The great Scottie Pippen used to say Tayshaun was the player (jn early 2000s) who reminded him the most of himself. That is how great (and underrated Prince was)
I had a homeboy in Georgia who went to high school with Tay in California. His car was beat up. Tay told him to pick out a car and paid for it. He gave me the championship shirt and hat he had on when they won in ‘04. I’ve always heard good things about Tay but when Mike told me that, it confirmed that Tay was a down to earth, good dude. Look me up Mike!!

I really respect tayshaun didn’t get emotional but took it personally to handle his job. I respect that, we all not Kobe’s in this world but that don’t mean you can’t show up and do your thing like tayshaun

@younglove3362 Kobe was the leader is total points throughout the whole playoffs. Like I said, Shaq was being petty and it was basically Kobe carrying him, the Pistons were just a great defensive team, and Kobe's 2nd option didn't feel like being a 2nd option.
He did an incredible job against Kobe in that finals series

The entire team did. Watch the videos and you’ll see they planned the entire defense on Kobe and Shaq.
@@supercsim Most of Kobe's misses came against Prince. Yes, it was a team effort by arguably the best defensive team of all time, but Prince did exactly what he said on the video and Kobe struggled.
@@davidschmidt227 I just rewatched these finals out of curiosity. No man, just no. What I saw was Kobe trying to force feed Shaq and then trying to get in rhythm at the end of games. The entire team was collapsing on him and double teams. They basically focused their entire defense on Shaq and Kobe. It wasn’t Prince. Obviously, he was a part of it. But if he didn’t have that entire team supporting him, Kobe would have smoked him. As he did every year after these finals. Watch the games man.
@@supercsim I have watched the games. Kobe trying to force feed Shaq? More like Kobe trying to win the Fmvp by himself you mean. If he hadn't taken so many ill advised shots and actually focused on passing more to the guy who was shooting over 60% from the field, they would have had better chances. The Pistons ran a sagging off man to man defense, they didn't run zones and hardly ever double teamed. They collapsed the paint like every other team and sagged off to prevent penetration. They barely doubled team at all, although by sagging off, there is added pressure on the offensive player who had the ball. The Pistons played as a team on both ends, they didn't simply have Kobe isolated against Prince in a corner while everybody else watched.

No one shut down Kobe. But, Tayshaun was an incredible defender. He’s one of my favorite team players. Had handles, hit clutch shots, was long, and played excellent defense.

Kobe average 22.6 points on 22.6 shots a game. 38% from the field. 17% from 3. 40% effective fg. Series tied 1-1, scores 11 in game 3. Lower offensive rating for the series than Medvedenko & Devean George.
Tayshaun did a fantastic job. His arm length and frankly effort really frustrated Kobe. Primary reason they won the series.
The other being Shaq not able to guard away from the basket.

Shaq could not guard outside the paint. He was running far more than he was used to. Didn’t really matter for his offense. If he was fed the ball like normal, he probably still drops over 30 a game.

Tayshaun was the truth defensively , and lets not forget Corliss williamson didn’t know anybody on the lakers was alive in the post.
They actually came up with hunting Kobe to get him on Big Nasty in the post….sort of like what they do with steph sometimes….They had a great gameplan.

Tayshaun flipped the Pistons season forever with that block and run down on Reggie Miller, and in the finals Kobe was dribbling too much, Tayshaun got him doing too much, effective traps and balanced defense,well coached, great timing

Tayshaun was definitely one of my favorite players on that 04 team.
Could have been more of a scorer, and had glimpses of flashiness, but chose to do what the team needed to win.
Also it's still wild to me that his post-playing career is an assistant GM for the Grizz.

They used real live "Kobe Rules" which started with game 3. There were 2 rules, but they absolutely got Kobe bent out of shape, which led to the deeper, more diabolical part of the plan. Chauncey said what that part of the plan was in an interview, but I don't think many caught it or actually believed it. But he told the truth. The real question is "where did that plan come from?" If you just assume the obvious answer, that would be incorrect...

