Nah. Horror games are more about directing and design work than visual fidelity and realism. Good lighting does help a lot, though.

Up until now we’ve really only had video games that *look* real. But this right here, this *feels* real
Which is why I feel like they'd end up adding the option to blur faces even if they got them nailed down perfectly. Same for GTA or COD gameplay with that level of realism.
Imagine how proud the developer must be having to go in Unreal 5 and explain that “no, this isn’t real or pre-rendered footage guys”
I'm still not even concerned about it being pre-rendered, I'm concerned on if it's real life or a game LOL

The game is so realistic when the enemy threw a smoke bomb my whole pc immersed me in that scene with its own smoke and flame
This would be a fantastic game for vr. You could potentially have a force feedback system controller that you wear to help simulate the feel of recoil, holding the weapons, the gear, interactions with in game artifacts.
Imagine you are wearing a set of gloves with micro-motors in it so it feels like a pistol is in your hand, or approximating a door knob requiring you to actually twist your hand to open it or throwing a hand grenade.

The initial outdoor shot is the best looking part of this. As soon as we see the flashlight illuminating interior objects, it's clear it isn't real life.
Still, very nice looking.
That outdoors shot, though, is actually impressive. I think it's the realistic background flora that sells it most.

I think that the blurring of the enemy faces is an absolutely brilliant solution to the uncanny valley problem. It makes sense in the context of a bodycam-style game, and totally removes the extra stress/work of trying to model realistic faces that match the realism of the environment. I'm cautiously optimistic about this game and this style as well!
wouldn't everyone being masked be a better solution? I guess it is subjective but I am not a big fan of the blurred heads.
@@memogui plays in to the bodycam
@@memogui its a stylistic choice, one which you're free to not agree with but personally I like it and I think masks are a bit unoriginal, whereas the blurring - as Evan said - fits stylistically with the game and is original
If you can't prove it then you should wait for launch
@@memogui honestly, I thought about this as well, but there are still more challenges like having to animate the masks to move so it looks like characters are talking and still having to animate eyes (depending on the style of mask). I think it's definitely the easier option that, in my opinion, works just as well for the style of game as masks would. Plus a lot of times in bodycam footage, faces are blurred anyway.

I assume the pixelated faces have an in-game explanation. I'm guessing the twist is that it's found footage that someone unrecorded in order to protect the identity of the people involved. It could also have a more paranormal explanation like some kind of entity unrecording people's faces as a way to erase all traces of them in history, which is a real thing called _damnatio memoriae_ (condemnation of memory).
I think it's brilliant when artists design things around technical limitations, like how Silent Hill added fog to hide the short draw distance and incorporated the fog into the story and lore. However, I can definitely envision a game using machine learning to make photorealistic gameplay, including human faces. I believe I'll live to see the day when video games will go past the uncanny valley, making gameplay indistinguishable from reality. It has already been done to some extent with landscapes and inorganic objects.

This would be amazing for a "found footage" style horror game. Maybe something like an SCP agent reviewing bodycam footage from containment teams trying to establish best practices and build tactics for future encounters with similar creatures. Each time you die, you pull out from the computer screen and the character says "and that's how ___ Team failed. How did it go for ___ Team?", que up the next video file, hits play, and you zoom back in. "What did they do differently?"
Best part, you aren't resetting the level, you're "respawning" All the damage you've done will still be there, your previous bodies will be there.

watching the first couple minutes of the video i thought this was for SURE going to just be ironic humor, given not only how realistic it is, and how i've never heard of this before despite the game "blowing up". but after getting the proof and seeing that it's available to wishlist on steam, i am blown away by how this game looks. some elements look game like "the animation of that dude running through the hallway past the open door), but that's it. this is incredible.
I believe the harder aiming is to make enemy's feel like an actual threat making the gameplay feel even more realistic
The exposure changes and limited dynamic range are genius. We have all watched thousands of low quality videos of real events. It is a visual language that we take for granted as authentic, and now applying that look to a game, our brains can’t help but be tricked.
Right, when information gets stripped-out it can sometimes look more realistic. I remember cycling through the effects modes during replays in Gran Turismo 3 and some of the effects that lean towards "90s music video" (like solarizing or posterizing) start to make you think that you're looking at videos of real cars. It's also the same with the FLIR AC-130 segments in COD: MW3 or FLIR in Arma3-it's hard to believe that you're not looking at actual combat footage due to the roughness of the information.
no this is actually how I see things with my poor eyesight

