These techniques will protect the above-ground components of your irrigation system, but if you are in an area where the ground freezes, you will also need to blow out your system (which Chris will cover in a future video).
In this video, Chris winterizes Rainbird valves and sprinkler components, but he also provides tips and modifications for other irrigation brands, such as Hunter, Irritrol, Toro, and Orbit.

I live in SC and was wondering if I need to do both : the shut off steps (shut off inside valve in my garage AND the outside shut off in the ground box) or can I just do the latter and just shut off the outside underground box lever? And lastly do i need to drain the pipes..do I run the outside spigots or run all 5 of my irrigation sections in the yard or just the first section until empty?
Sounds like you are planning to blow out with a compressor yourself? We recommend using a professional the first time if you are not sure how to do it yourself. To answer your last question it depends on the size of your compressor but this video is to help protect you from freezing before the blowout and before the ground freezes. To answer your first question the first shut-off in the supply line so if that is the garage one if I'm guessing right. The others should be left 1/2 open.
