I played in a band where the lead guitarist used a 5150. After every show, every guitar player in the audience would always come up and want to know more about the amp. It was our sound, and we sounded great.
I’m still a year into owning this and honestly, I’m still in the honeymoon period. I’ve tried the other amp on offer, but I keep coming back to this one. Y’all nailed it out of the park and then some!
I once heard Ed say something to the effect that he viewed the VH records as his “solo albums” as it were. I can definitely see that. I personally always wanted to see Ed do an instrumental album with just him, but after hearing him say that, I understood better.
Eddie was great and a giant inspiration but he wasn’t wired to do a G3. Evh wasn’t diverse enough to go side by side with the shred heads. He had one sound and a limited bag of tricks that he repeated over and over in all his albums.
@@tradbowseven eddie had a lot of different guitar sounds. His guitar sounds different on all albums. Its true that after 1984ish he started repeating his licks. But lets face it. I'm not a guitarist, but I love music all types. Since the 1st time I listened to your song the forgotten part 2 I've been amazed by the soul the passion and the feeling that comes through without words. If you have ever lost someone that you loved more than life it's self, and you listen you will understand what I'm saying. The greatest rock instrumental song ever.
I remember playing the 1st generation 5150. I was a kid. My buddy and I went to the music store as soon as it landed and plugged in. We were both dropped jaw. Just like Satch..
King Edward has solidified his genius in the best of guitarist. I remember Edward was listening to satch boogie during a interview and he stated that joe had a lil VH in him.
That's because the only way to make a 5150 sound good was to play it wide open. I had the original 5150 2x12 combo, thinking you could make the smaller version work in a bar-band setting. You couldn't. The hiss was unbearable and the amp wouldn't sing until it was at a paint-peeling decibel level. I'm sure if you're playing an arena it sounds great. It just wasn't practical for weekend warrior types. 🤷♂️
the 5150 does have the richest tone it's been my favorite amp since it came out . I got my first one back in 97 switched from a jcm 800 .i wish I still had those original amps . I've got a 6505 that I love and a reissue 800 that rocks but that old Marshall and peavey had an almost magical sound . maybe it's just the way I remember it but anyways the 5150 has really taken tone to the next level . and don't get me started on the 7 string ibanez those two pieces of gear have made guitar so interesting hats off to eddie and Steve via for pushing limits and taking rock guitar to new heights.
It's a Saldano to a point. Then it becomes 5150. I understand now. Going on the cabs, I feel the slant cab(with lynchbacks and creambacks on the bottom gets you a sound that seems to break up a little bit easier on the ears.
So wierd i had a dream of Joe last night playing at a random venue and everyone had to leave early including him to get the last train home...But he was playing a white custom special ibanez almost like Steve's guitar but with the handle in the body. Its was wierd he played fours songs and left.
Because he is now Marshall player again with his signature JVM model. I don’t think he could reference his name attached to the discontinued Peavey product.
it took me about a month to find my sound on a 5150. the eq is so sensitive and every setting is so dynamic you change one thing and other things change. super interesting sound. the power amp is where most of the tone comes from it has a very dark and aggressive punchy sound that's warm and fat. just a little less aggressive than i would like but overall a great amp. i use the low input and gain on something like 3 and i get the richest edge of breakup classic rock tone ever. this am can do classic rock medium gain but you have to throttle it back a lot. once you start pulling back the gain on this amp it really starts to shine. try it sometime. pull back that resonance too. let this amp breathe and see what it can do. its not just a metal amp.
Having a 5150 and a jsx the jsx is just a bit more... Magical. The jsx sings. The 5150 sounds like the hot rodded Marshal of most people's dreams. But the sustain on the JSX is just better.
There's interviews and sources that say that EVH left Peavey and started his own brand because he didn't want the in house competition of the brand new Peavey JSX. It's funny that Joe loves the 5150, but also caused its relocation(to an extent. Ed needed his own company in my opinion)
You can get a Block Letter 5150 for dirt cheap and they're killer amps. I don't understand how that is. I have both a Marshall JCM 800 2203 and a mint Peavey Block Letter 5150, and I have more fun playing the 5150. Hell with those 4k plus boutique amps. A 5150 or JCM 800 with a good OD and nothing beats them.
