack, which is a spicy folded beef (or chicken) omelette pancake, usually eaten with pickles as condiment. Martabak Manis or sweet martabak original name is Kue Terang Bulan (Moonlight Pancake). But since every Martabak seller also sells Terang Bulan, gradually people started to recognize the dessert as sweet martabak, and the original martabak is more popularly known as Martabak Telur (egg martabak). As for Martabak Manis, the most popular filling is the coklat kacang keju (chocolate-peanut-cheese) combo.
Btw, sorry for the many beggars on the street. Yeah I know, they can be very annoying most of the times. I suggest you to ignore them or just say sorry, because if you start to give money to the first beggar, the others will come to you and can be a bit pushy. I hope this matter won't ruin your overall travel experience in Jakarta.

    - Bakso, there are different kinds. I like Bakso Malang and Bakso Aci (this one made from tapioca/cassava flour and no meat). As for the type of bAkso you ate, I like it without toge (the big sprouts).
10:00 the sticky rice called ketan with tape (the black one), you dip the ketan into the tape or smear the tape on to the ketan.
    - martabak Manis : the classic combo is chocolate cheese peanut. Now though, there are more combination including matcha, red velvet, Ovaltine, silver queen. Oh Silver queen is a classic chocolate bar from Indonesia, try to get it from Indomaret/Alfamart, and Beng-beng..
    - martabak telur, the original one uses duck egg and beef, but it's quite expensive so some seller offer chicken egg and chicken meat.
Btw I like your enthusiasm... Have you try fruit based beverages/dessert ?

    Wikipedia
Martabak (Arabic: مطبق, meaning "folded") is a dish commonly found in Saudi Arabia (especially in the Hejaz region), Yemen, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei. Depending on the location, the name and composition of the martabak may vary.
In Indonesia, there are two types of martabak, namely salted/egg martabak which is made from a mixture of eggs and meat and moonlight which is usually filled with chocolate and cheese. In contrast to egg martabak, sweet martabak is a kind of cake or jam sandwich that is usually eaten at leisure as a snack. In Malaysia, sweet martabak (known as Apam Balik) is often served as a breakfast dish accompanied by a glass of teh Tarik. The sweet martabak known in Indonesia is not a kind of martabak. But it is Moonlight Cake. What people in western Indonesia (from west to west Java) misinterpret as sweet martabak, because it is usually sold by traders together with martabak.