The graphical fidelity is nuts, but honestly the body cam and movement of the character is what makes it feel real to me. A lot of games in UE5 can look this photoreal but the bodycam / movement of this game is just... something else entirely. goes to show that its not just graphics that contribute to realistic feeling games. UE5 coupled with VR games is going to make the next few generations of games nearly indistinguishable from real life, but actually not just hyperbole. this pushes a step beyond and im sure whoever is making this is going to become very influential to the industry whether directly or indirectly.

Grafix have come a long way but when it comes to difficulty there's very few games that stand out. These days I try to go for what's considered to be difficult and not so much good looking. Souls games and games like DayZ stand out for me.
@@gravyd316 ultrakill exactly goes into category of hard games, even though its in early access and the hardest difficulty is not even in game yet
Not really. It’s all tame in the last six years. Real mind boggling evolution is from snes to n64 imo
@@gravyd316 most challenging game I’ve played recently is project zomboid and sea of thieves, gaming now is more focused on competitive multiplayer stuff
Indeed. Most AAA games turn out utterly broken at launch. It truly is mind boggling.
The "difficult to aim precisely" is part of the appeal to me. We've standardized how aiming and shooting works for virtually ALL FPSs and getting something that feels new, thoughtful and potentially more realistic sounds exciting to me.
Firing a real pistol anywhere near as accurately as you do in a call of duty game is night and day, recoil on a real gun makes it difficult to hit the same area twice in practice. So i honestly like it as a feature.
@@zakcritch8706 Agreed. This is far more true to life than the traditional fps aiming system.
Exactly man. We havent actually innovated in the FPS department all games are the same and are standardised. I like that this game is INNOVATING! This is what games like cod did when it first released, now it's just all the same no innovation!
Why can't any game developer make real life graphics like this with the supposedly "powerful" consoles we have now! It makes no sense!
@@Extreme2SwaggerHD boutta unoptimize a game so hard that your consoles/PC's fans will smoke harder than chernobyl. We've all had those games before, if you know'em name'em. I'm genuinely curious as to what is the MOST unoptomized game in history so far. Aside from Cyberpunk 2077. We all know that one lol.
Been waiting for the day a hyper realistic shooter would be made, The tech has been there for some time now.
Wow. That is very, very impressive. Unreal engine 5 is going to build some incredible FPS games in the future.
Whoever made the textures and lighting needs to get an award

Honestly, a horror game using this kind of pov and combat style could also be extremely good. The uncanny valley feeling would compliment whatever horror story they could tell

@@emanuellandin7403 now imagine that horror game in vr.
So like first encounter assault recon?
Paranormal Tales

