Heathers the Musical is based on one of the most iconic teen films of all time and recently completed a successful five month run at Royal Haymarket Theatre in London. The award-winning writing team Laurence O’Keefe and Kevin Murphy’s hit musical adaptation has enjoyed successful runs in Los Angeles and New York.
“It’s not too late.”
Three people are dead, Veronica.
I just like to imagine Heather Chandler sitting behind her filing her nails and raising her eyebrows at that line and saying "I'm literally dead but go off I guess"
😂😂💀 I chortled...

The whole school could have been blown up but go off i guess

This is performed before she knows JD tried to blow up the school.

"but I love you" "DUDE" like don't interrupt my break up anthem
SHUT UP JD
I love how happy he looks when she says that
Best comment goes tooooo......
I'm told that in the context of the show, he's waving a gun around and is pointing it at her during that line. Which is like the perfect proof of her point in a nutshell.
Yes so true
I love how this completely goes against the whole "heroine has to fix him because he's damaged and Sad." She recognizes it's not her responsibility to make him feel better, he needs professionals and she needs to do what she needs to make sure she stays healthy and happy.
This is something that always bothered me about the og musical. To me it went against exactly what the movie about how the bad boy actually can't be changed and that nothing will ever change unless you reject it entirely. This song made me respect the show so much more
amelia watters How? Veronica made it clear she wanted nothing to do with him in the og musical too. Sure, there wasn’t a song about it, but she said she didn’t want to be with him anymore and said that they were breaking up. Again, there wasn’t a song dedicated to it, but I thought it was enough.
@@Kamechan98 a song laminates it as in the og musical it states that she did still believe in him at the end but needed to move on and did. this shows that she's 'saying no' to the toxicity of jd's mental state. veronica as shown in beautiful believes in people and that they can become nice and smart with help from others like her, the main focus of seventeen is just that, here seventeen is flipped over and she is singing that she can't help cause she's not qualified. she still has thast faith but it isn't in herself but in other's hands.
the dead girl walking reprise has the same vibe as this song, just not as explicit in it's message tbh. i do like how this song is more straight up about veronica standing up for herself and telling jd to eat shit
@@gerrykeay1100 we can all agree with that
The best part is when Jamie says 'but I love you' and she replied 'dude' when the beat dropped you could see Jaime smiling and looking really happy and genuinely exited by how good Carrie actually is.
Shadow Storm I just saw that!! I love his excitement!!
Sorry this is a bit late but in the musical she say dude because he pointed a gun at her
Still I love jd but I have to remind my self he’s physco
JD is such a nutcase but Jamie is such an adorable lil dork and my heart just can’t handle it😭😭😭
I love how they took the tune of Our Love is God and completely turned it on it's head, basically throwing JD's bullshit back in his face
I've listened to this song so much and only now did I realise that!
Ohhh, you're right! It hit me at "Don't say a word." Damn.
I can’t hear it and it’s driving me crazy trying to hear it.
IKR
SaiUrchin for me it’s easiest to hear in the very beginning. Sing “they made you cry” when Carrie starts “you are a drug”, the melody of the verse starts the same, but then gets more different as it goes
-"Veronica, who else is gonna..."
-"NoNoNoNo"
Yes please!
I love how it's edited and it's still wrong

