Taira no Kagekiyo (Kagekiyo of Taira) is basically a pseudo-alter version for Ushiwakamaru/Yoshitsune as a character, according to the translated voicelines here, she felt betrayed/abandoned by her brother and the genji clan at one point when she was alive. That betrayal incarnated itself as an embodiment of hate for all Genjis: "Taira no Kagekiyo" which as you can see is suffering an identity crisis due to that incarnation possessing Yoshitsune's body. The body that Kagekiyo possesses is a body of Ushiwakamaru which at some point has served as one of your servants leading to her habit of referring to you as "Lord" (in Japanese) instead of "Master" (in English/Katakana). Due to her being a really loyal person, once the mask is removed, she's basically Ushi in a traumatic/PTSD-ish state due to her feelings of fear, anger, uncertainty/doubtfulness, resentment, etc conflicting with her memories of loyalty and nostalgia. Once you've removed her mask, hug her tightly comfort her, FGO's best tanuki needs your care right now, give it to her (Though her negative feelings aren't going to disappear anytime soon due to being summoned as an "Avenger" class servant, she can still at least relieve herself from being lonely)

I am kinda surprised she still holds animosity towards Raikou though. Yeah, shes still genji but, she didnt exactly enjoy the position, especially after her father basically ordered her to become a demigod incubator and kill Kintoki.
Re: Third Ascension's 38 degrees of honesty, I think I saw something about there being 38(?) Spirits that have enough of a vendetta against the Genji to be summoned as Kagekiyo. So, Idunno, maybe that's the shared wish of all possible Kagekiyos? My favorite line is the one for Benkei.
It is quite sad to see how ushiwakamaru ended up divided into two parts by his own death and legend. an enlightened version without darkness that only wishes to serve you and help without any resentment or hatred towards others. and the other part formed from the legend that she was Taira no Kagekiyo and the hatred that formed in her being after being betrayed thus creating a union between his legend, hatred and compatibility with Taira no Kagekiyo, therefore Taira is not really Taira no Kagekiyo but is like a kind of imposter like benkei but is also Taira. Indeed that is, quite a sad and depressing fate

At first, because the banner says Kagekiyo, many of us were worried that she would be Kagekiyo entirely, or at the very least, completely given up on her existence like Saleiri is about being the Grey Man or Edmond is bout being the Count, giving up on their humanity. With maskless Bond 5, we finally get adult Ushiwakamaru, Yoshitsune, back to us completely like a long lost friend. For an avenger to say "I am...Ushiwaka" is pretty much a miracle.
It is mentioned before that if a servant is greatly influenced enough then those memories will be carried over to future versions of themselves summoned even if they don't remember some of the events that lead to that development. It is why some servants are trying to push the F/GO master to develop certain servants so they can move on from their personal issues in future summons once they return to the throne. One example is Merlin pushing him to develop Mordred so she can mature mentally and carry that development to her future summons.
@@orrthehunter yeah Mordred has really growth thanks to that interaction with Ritsuka, like her hatred for Artoria, and she declaring loyalty to one king. Hell she even acts more "girly" sometimes

In the Kagekiyo form she's like a true avenger, completed blind by vengeance, not much different than a Berserker blind by madness tbh (0:33 that line though haha) The Yoshitsune form we can see the bits of Ushi resurging step by step. I especially liked the progress within the bond lines, but it also makes me sad seeing our poor Ushi suffering a identity crises like this T_T (the lack of any headpat lines is unforgivable). If I had to take a shot every time she said the words 'kill' and 'Genji', this translation would never have come out. So, i agree, she's truly Avenger. Yeah 4th and 5th Bond LVL lines just killed me inside when I translated them, too. At least I was glad to learn that she has 2 sets of dialogue and that our Ushiwaka is still in her body.

However, I saw a bit in the jp side, fans saying the event did a good job expanding the situation that lead to this and also, apparently, it gave Kagekiyo a new light? Perhaps she is one of those cases in which the event kinda covers her story better. Other thing that I know of the event is that Ushi and Hougen interactions/ disciple and master dynamic is one of the big highlights and was a gigantic sucess (plushies incoming!).

Kagekiyo is the name of clan that feuds with Minamoto (Genji). Ushiwaka is Ushiwaka. But you're right in your judgement. The young Ushiwaka in Rider form has a deep respect for her brother and has not yet been betrayed by him. Due to psychological trauma, Ushiwaka (Yoshitsune) uses Kagekiyo's personality to justify her hatred of Genji's clan. At 3rd ascension, her mask breaks and she begins to remember who she really is.