Unbelivable how we got from actual pixels to these UHQ graphics and sounds
I actually really like the way the aiming seems to look in this game. It's not perfectly steady and centered with instant recoil recovery like a competition shooter firing a .22 race pistol (looking at you, call of duty). Real recoil management with a .40 or .45 handgun isn't easy, and rapid firing under stress will lead to a low hit rate. I hope they keep it this way instead of holding your hand with a big hit box or major aim assist. It will encourage people to think about the shots they fire and be cautious. Double tap, pace your shots, watch your sight picture. This fits the theme of the game and furthers the realism.
The shakiness of the camera and the hands is really what sells it. Having detached hands is kind of genius, since you don’t need to have 40 keybinds for all kinds of movement options.
Yep and also the lighting and gi
Yeah unfortunately it clearly sucks to play a game with all the camera shaking.
The shaky camera, the lighting, and the animations are doing a LOT of heavy lifting here. The texture and stuff once you pause and look at them are nothing particularly special but the combination of everything around them REALLY sells the experience.
Yeah, I noticed the windshield on the truck in the warehouse was a literal mirror. Way too clean.
That's the magic of the graphics business.
It's like taking a wide shot picture or video and adding blur to the outside edges so only the center is in focus - making the entire landscape look like a miniature model.
same thought!
So this is what we have been waiting for! A very realistic graphics. Man we are living in the future
Bruh, that game looks so real, definitely gonna grab it when it comes out
Once he turns on the flashlight, you can tell it's a game. But when he's just outside that building, it's uncanny.
Also that door kick.
@@DH-xw6jp reminds me the Mirror's edge kick
I think it gets a bit obvious because a real cheaper camera like this would definitely show noise when its filming in dark areas. but yes, the part outside is ....just crazy
@@cyborgchimpy Oh man, compression and sensor noise shaders would actually be a crazy slick trick for a "photorealistic" game, and probably pretty easy to implement too.
The biggest contributing factor to the realism is the very low dynamic range that comes with small sensors on body cams, and the slow auto-exposure. Also small lens artifacts and spots on the lens
I noticed they had already added the slow auto-exposure, but I didn't notice the artifacts and spots xD
The biggest contributing is very natural camer movement.
@@testerjohnson7940 I was thinking the same. We've seen incredibly detailed environments like this before. It's just how real the movement looks and feels.
textures and lighting left the the chat
@@maksklinec as much as the textures are insane, we’ve seen brilliant textures before. we haven’t seen the emulation of cameras like this before
killzone sniper rifle. a good example of a floating aiming reticle. weird but it works.
When I saw the original video, I assumed it was some sort of live-action sketch and forgot about it shortly after. The fact that the game footage isn't real has my brain spinning in circles.
The part walking up to that building and checking your gun before entering is just insane
The first time I saw that intro I was like "nah, that's just body cam from someone playing Airsoft.... and then he started shooting and dropped an opponent. The camera sway while he walks, the vaulting over an obstacle, and especially the imperfect gun handling particularly while firing, it's all so incredibly well done. The gun firing flashes are a little underwhelming, and the barrel smoking looks a bit overdone though. But even to have barrel smoking, I don't recall even seeing that in a game before. Can't wait to see it released. I'm just getting my feet wet in UE5, but there is SO MUCH to learn!
And whoever is building those levels, you have my RESPECT, that is some seriously intense work there. The textures and the physical detail are top shelf. I'll be happy when i can get some grass that doesn't look like large blobs of paint on a flat canvas!
@@nathanfisher6925 I've seen some games have smoking barrels but its so few I can't remember exactly. I know a lot of WWII games had it, but mainly with MG32's etc.
@@nathanfisher6925 pretty much any game that has an overheating function for a weapon has a smoking barrel upon overheating. That’s pretty much all I can think of though, it’s very cool.

Nice video, the game looks good.
I have seen videos like this since the early 2000's. And games never end up looking like this. Ever. It's fascinating.
Some of the models kinda give it away, but the movements are PERFECT
As a 3D Artist myself the change in exposure takes the cake. The subtle camera shakes, The shaky hand movements, most importantly the "Gopro" effect takes it to a next level. Great work dude.

@@Smitekk Nice to meet you president.
For the last time, this is not real life graphics, its a distorted body cam filter. Its like VHS filters when the backrooms were a thing.
imagine that in VR
Can someone explain why it looks realistic. The fact that it's shakey isn't the reason. Something else is.
This looks incredible, I was genuinely speechless when he went and basically proved that it wasn't pre rendered.
When did he prove that???
@@mattyward1979 what? He showed actual gameplay in UE5 scenes
@@electrickrypt Did you even watch the video?
@@SHAITfam This video? Of course! But where's the alleged video of the developer "HOLDING" a controller? 🤷♂️
Skynet is finally here
I remember the footage well, figured many games will be this realistic within a few years
For me the main reason why this looked so realistic wasn't because of the graphics but because of the shakiness. We're used to seeing extreme stability in our games, but here we can see almost every movement has some amount of shake or unstableness to it. It's distorted it shakes. The imperfections giving the perfect deal of realism.
@Asp7000 can;t reply negatively to the most upvoted comment
I can't help but agree. The reason why this looks so "realistic" is more down to them focusing on making it look like a lens over the usually process.
In fact, I would say the game would look even more believeable if you lowered the quality to say 240p.
What people often don't realise about realism is that graphics aren't what make something realistic it's the movement that does it.
This really is incredible. I could see how a game like this could cause real anxiety.
@@adrenalinejunkie3828 a lot of that ddefinitely does come from immersion though, which realism and animation can really contribute to.
