I actually got in touch with Neil Ross, the guy who does the voice of all the Whammies, and asked him what his favorite Whammy was. I couldn't decide what mine was, and he told me he was in the same boat as me; we both like them all. Just thought I'd point that out real quick.
Whammies are the epitome of "It's only funny when it happens to someone else!" Plus I think the animations are to help cushion the blow from losing your cash. It's one thing to land on a Bankrupt space or something but it's another thing when that Bankrupt space is a little red gremlin who trash talks you and blows himself up