M Perez Can you explain more? Of your point of view?
M Perez I know, I just got confused. Thanks for clarifying it anyways
Squishy Heart
Right!? This part of the song always gives me goosebumps because my father is pretty abusive to me and my mom would always try to justify it by telling me how his father abused him so it's all he knows and hearing that stanza helped me see that I'm not doomed to repeat history and that it's okay to be upset at my father for the things he's done. What he did was completely his choice and there is no justifying it.
I only just got the whole just say no line! She compares JD to a drug, and this is the 80s, with Nancy Reagan's whole "just say no!" to drugs campaign! That's kinda subtle, i like it
Woooow mindblown🤯
There was Say No campaign in the UK in the 80's prior to Nancy Reagan's, she added JUST to it and nicked it as her idea! plus it isn't subtle that is why the song was written with that title lol .. It was introduced for the West End version
Sadly getting rid of addiction is a bit harder than just saying no.
Bro I didn't notice that but that's so cool and subtle
@@tijay8507 I'm pretty sure there's a lot of people out there who won't notice this though - subtle or not.
Calling him "friend" is like the biggest insult she could have thrown at him and i love it
I just realized that lmaoo
"Far from cool guys like you"
Yasss I love this. Similar to movie Veronica's line "You know what I want, babe? Cool guys like you out of my life"
Bridget Packard Yes! I love how they were able to portray the emotions that motivated the breakup in the original movie within the song. The “cool guys” line, the mention of his fucked up dad since the original scene takes place right after another weird conversation with him at his house, and the way their dialogue presents the same urgency with which Winona Ryder’s Veronica was trying to get away from Christian Slater’s JD! It’s so perfect.
Not to mention, I think there's other mentions to lines in the movie.
Song: "I'm not Bonnie, you're not Clyde"
Movie: "My Bonnie and Clyde days are over"
It can be written off as referencing the same material, but I think it's a nice connection.
I totally never thought of it that way but now I see it and I’m living for this song even more than I was!!!!!!
People keep saying that they feel conflicted about this song being apart of the musical since it doesn’t fit with the sound or feel of the soundtrack, but I think because of that it makes it a great addition. This is the part where she finally gets the courage to break things off with JD. It’s a big development so this change makes sense. It shows that yeah things will be and are different.
Yeah also it’s a complete fucking bop
@@Blue-xt7kc I think seventeen was about staying together, and putting all the bs behind them and not killing anymore, but I say no is about Veronica completely leaving JD, and that they can't be together because JD is only using her as a justification for the shit he does. So it can seem like a similar arc, but it's not the same
@@Blue-xt7kc In my opinion, Seventeen was like offering one last chance at a relationship while I Say No was saying you had your last chance and you blew it.
This is such a powerful song, I'm so happy they added it to the show. It really shows how powerful and determined Veronica is once she realizes what she has done wrong, and the toxic relationship she's in. Carrie's voice portrays it perfectly! A feminist anthem
It also shows people how bad giving into someone can be. I have been in toxic relationships before and it takes courage to do it. But her bravery, her determination shows anyone they can do it.
Me exact thought upon seeing it! So empowering
I'm not familiar with this version of the show. Where does this fit into the storyline/is the ending of this one different?
Britni4795 it will probably fit perfectly into to scene when they break up (or moreover Veronica breaks up with him). In the Movie its the scene where JD shoots the TV and because I have never seen the Musical IRL this is the only moment where I can think of it was the perfect moment to fit. Because in the movie Veronica makes it clear that she is fed up with his behaviour. Love it that they added this to the musical tho, because it’s just such a key moment that really deserves a song (it’s this moment when everyone goes downhill).
for me that was the beginning of dead girl walking reprise
"But your still using me to justify the harm you do" My favorite line it just says how veronica finally realizes that JD is using her to make himself feel better
“I’m not Bonnie/you’re not Clyde” is probably one of my favorite lyrics and idk why
Edit: also “you need help I can’t provide” is another great lyric
Jennis Angel that a reference form the movie. Veronica says something like that.
@@maymays3218 you get a chance can you call me please

