My dog is reactive to squirrels and bunnies. Is it the same process?

This video is so helpful. I’ve been doing this with my 3yo lab over the past week. She is doing much better with walking by dogs who are not reactive/barking at her. But if she walks by a dog that starts lunging and barking at her she has a difficult time staying non-reactive. Does this usually decrease as we continue to correct and de-sensitize?

Man, I wish someone would train me just as good as a human

Im curious about reactivity to specific dogs in the neighborhood while on walks? Training is good everywhere else, and in the neighborhood if we dont see them, but if we see the particular dog, our dog becomes very reactive? Could this be a territorial thing? It's also difficult to practice training around the specific dogs when you don't know the people or see them often.

That's actually something I work with a lot with the dogs I train. Often they'll be fine if a dog passes calmly but when a dog reacts towards them they'll react back. It's important that no matter where you are, or what dog is passing, you are communicating with your dog so that they know what is correct and incorrect behavior. Use the clear communication methods I showed in this video and apply them every time you are waking your dog.

do you do mostly verbal praise or any treats?

I noticed you aren't rewarding bbq with treats at all when passing and just used verbal praise. Is that a preference?

During one of the passes I offered her a treat but she didn't take it. Unfortunately this happened off camera and wasn't included in the video. Some dogs are more food motivated than others and BBQ is more motivated by praise and play.

I train my dog and she is not food or treat motivated but she is toy/play motivated. Each dog is different, I have a lil dog and she LOVES food.

She will associate her unconfortable feeling with the other dog. With the time this might make things even worse....

What is youre solution? to make counter conditioning and run away from other dogs until the dog will become 12 yr? Look at the best trainer - larry krohn, ivan balbanov and cheack yourr resources.

Wow, what an awful way to associate punishment with "arousal" in a dog. Your correction and speech is far too confusing and mis-timed by you for the dog to associate anything other than dog and correction. Its sad because if trained in a proper way BBQ could react to your fast no's and yes's. You can see BBQ start to avoid the dog all together knowing any interest would result in a mild correction. This is going backwards not forwards in associations and connection for the dog.

Letting your dog react to other dogs while walking on a leash is asking for trouble. I think it's right to not allow it and demand that your dog should walk by your side unless you specifically give a sign that it's okay to investigate their surroundings / interact with other dogs, people / etc.
When my dog is off-leash at the beach or a park I let him run freely and him going to greet other dogs and people is okay, but when he's on the leash I want him to be following my lead.
