      Actually it becomes what it used to be... an event for amateurs. Which is what it should be.

      @JeremyCuddles Yeah I agree. Hard to go back. And I'm not ignorant to the fact that there was a lot of slimy dealings, especially from the Soviet block nations in the 70s and 80s. I guess I just feel the spirit of the games is somewhat ruined. I suppose if one takes the approach that it is indeed the country's "finest athletes," then it's easier to move forward with the professional element. I just thought the earlier epochs of the Olympics meant so much more. But it's too hard to maintain that in the top sports given the feeder system now in place in the various major sports leagues.

    • @curtdude7
      @curtdude7 5 лет назад +1

      SpikeFlea no. It should have the best athletes to represent your country

    • @TheWitchOvAgnesi
      @TheWitchOvAgnesi 5 лет назад

      @@curtdude7 Well, yes, in the current approach. My point is that it should have stayed all amateur (though there was corruption as has been pointed out). But nowadays, it's impossible not to include professionals because the best talent are already in feeder systems for the major sports.
      I guess I'm just reminiscing about the Miracle on Ice era... LOL

      SpikeFlea in any approach of the olympics it’s been your best players or best athletes a country could field. This even goes back to a nicer Greece when they started the Olympics to see which city state or Polis was the most dominant physically.

      The Olympics used to be only amateurs, then in the early 70’s Russia (USSR) were using some professional athletes. Canada challenged Russia to the Summit Series where the best professional hockey players in Canada vs Russia’s. Olympics decide then after to open the olympics to professionals for the best of the events

    • @AV57
      @AV57 5 лет назад

      The idea of the Olympics has always been to compare and contrast different schools of thought and training. Did Sparta truly create a breed of indomitable warriors or could they be bested by the liberal democracy of Athens? You can showcase that best with amateurs since amateurs typically haven't had the opportunity to travel to other areas and absorb foreign techniques and cultures. Ovechkin is a great example of how professionals might not give you a clear indication of what players have been taught by their home countries since much of Ovechkin's growth as a player is due to his professional career outside of Russia. The best gauge for determining which country is churning out the best hockey is the World Juniors--not the Olympics, even when all the professionals are playing.

      I dunno man. He's arguably the greatest goal scorer to ever play, but he's not one of the top players overall. He's very one dimensional. Howe, Gretzky, Lemieux, Richard, Crosby, Jagr, McDavid, Yzerman, Beliveau, and Federov were all better, plus all the defencemen like Orr, Lidstrom, Harvey, and goalies like Hasek and Brodeur etc. It takes more than excelling at one thing to be a true GOAT. The guy has three Harts as well. Give me Prime and career Ovi over Federov, Lidstrom, Jagr, Harvey, Yzerman, Richard, Béliveau, Crosby and McDavid (lol on that one haha prisoner of the moment much?) all day wether it's for durability reasons (your best ability is your availability), peak reasons, outright legacy reasons or all of them combined. All these players you've named other than Gretzky can be matched some day. There will always be the next Crosby or Mcdavid. Finding the next threat to the goal record will take a LOOOOOONG TIME. He's easily a top 10 player ever. I've heard it said that NHL owners want to have some sort of NHL branding right to use their players at the Olympics, but the Olympics committee refuses to cave on that. The Olympics wants the NHLers for the obvious ratings boost and the NHL wants their players there to market the NHL to that demographic of sports fans that watch the Olympics but aren't yet sold on hockey, in particular, but the two sides can't figure out how to properly compensate the NHL for their cooperation. The Olympic committee seems to believe that just letting NHLers show up is enough--the NHL owners don't.

      @JeremyCuddles I think it's great. He's never been as light as he was in his rookie year and when you go watch his highlights from his rookie season it was his speed that created his scoring chances, not his heavy hitting. He backed defenders down because of the quickness. Hopefully he regains that speed and can keep up with the game better.

    Over the 18 seasons that Ovechkin has played we have seen 31 times where 50 goals were scored during a season. He has 9 of those and 4 times has led the league as the ONLY 50 goal scorer. In those 18 seasons we have NEVER had more than five 50 goal scorers in a season.
    During Gretzky's 20 seasons we saw a combined 131 times for 50 goal seasons. There were 13 times where we had 6 or more 50 goal seasons with a high of fourteen 50 goal scorers in one season!
    So 131 times versus 31 times. Ovechkin had 9 seasons of 50 goals out of a pool of 31 times. Gretzky had 9 seasons of 50 goals out of a pool of 131 times.
    Ovechkin's goal totals are far more impressive than Gretzky's when you consider the era and look at the facts.

  • @AV57
    @AV57 5 лет назад

    With Ovechkin's shot, he basically just needs to stay smart and stay in relative shape and he can always pick up a solid 20 goals on the power play. If he gets within sniffing distance of the record, he may as well just hang around until he gets it. It would be like when Hank Aaron was chasing down Ruth's record.

  • @8JFJK8
    @8JFJK8 5 лет назад +1

    Okay, say he falls short a few years. Maybe he gets 4 more 40 goal seasons. I think he easily has it in him. That would put him around 160 more goals. Then maybe he gets 2-3 more 20 goal seasons as well. That basically puts him at the mark. Its all about health, and the next 4 seasons hes got to keep sniping away.

      In four years? Maybe. But if he plays another 10 years, which is completely doable, then I'd be surprised if he doesn't catch up. I doubt anyone will break Gretzky's point record or season records in the near future, but it looks like total career goals could be surpassed.

      @@sphenopalatineganglioneuralgia I don't know that Ovie can play until 44, but you never know.
      It just seems now more than ever with the cap there's a reliance on young players that are cap friendly. Games also faster. After 35 guys seem to take a sharp decline. More players are pushed out of the game earlier than ever. But Ovie is still one of the best in the game so if theres any 34yr old can hang around for another 10yrs it's Ovie. But I think if he plays until 40 he could maybe still get 238 in 6 yrs. But it's still pretty impressive that gretzky retired at 38 because of a bad back. I know different era more goals but also a lot more obstruction interference and leeway to stop a guy from scoring back then. Not to mention PP face-offs used to start in your own end back then.
