How To: Jayson Tatum Sidestep 🔬

- Don't get me wrong, this move is a tough one. It's simple, but also extremely difficult to refine and add to your bag. But once you get good at it, you'll have a go-to move that you can constantly get rhythm out of on the perimeter.

Now if I could only figure out how to go to my right. I think his 6'8" frame helps along with the 6'11" wingspan to easily get off shots.
Facts
Yeah I think it’s tougher for righties to do it on the right side of the court because your body isn’t aligned to shoot as well. Size definitely helps too
@@Simon_Sez same for me. Crazy how tatum can align his body like that
that's my go to

What the duck are u doing here ur always at the most random comment section
Tatum learned this from cp3 Drew Hanlan and Bradley Beal but he’s 6ft 8in which is ridiculous young tmac/Kobe
bra yu just talkin yu dont kno where he learned this from lol
Literally videos on RUclips of them practicing that particular move with drew lmaooo you’re a clown learn how spell my son
@@patrickbarthold359 imagine liking ur own comments lol nd if yu were smart yu would kno nobody types tha full words out on tha internet goofy this aint school yu understood every word i typed old head lol
Lmao Im only 24 it’s just that I hold my self to a higher standard unlike you my son it’s all good though 😂😂
Jay smooth one of the best young talents in the league
James Robert no not the best
James Robert luka
James Robert 1. Him and Luka are close either way he was in the MVP conversation tatum wasn’t even close so stop being bias 2. Trae is on a losing team of course he’s gonna put up numbers 3. Tatum being a top 5 defender is laughable players like Simmons are way better at defense tatum better but for defense no way is he a top 5 defender that’s a dumbass thing to say 😂
James Robert your just a fan boy If you can’t except that Luka is at least very close than I’m done talking to you not to mention the top 5 defender in the league bullshit
James Robert a lot of that is because he’s on a really good defensive team that helps I can’t change your mind tho because your so far delusional some fans are just to bias to have a convo with
When I think of the side step, I actually think of Chris Paul. He seems to do it the best to me. Especially when switched out on the big.
Yes sir him and James harden do it the best by far
100%. He has to be better at it to get it off because he's so much smaller
jp3 James’s harden does do that
That’s good news for us short guys
buymeaskyline explain
He’s perfected that move so well
As a long time subscriber, I just want to say that your channel is amazing. The way y’all impeccably break down the game of basketball is amazing. To offer such great information to RUclips for free has helped me improve immensely as a basketball player. Thank you for everything that you have done and will continue to do. BALL IS LIFE. 🏀
What are y'all's favorite moves? 🔬
MJ/Kobe Fade
skyhook of course
Midrange pull up
AI cross, or Jamal Crawford shake & bake
Stephs behind the back is CRAZY
Excellent 👍 breakdown 🔬 as always.
Cp3 loves this move!
Love doing the side step jumper it so clutch at creating space and when you do it mid drive it almost always catches the defender off guard
love that podcast!
Dame has the greatest side step of all time. He can do it out the triple threat or size up💯
I love your videos they're really entertaining but i would like to see more player comparisons of often debated players
last time I was this early, the warriors were unstoppable
Tom Brady was only 50
But if they stopped being unstoppable how could they then be unstoppable in the First place?
@@martinmikkelsen8183 If someone said that Jordan was unstoppable, it's not an argument to say since he's stoppable now that he was never unstoppable.
This The Video I Been Waiting For🔥
If you keep both feet on the ground as you do your last dribble before doing your sidestep, it also makes it much more unpredictable for your opponent, b/c you can lift either foot and then sidestep, giving you a 2-way guessing game (3 if you include the drive); harden was great at this.
I noticed a thing that's quite interesting. In almost every stepback he does, he jabs to the opposite direction of he's stepping back to, whether it's during live dribble or triple threat position. This gives him extra space that he needs to get the shot off. Agreed?
you should make a vid about off the court workouts: sand workouts, track workouts, balance workouts and other stuff thats more specialized. i dont mean like gimmicky stuff either.
Here before JT wind MVP!
Something I noticed while watching this to add it to my bag, that when against players with similar builds (mainly wings) he almost always pushed with the foot closest to the front foot. I assume that it's because the best way to sell the move is by making the defender instinctively believe that you are going to attack the front foot to generate more separation by slowing their reaction time.
DeMar does this more too . Great video . Good work . Add more voice overs . Good work . Thank you coach
Tatum will be the best player in the nba in 7 years
He definently has potential
Idk about the best but he'll def be up there
@Edgar Alvarez He's only 22 tho
y'all sleepin on Luka
@James Robert hardens defense is actually average if you check advance stats
fire breakdown
can we get a breakdown of what makes devin booker so lethal?
I was doing the side step just for fun but now its built into my throw and just feels more natural for me. My shoulder is always facing the basket when I do it.
I'm a pretty good shooter, but I tore my meniscus a few years ago (Not bad, but suboptimal "I'm 18 and can do what I want" footwork- too bad I was 20 and gained a few pounds), so when I started rebuilding my footwork to better suit my jumper I was watch a celtics and saw Jayson pull this out of his bag and I was like... I like that, and I can do that.
It took like 3 months before I could reliable get this shot of going to my right as a righty in a game. In practice yeah, could drain 10-12 in a row either direction, even as a righty i prefer to go to my right, but in a game I shot like Spice Adams or James Harden in the playoffs.
It was 100% worth learning though.
Tatum is a cheat code. So tall, athletic and skilled
I've been practicing this move prior to the lockdown. It is harder than it looks because of staying balanced to get the shot. I'm getting there I believe.
P.s. Background music of your videos is ALWAYS dope.
putragis08 it’s a mean move. When I sail Chris Paul do it, I copied it and was surprised at how effective it was at getting you that little bit of lateral space so that your defender has to guard at an angle. Not a good spot to be at on defense.
This got recommended to me 7 months later 30 minutes after the JT side step over Giannas in their first game of the 2020 season
Ight ima go try it now
The iso-travel. Nice
More jayson Tatum pls
Keep doing videos . Good job bro😎😎
Cool 🆒 breakdown
he posted 🙏🏽
THANKS :)
Make video regarding moves for guards
omg iv been waiting for this
PLEASE HELP im elite w this move stepping right (left handed shooter) but cant find out how to align my body going left
can u do sharife cooper next please it would be amazing if you could
the one before last - carry
I clicked faster than Flight saying "look at curry man"
Its even better for smaller guards
Could you please lover down the intro volume please (0:39) . It is blasting my ears after listening what you say. Great content as always.

