    There is a semi-comforting thought: The most likely zone of impact is ocean, and a city-killer mass isn't powerful enough to cause a major tsunami far from its impact. Also, the second most likely zone of impact is wilderness, countryside, and farmland. Even with no warning (but some warning in the case of moderate tsunami threat), expected fatalities would be relatively low.

Second, have you heard of Oumuamua? Objects can and do come in from outside the solar system, and while the chance they'd hit us is small, it's not 0.

    A single starship can carry 150 metric tons to orbit then refuel to go anywhere
    Thus assuming even if you used Heavy Duty Aluminum Foil (it will be something lighter like Mylar this is worst case scenario)
    HD Aluminum foil = 0.27 kg per Meter^2
    So 150,000kg payload / .27kg per Meter^2 = 555.56km^2 Aluminum foil to orbit
    Thats enough to wrap an entire 13km Asteroid with some foil left to spare.

    This is why it is wise to have colonies on the Moon and Mars. A couple small repositories of human technology and even a potential future off-planet Seed Ark (and DNA ark as well) similar to the one in Norway as a backup in case of a future catastrophe. Humanity is constantly on the brink of destruction from multiple potential threats and more than a few are of our own making. This video failed to even mention the threat from Comets. These can be quite large and quite capable of doing catastrophic damage to a planet. Look what Shoemaker/Levy 9 did to Jupiter and it had already broken up into several pieces. One impact site left a surface scar in Jupiter's atmosphere the size of the Earth! That was visible for days afterwards. An impact like that on Earth would not just wipe out the Earth but it would start it over much in the way Theia did when it smacked into the early Earth and created the moon. Even worse we don't normally see comets until they are close to Jupiter.

    • @Darth_Lunas

      he also never mentioned that a nuke CAN very much be used to move around something like a comet or a really big asteroid. You ablate so much material from the surface that it acts like a thruster for a very short time, giving the object a kick in its orbit that can alter it significantly after a while.

    • @LadyBeyondTheWall
      @LadyBeyondTheWall 2 года назад

      I think once we have the capability to mine iron from small moons and launch it places in such an amount that it could use gravity to move an asteroid away, our technology will probably be good enough anyway to take care of most asteroids without going through all the trouble of mining iron from moons. Such as some of the ideas he mentioned but said we don't have the technology for it.

    this is a solid video, but be careful about this channel, that channel has a lot of very questionable "scientific" content that sort of shows a shocking level of scientific ignorance by the site's creator. I don't doubt he has degrees in physics, but he must have been a C student, because his grasp of science and scientific theory is very very poor. And before anyone defends that channel -> the perpetual acceleration fan-cart series of videos might be some of the worst scientific content on youtube; with explanations and scientific laws thrown out the window with asinine ripleys believe it or not sensationalism.
