    I grew up in Welland, my father was Chief Engineer on these types of ships, I remember going through the locks with him when I was a child. It was a really cool experience.

    This was one of my first jobs. I grew up about 300 yards from Lock 8. Thank you Rick. You're the best BTW.

    You all have NO idea how much I envy Rick, as someone who has lived a few blocks from the Welland Canal my entire life and would do almost anything, to travel through it on a laker!

    7 years later after this video is posted my dad's out there working on that ship right now!! We're from lethbridge Alberta and he's definitely enjoying his time! Aside from covid issues lol

    It was an engineering marvel of the 17th century! The first canal opened in 1829.

    In this video, Rick is actually exiting into Lake Ontario coming north from Lake Erie. Lock 1 is in St. Catharines, lock 8 is in Port Colborne. Good fun video for anybody not familiar with the process.

      @@bilgeratjim Lakers are traditionally called" boats", not ships, even the 1000 foot ones on the upper lakes. The ocean going freighters are called "salties". Whitefish Bay is a bulk lake boat operated by Canada Steamship Lines with their headquarters in Montreal, for cargoes of stone, coal, grain, iron ore and the like, certainly not a tanker either.