@@musicbyella3769 Oh, so that's where the song fits in. Thanks.
"You need help I can't provide "
The way that line is sung is honestly spine tinglingly good.
I love the way she says "dude" and his reaction afterwards is like "YASSSS SLAY."
Half these comments have missed the fact that THE LITERAL SHOW/MUSIC WRITERS MADE THESE CHANGES AND ADDITIONS. This isn’t fan fiction or a censorship or someone interfering, this is the original creators improving on their vision for the show and I’m disappointed that lots of people are angry without at least knowing the facts. I saw this song performed live when I saw Heathers in London, I was there on the very first night it went into the show and it was phenomenal, and I’m certainly not losing sleep over losing the song “Blue” as I frankly couldn’t listen to it without feeling a little queasy, whereas I ADORED “You’re Welcome”. Give things a chance and do your research before you blindly complain about them, please
TheSophieDoubleYou Still doesn't fit the vibe of the show or adds much. I guess this is what happens when you return to a project after some time. You lose some of its touch. That is why people are mad.
SoHardToBeMe if that’s still your opinion after knowing everything then I respect that, I just don’t have the same opinion as you! Everyone’s allowed to feel their own way about it! My real issue was with the people who don’t know that it was done by the creators and seem to think someone put the song in behind their backs just for the sake of adding a song
+
Yeah I agree. I didnt do research or anything on the matter, I just notice details like the same writer on both 2014 and 2019 versions on itunes, so I knew the same writer did it. lol. And I'm not too upset they left out blue either. The ballsiness of the writing made it funny, but the meaning to the song made me feel uneasy listening to it, like "I like it but I dont know if I should" feeling, because it was catchy and dark humoured and the performace was fun, but the topic made it uncomfortable. And I do like You're welcome a lot. But idk, it feels likes its compensating for todays generations and feelings and too strong of a lesson to be taught in it, where the rest of the songs are bold and not afraid to touch on subjects in crude dark humoured way. Like they didnt want to offend anyone with the new song(being it was written today and not 2010's). Your welcome and Say no, both are super great, but like others I also agree that they just dont quite fit. They fit enough. and they certainly dont take anything away from the musical, they flow well enough, but they just sound like the added songs rather than added songs that fit so well they seem like they were always there. If that makes sense. lol. They have an essence of 2019 writing, that's all. idk.
@@ChristineSimsOfficial They took 'blue' out quite a while ago because of the kind of backlash it got for it's 'ballsiness'. Honestly everything they've added in to the show is absolutely to die for, the extra lines, or the new songs, or the spoken lines mixed in with the old numbers that give better context to things, it's a much better fit and honestly a much better show now
So do musicals sometimes just add songs?? That’s so wild I love musicals but I didn’t know people could just occasionally change them. That’s awesome.
Heathers also took out "blue" and replaced it with another song for its UK run. If it's the people who wrote the musical that change it then it's fine
It's quite common! Most shows will go through a lot of changes in their early stages, especially if you see them in workshops and things tend to get refined in to their final form before they go on to the West End with any last minute changes happening in previews. If an audience isn't responding then things may change throughout a run but ideally that doesn't happen.
Heathers opened in the UK at an off-west end theatre (after workshops) where they'd swapped out "Blue" for a song called "You're Welcome" and added another new song called "I Will Never Shut Up Again" and then added "I Say No" just before their transfer to the West End, giving the creatives and the actors a chance to test it out a bit. Part of the reason for adding songs before transfers is sometimes because of time. Most West End shows are around a certain time.
A good example of this is Hamilton actually, where the before its transfer from Off-Broadway to Broadway it actually cut out a lot of material because the original Off-Broadway show was longer than Les Mis (that's long for a show) !! So it can go both ways! :)
Yeah another prime example of adding songs is when newsies went on tour they added a song for crutchie (probably because the accidentally left the actor at a gas station one time) when he goes to the refuge and they kept while the original broadway cast came back to do the recorded version of newsies
Guys😆 this is the London show it was on the west end I saw it 2😄! there’s 3 new songs x
The creators of the musical did all the changes in the UK version