It was more that Ben was able to guard Shaq with no help. So everybody else was able to guard their own man with confidence

Excellent defender. Probably one of only 3 or 4 players that could slow Kobe down. Him. AK-47. Marion. And Bowen.
All Kobe had to do was help make sure Shaq (prime Shaq) got the ball. Shaq was shooting 63 percent during that series and you'd think that, by game 4 Kobe would've thought "let me stop TRYING to be THE man and get the ball to prime Shaq who is truly THE man" but, nah, Kobe got tired of living in Shaq's shadow and kept shooting.
And Prince locked Kobe down pretty much by himself. Watch the series.

Kobe takes a lot of the heat for that series. But Shaq flat out got exposed. I don't know how people don't talk about that, he went up against straight bum centers during that 3 peat. The issue is that Kobe didn't help get Shaq the ball. I think he put up 40 more shots than Shaq who, again, was shooting 63 PERCENT for that series.
Kobe tried to get a FMVP by shooting bad shots and making sure Shaq didn't get the ball.... and it failed.

Kobe should have attacked Tayshuan more than he did but he settled for way too many contested jumpers. Ginobli attacked the rack every time Tayshaun was guarding him during the 2005 finals and we all know how the 2005 finals ended.
What players today talk about out playing defense… defense… with such passion and detail?
Not taking anything away from Prince he caught Kobe at the right time after three straight finals probably little exhaustion set in after beating Spurs probably felt like they already won the championship.
The worst loss I've ever experienced as a fan. We lost to Spurs, later Celtiics but this was the worst one. Because of how well they played as a team, the Lakers looked so out of place. Team chemistry was the factor in those finals.
Kobe shot 38% that series and, at one point, seemed to quit. That Pistons team was nasty.
It wasn’t YOU. The entire team defense was perfect in those finals. No one player could stop Kobe.

Fun fact: After the '04 Finals, Mark Cuban implored the league about how the Pistons were allowed 2 guard Kobe w bumps & hand checks on drives. The NBA eliminated hand checking the nxt season & it backfired on the Mavs a yr later. Now I think it's all fluff, as the Pistons were just allowed 2 hack Kobe, hand checking or otherwise. That style of play hadn't been allowed in any LA series' prior. DET was just allowed 2 play a style of defense LA wasn't. I remember on 2 jump balls, including the opening tipoff of the series, Shaq (highest % of jump ball wins in NBA history) was ruled as jumping early, automatically awarding the possessions 2 DET. Their fans went crazy! Having never seen that b4, I KNEW it was over. The NBA & media wanted Shaq & Kobe separated. So when mentioning LA vs SAC & MIA vs DAL, include DET vs LA too [& MIA vs OKC (Do your research)].
Using the '06 MIA Heat 4 comparison as they are the universal standard & prime example 2 fans of cheating, so get this:
In '06, MIA shot 52 more FTA than DAL & DAL had 18 more PF's in 6 games. DET shot 60 more FTA than LA & LA had 39 more PF's in FIVE games in '04. Rip Hamilton, Billups AND BEN WALLACE all shot more FT's than Kobe. Ppl disclude this series bc of the underdog element & being happy w a different champion in view of LA's dominance. It's also convenient when projecting Kobe narratives.

I always wonder if Kobe allowed himself to be traded to Detroit for Rip Hamilton in 2007, what the rest of his career would have looked like. The starting lineup would have been Billups, Bryant, Prince, Wallace, McDyess. Sounds like a championship squad to me.

Kobe is my favorite player of all time. But he GAVE the pistons that ring.. he literally chose not put up shots and play to his talents to spite shaq as they were beefing. If they were on the same page they would have won it easily. This is one of the very few reasons why I always put MJ above Kobe. Mj would never let his stubbornness get in the way of winning a ring. Hurts me to say.

What people don't know about the 2004 Finals is it was semi scripted for Kobe to get the FMVP if he performed well. They PURPOSELY limited SHAQS touches. Kobe wanted his FMVP so badly he tried to do too much..leading them to lose. Lakers were supposed to win that series. It was supposed to be Kobe's arrival moment. Same thing in 2008.