Dame and Cp3 do this well. Kyrie added it to his game too
bro kyrie had it since that clutch three on steph
Mine is between the legs shift,in and out cross, pullback ,Isiah Thomas half spin
So kyrie other move basically
Yes sir
Im VeXz u were the first congrats
a key step also is that he always go away from the top foot
ayy 💯
I need a jrue Holliday breakdown
I would guess about 90% of NBA guards can do the moves stepping to their off-hand (left for right handers), but less than 10% are as good going to their shooting hand side: Beal, Harden, Young, Tatum.
Sidestepping to the right when you're a right handed shooter. Feels awkward so that's what I'm practicing. Sidestepping to the left is easy.. This is an idea for a video tutorial !
Exactly. I’m much more comfortable stepping to my left
Vice versa with lefty’s 🤦🏽♂️
@@driplordjay510 yea same thing. what i meant to say was sidestepping to your dominant shooting hand is tough. there are drills to practice though. it actually is easy for me now
🔥🔥🔥
sharife cooper next !
Also the fact that he pushes off on almost every possession helps. They’re definitely nice moves but 60% of the time it’s a push off and the refs don’t call it.
In the Future we will see Tatum vs Luka in the NBA Finals
5 yrs from now
Please I am french and i need a traduction in french if i'ts possible.
W video
Got that from kyrie
Here after he used this to drop a game winner over giannis
Whenever someone give him a top foot, he sidesteps away from it 🔍
On everyone He’s stepping away from the defender front foot.
I think Chris Paul uses sidestep too
People think Harden and Luka are the king of stepback/ sidestep 3s, but Tatum is way more efficient and shot 9 per game from Febuary on. He has a chance to be near Curry like dominant from 3 in his prime
Harden is the best 2 luka 3 arguably dame or Tatum.
can you help me out? I'm choosing to blow up my shot and start anew by trying to learn to shoot above my forehead. Feels like it could open up many doors but it feels like i have no fluidity or power.
Don't shoot the same from three as you do midrange, it'll screw up your power. Watch videos of MJ shooting threes (late career when he became a better shooter) then midrange. His setpoint is completely different and way more one motion. It'll just take thousands of reps to get used to the power transfer, I did the same as you a year ago and now I'm comfortable from deep and contested midrange shots, fade ways off the left shoulder are still pretty tough for me though.
@@vinuzo9548 Thanks for the pointers, I'm definitely gonna put in more reps to get used to the power differential
Chris paul does this move too, but tatum is more efficient cause of his height and wingspan
Can you do a Paul George breakdown pls?
He already had that one check out his channel
kyrie jt cp3 the masters
He's Celtic Breed to be a Lean Mean Green Machine! #Banner18
I Used this in a pick up game, its unguardable gotta try it in a minor league's soon🇵🇭

Bet ya kobe didnt neither. He just pushed.
Congratulations to you tho.

Anyone watched his sidestep 3 against Raptors game 7 tn? Looked like a travel. Took like 4 steps
Is there an age to start playing basketball

Did this in my league and got called for a travel, what did I do wrong?😑
Maybe your steps.
This is a travel in any league but the NBA.
3:12 double step back. 3:49 double sidestep
Does he even know anymore🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️🤣
The side step is overrated, step back is way more effective than this. Half of the time he be taking difficult shots.
its james harden move!
lol that noob harden is traveling
Sheesh, 14 minutes ago
First
Give life to Jesus Christ Jesus
copy from james harden..
How to travel. Of course it's unstoppable... cuz he's taking additional steps to get his shot off. "Gather step/0 step/pinoy step, no step" nonsense. 😒
And you’ll continue to get cooked by it 🤣
On everyone He’s stepping away from the defender front foot.
That’s because it stunts the defender