As someone who’s been in a toxic relationship, I was so glad this song was added. I feel like the original off Broadway soundtrack glossed over jd and glorified him in a way that worried me due to the musical having so many young fans. All these comments that are like “this doesn’t fit the theme of the show” are like... dude. This needed to be said.
I hope you’re out of that now and happy and healthy
Totally agree, this is needed to show the hard side of it. Its really easy to see how young girls romanticize JD and dont see this side of that relationship, and how in real life your abuser doesnt just blow up and disappear.
@marissaa.2166 I do get what you're saying about the song but for me personally, as someone who's also been in a toxic relationship, I find 17 a lot more relatable and important in showing the nature of toxic relationships and why people stay in them. The 'I could be good with you' mentality is (in my experience), a key factor that should be mentioned and pointed out.
I agree that this is an important message that should be said, but it should also be acknowledged that there isn't always a point in toxic relationships where you're either strong enough to or can 'say no', because you're still hopeful it will get better, even if you are wrong.
Complete agreement w you 🤝
There are so many beautiful, high quality clips of the show. Can we have a dvd perhaps? I'd pay 50$. Think of the money you could make. Please tell me someone has this.
I think Carrie said all the clips were for promotional use only. They didn't ever record the full show
I would to ArtLikeANerd
Normally shows will film their production. I’m sure she might have just meant that these clips were just meant for promotional use as of right now, as they don’t have plans to release a recording at the moment.
They did the same thing with Hamilton. They released many promotional clips of scenes, some almost being the whole scene, and there is still a full recording which Lin has said will be released at a later date.
lolopop91 Msp Same with the London production of Hamilton, the matinee of cast change (December 1st) they recorded the show
I think it is so important how she recognizes and acknowledges how he needs help that she can't give him. Implied that he would actually need professional help. Which is completely true. Of course it is good to be there for loved one's but sometimes you just have to recognize that there is the need for professional help and that it can be very damaging for everyone involved if that need is not addressed openly.

@@jessicaandrade3137 That is so awesome. :-)
Yeah he came to opening night
Yes, it is Hamilton learning to say no to it
I love this song, in my opinion I thinks it’s a great and much needed addition to expand Veronica’s character.
In the film she’s presented as having so much more restraint and anger towards JD than in the musical (prior to this), this song basically shows that side of her.
And I love that this song makes even more references to dialogue in the film, for example: in the film she says to JD “my Bonnie and Clyde days are over” which is shown in here as “I’m not Bonnie, you’re not Clyde!”.
Carrie was perfect for this, her voice is beautiful and powerful.
"I'm not Bonnie, you're not Clyde"
omgomgomgomg I love this!
It's from the original movie
Imagine how much easier life for Alexander Hamilton would have been if he sang this song instead?

She played Fantine in the Les miserables concert on West End at the beginning of December and her rendition of I dreamed a Dream was so beautiful and peaceful. It's really pleasing to see how talented she is that she can do both songs so well despite how different they are!
She has such a powerful and strong voice I'm surprised the first I have heard of her is from Heather's because she truly is an amazing singer
She played Epoinine for a long time prior to playing Fantine
We just need Barrett and Carrie to collaborate on this song~
I love how this is also a celebration of Heathers West End! I miss it so much. This song was such a brilliant addition to the show.
Everyone wants Barrett to sing it cuz she will sound amazing and I do agree Barrett has an amazing voice but we also need to appreciate Carries voice

Love how you think you can slip Lin by me.
I can spot my husband from a mile away.
I absolutely LOVE the fact that Veronica before “I Say No” believes in What JD says, but in the song she realizes that JD is manipulative, so she stops him before he can get to her: “dont say a Word, you speak and i’ll Cave in”.. but in the end of the song Veronica is so sure of herself that she lets him speak “But I love you!” and is just “...Dude, THIS IS IT”

I love barret wilbert weed but she tends to belt her notes, especially when it comes to her head voice - I don’t think she could convey the emotion in this song as well as Carrie does, although I still think she’s fab in her own way!
Martha McKinney-Perry idk I feel like the belt adds more emotion

I love this. In the broadway version, they never actually show Veronica breaking up with JD. There is just a sudden flip to JD going insane because Veronica left him accept they don’t show it.

