I just had my cousin over to practice guitar with me, and he asked me why I'm so good. I noted I practice every day that I can, I don't push myself to play stupidly fast unless I feel like it, and I'm constantly working on my technique. But he was using his thumb as a pick, and it had a nasty callus on it, and he was playing Seven Nation Army as fast as he possibly could, and his technique was off. But I was so proud of him for putting in the effort. Maybe someday we can jam together, and he'll look back and be like, "WHY WAS I LIKE DJ KHALED?!"
Dude for some reason you're the only RUclipsr that really makes the music theory click for me, using multiple modes to solo within the given chord really unlocked a new world here
In the 37 years I've been playing guitar, there's been ONE guitar teacher who's made Music Theory and the Circle of Death a lot clearer and made me able to learn it. And that's Shredmaster Scott. Hail Shred!! 🤘
I have been trying to understand greek modes by myself for almost 2 years. And today, finally,I have understand them. Shred, from Romania, malevolous thanks muahahaha.
Nice, some classic solos here, I am practicing again now, my elbow was messed up for a while, and recently I just scratched something very cool off of my bucket list! I got a couple of cheap diy strat guitar kits last year on Ebay for me and my daughter, she wanted to try hydrodipping and it was actually pretty easy to do, and her guitar looks cool. For me I always wanted to try a scalloped fret board so I replaced the neck kit with a cheap scalloped neck I bought, after I used it for a while I really loved it and decided to get the Yngwie artist series strat, I was on a list for a long time and just a few weeks ago I got a message that a 2021 model was available, I grabbed it up quick and love this guitar. Thanks for the tabs and tracks, going to get to work on learning Theory, I have been playing since I was a kid but always shunned theory and educating myself on music until a couple of years ago I decided I should really learn this stuff because my knowledge was so limited.
Might help some newbs to point out that in the Stairway example, G Mixolydian and F Lydian have the same notes as the A natural minor scale. In other words, when "playing to the chords" you're in a way just shredding on the A natural minor scale the whole time rather than the A minor pentatonic scale.
Listen dude Listen to me Listen to the music it's nott about telling your playing the wrong chords nit's not about the chords and who is the most technical it's about giving people what they like to hear. AND you are right music theory is something that needs to be practiced 69 minutes per day
I have no training or knowledge of theory but I can recognize scale, key, pitch etc. by ear. I know alot of different scales all by their sound, not their name. I call the scales blues, country, Egyptian, Spanish, Mexican etc.
More importantly if the mode is a chromatic extension of an integral than the mode shifts from sharp or flat to the corresponding pitch. The harmony is bound to the root chord but is an octave above or below unless it's atonal than the melody and tempo preclude the obvious.
Hey Shred, how do you know which mode to pair with a chord? In your examples, you told us to use Am Pentatonic, G mixolydian and F Lydian over Stairway tp heaven but how did you know that G mixoldian would sound good instead of say, Ionian. On a side note, Love your content and I hope you reach a mil!
My simple translation of all this lydian mixed-up-olian mumbo-jumbo is what is going on here is he is staying in the key. play chords in the key and play solo notes in the key. For example, if you stay in C ionian(white keys only), on the piano, you can basically play random 4-note chord patterns and run at will up and down the notes for the melody and it will sound nice, as long as you stay on the white keys. if you dont believe me, i'll make a 30sec video where i close my eyes and play the white keys randomly in random shapes and patterns. FWIW, my favorite mode is "E fridge door-ian" it is E phrygian but i also use the D dorian blended in. (i have many ad-lib keyboard jams on my autistic einstein channel, this is what i do, besides trying to learn guitar and summon demons)
This is something I wish I could learn. But struggle to understand. I get you can look at chart and see the 5th of that chord you are playing over... but how do you know to use Dorian? Or mixolydian or phrygian???!
Relative keys. If you move from E minor to G major or D mixolydian for example those are all the same notes (E F# G A B C D). To stay in key diatonically when you pick a different root note you change the scale shape to the one that is complementary to the one you started in. So if you do things like noodle around in G major and then slide up to A and start playing dorian you'll be in key
@@xkidgey thank you. Got me a lil bit confused more lol. Relative Minor is down 3 frets I thought. So if I'm going G Major up to A Dorian... then that can't be right. Thought if your in Major then you can go 3 frets (half steps... whatever u wanna call it) DOWN and play Minor and it exact same notes but different order. So G major down to E Minor is relative. But I also do understand that Dorian is 2nd interval of Major scale. But what's confusing me is that we are saying using circle of fifths... and fifth is Major interval of Major scale... so surely it should be Major every time. Pleeeeease help me lol. So flipping hard
Start with e minor scale on just the e string. Learn how to play the e minor scale starting from different notes. If you start the e minor scale on the 2nd fret of e string(f#)...congrats that's the locrian mode. Now start the e minor on 3rd fret (g) congrats that's Ionian mode. So on and so on.
THUMBSPANK.....the hottest new technique in the universe....j/k since starting watching you, the plandemic ritual has been applying improv to the chord progression , by applying modes... and trying to play the most "outside' shit I can... Is there a more triad based method? I guess I want to be the Jens Larsen of rock and metal........MUAAhaaa...
How do you remember scales like this? I can't remember shit and, aside from the pentatonic shape, I wing it and play notes outside. If I play a wrong note, I just pick another or bend. It does work out well, but progress is slow.
Phrygian is just minor with a flat second and Dorian is just minor with a sharp sixth, I think of them like that. Also in the spirit of just winging it you can play minor over all of those scales and it won't be 100% diatonic but perfectly acceptable, you're hitting 6 out of 7 notes
I'm at the point where I'm trying to grasp soloing with chord chasing as you do...but I'm at a bit of a loss...I think I'm doing something wrong. How does it work...do you play the scales when the chord is being played. For example jumping from A minor pentatonic when the A is being played and then jump to for example G minor pentatonic when the G is played and so on??
I don't understand what any of this has to do with circle of fifths. You're just saying to play any scale that works over a specific chord in a chord progression.
i don't know if you are jokig but they are the same scale with a different name, anyway it is more correct to say F# as it is the 6th of the A major scale (if you don't want it to be A B C# D E Gb G# A)

After practicing scales you eventually learn patterns when playing notes on the strings.
Phrygian is just minor with a flat second and Dorian is just minor with a sharp sixth, I think of them like that. Also in the spirit of just winging it you can play minor over all of those scales and it won't be 100% diatonic but perfectly acceptable, you're hitting 6 out of 7 notes

So a song is generally in a key so you can play chords to match, then you solo using the scale notes of the chord playing, correct?
But I can choose any scale I want as long as the root is the same as the chord? No, can't be cause the chords will be major or minor.
You got the idea….learn the chords in each key