I got the opportunity to see this live and jesus christ it is *PHENOMENAL* she's an amazing actor, I do t get why some people in the fandom don't like her.
Fey Trickster I have no problem with her, but for me I like Barrett a lot more, if I saw her live I think I’d like her more 🤷♀️
i like how there’s two things in this song compared to the movie
“i’m not bonnie, you’re not clyde!”
i like to think this comes from “my bonnie and clyde days are over!”
and “start again somewhere new, far from cool guys like you!”
comes from the line “you know what i want, babe? cool guys like you out of my life.”
Adding this song to the show was so smart of them. This might be my favorite song out of the whole play- it perfectly captures Veronica and JD's relationship. And of course Carrie's vocals are AMAZING.
She adds something special to her song that makes her stand out
I love this song for so many reasons. I feel like anyone who’s been in a toxic relationship and has had to be the one to break it off can relate. The rush of clarity mixed with a part of them loved the person, but knows staying with them means far more harm for themselves then any good for the relationship.
i love how this song portrays the development perfectly. one of my favorite anthems ever. veronica learning from her past and growing from it. also not feeling responsible to “fix” jd, so powerful. gawd, i love how this song empowers growth.
I don't think we could have asked for a better Veronica after Barrett Wilbert Weed. Carrie is amazing.
The last time I was this early was when carrie was Eponine 😂
I'm so late that carrie is Fantine
shojorebecca I’m so late that Carrie is Cinderella (well, after COVID is over)
god, the musical heathers is a fucking treat for peeps who have no attention span and have difficulty watching movies (BECAUSE THESE SONGS ARE FUCKING SICK...oh and music is a great coping mechanism for low attention control, so you get an entire story while listening to it and doing your work, without having to focus as hard as say an audio book)
I littraly cried when I first heared that song, because of how much it reflected my life. Don't stay with people that aren't good for you, no matter how often they say "I love you". Maybe you think you could change them, but if they didn't do til now they won't.
Please watch out for you. Probably no one else is
I really like how they took the tune of "Our Love is God" which is arguably the moment Veronica is most subsumed by JD, and reworked it into this song in which she reclaims her agency. That's really cool subtext!
And so musics use in Heathers imroves. Could this revised version surpass Dear Evan Hansen?
jamie's smile, no matter how many times i watch is so contagious😭he's so happy it makes me happy
am i the only one who is still listening the heathers album as much as possible? Carrie is not human, so god damn good 💙
That grin on the guy who plays JD's face when Veronica said "Dude." was so pure
The fact that she’s hitting these insane notes and her face looks like it’s no effort at all. A Queen.
Jamie's smiley face after she said "dude" is the best reaction ever HAHAHAHA
"You will not be _satisfied_ "
I-
Can I just say I found it cute that Jamie was taking a video at the side with a huge grin.
But the fact they added more songs actually is a great decision. It gives more dimension to the characters and more seen character development. So I'm happy with the new songs. Wish I could download them all though *sigh*
Carrie’s voice😍😍😍
I say no, I say knock it off with your notes and your rules and your games. And those sycophants who follow you, I’ll remember all your names. And when they drag you down like they inevitably do, I will not laugh along with them and approve their palace coup.
Cuz that's not me
I don't need their good opinions, I have plenty of opinions. Every Asshole has opinions, but that doesn't make them true!
Sky Sorrow what’s true is being me and is rather be me I’d rather be me then be with you so raise them high cuz being nice and shy is insulting my I.Q!
I LOVE THIS SONG

"What's your damage, Veronica?!"
This song is awesome, this video is notifying me that they are redoing Heaters, I have Faith in this!
I wanna see it so frickin badly
Is this when Carrie had tonsillitis? It's such a good song but this version feels less emotive than the live version. There were words and phrases that she put more stress on and it sounded wonderful. Don't get me wrong, this is still an amazing version, and if she had tonsillitis during recording I can understand why she wouldn't put any excess strain on her voice. Still an absolute queen though.
Yes it was
