I don't really have a solid basis for my guess here, but I think the nameless girl was indeed being abused by her mother. All I have to go off of is how the mother responds to Yuichi's point blank accusation/ questioning of abusing her daughter, trying to steamroll past the topic by ignoring it and chattering away. I know "normal people would have done XYZ instead" is flawed logic, but I feel the mother's response is a) odd, and b) a deliberate decision by the mangaka (an in I think the oddness of the mother's response is something the author wants to express to the reader
Where in god's name does punpun and his family find all these crazy people and it seems like they let it rub off on them. But my god this author is a genius at showing emotion through eyes.
Because they are all around us too, our friends, family, including ourselves, we just haven't realized or come to terms with how insane everything and everyone is.
Its unfortunately harder than it seems to love yourself if you see nothing but the negatives, but practice and consistency will get you there, little by little

Glad to hear you've liked the series so far, as well as the overall presentation. Still plenty to come, hope you'll enjoy the others in the near future!
excellent analysis! Im not all the way through yet, but I wanted to comment on something. One of my favorite things about punpun is how morally gray all the characters are. So despite yuichi being a protagonist, I don't think he's completely in the right and the Young girl is in the wrong. Yuichi was selfish and gave into his desires of cheating on his girlfriend with a child, I feel that shouldn't go unnoticed. I suppose the legal age is 16 in some parts of Japan but not all parts, in any case he's well into adulthood while she is still in adolescence. If it was an older woman, I would buy the "faking abuse" and manipulation, but I truly believe the Young girl was a broken soul reaching out out of desperation. Yuichi was a grown man and he should know better, and he KNOWS he should have known better, and I think that nuance is fascinating.
I'm glad that there's at least someone talking about this. That whole part didn't sit right with me and the (male) readers' reactions to it just confirmed the problem. During the whole arc, the girl is portrayed as a villain, while the author does everything to try to make you sympathize with the uncle. It was so disgusting how op (like many others in discussions I've read about it) continuously tried to justify it by bringing up that it's legal in japan or how it's normal for Yuichi to be swayed by beauty. No well adjusted adult should EVER think it's okay for a grown man to want to sleep with a 16 year old HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT. It reminds me of how in the movie adaptations of Lolita, the whole narrative, instead of showing the depravity of Humbert, portrays him as the victim, and Dolores as the evil manipulator, defeating the whole point of the book. I've been looking for interpretations of and discourse about this part of the manga in particular and it's so terrifying that the (mostly male) audience doesn't see any problem with it. (You can also notice the stark difference between the way this and Midori and Punpun's relationship is handled and interpreted but that's another discussion)
@@wldnbsvxajyb6401 I think the author does try to make you sympathise with Yuuichi but I'd say he makes it very clear he was fucked up through Yuuichi's own dialogue and self hatred! But yeah overall I've seen some fucked perspectives on this manga so far, namely on Midori raping Punpun and Yuuichi's affair.
@@mckinleyknight1775 You're right, Yuuichi is shown to feel remorse afterwards, but I think the concept of statutory rape should never even be approached from the "the child an evil manipulator and the adult is the real victim" standpoint in the first place. it's really harmful to actual victims. (Also I looked it up and in Tokyo, where it happened the age of consent is 18, so there's really no excuse)
@@wldnbsvxajyb6401 I also find it weird that people misconstrue the wrongness of yuichis actions. The whole point is that he knows what he did is fucked up, and can’t let go of that guilt. I think many readers interpret that as “he’s being too hard on himself”, which takes away the nuance of yuichis character and his sexual abuse he did inflict on a child.
@@wldnbsvxajyb6401you are projecting your view of “men” as a institution on the reader . I don’t know anyone who viewed Yuichi as a hero, and soon after Punpun was taken advantage of as well.
Idk it depends on what Mindori told yuuichi like most of everyone else I don’t find it hard to believe midori could make it sound a certain way allowing yuuichi to avoid imploding and rationalize it
Hearing it again, Yuichi's backstory with the girl feels quite similar to the real life case of Gypsy Rose. Gypsy's plotted murder happened years after the manga, but basically it strikes me as "oh, it really is realistic". Similar case: a confined young girl, confined by her abused mother, seduces/manipulates a man into murdering her mother to free herself.
Was watching a few of your Pun Pun videos after finishing it just trying to digest everything didn't realize that it was a relatively small channel with how high quality the videos were keep up the good work!
With whether or not Yuichi would have went along with that daughter's plan of killing her mother, I would like to think he wouldn't. Or at least, try to find out the truth rather than blindly doing it like Washio in the middle of the pottery class. Like I see him asking the mother if she really does tie her daughter up and then going for the kill when the mother avoids the question too many times (which is very suspicious and points to the conclusion that she does do it). Though we wouldn't know what would have happened.
First of all I want to thank you for introducing me to this series with your videos. I saw he first half of your general series breakdown and decided that I need to read the whole thing before I go any further, and I'm glad I did! Second, I want to talk about the scene between Midor and Punpun, because that easily had the biggest impact on me during my entire readthrough. The only way I can describe myself during that scene is borderline catatonic. The suddenness of it froze my blood. It dropped my emotions to a state I haven’t felt in a long time. I felt the broken vulnerability and trauma. I was wrecked. I wanted to go on, but I also felt absolutely sick to my core. I thought, “Surely, something will happen from this! We’ll see Punpun address this trauma and get over it! We’ll see Midori as the rapist she is!” But… That’s not what happened. Midori faces no consequences. And, although he doesn’t realize the cause, Punpun is terribly affected in all of his actions with his sex life and how he treats girls afterwards. The way he seems to desperately seek sex and approval from the girls around him after that. How he disregards the feelings of the other girls. How he almost commits sexual assault multiple times. How he feels a deep emptiness and sadness from/after his interactions with other women. And much more. In my opinion, this stemming from this sexual assault trauma commited to him by Midori. Although I was never sexually assaulted by someone in my life, I do have trauma related to sexuality, and PunPun reminds me all to much of how deep and seemingly unnoticable those scars are. And how those scars will drive you to possibly hurt others as well as yourself… But Midori, Punpun, and Yuuichi don’t realize that this event has incredibly deep consequences leading to his future actions. It still shakes me, and as many others have said, I almost stopped reading. It was almost a feeling close to “secondary trauma” as I read it. I think the Manga is brilliant in this portrayal though, as it feels almost unbearably real in how this sort of F to M sexual assault is actually dealt with in real life, and its consequences… That said, it feels like it could easily go over a lot of readers heads who aren’t reading close enough, or who have little to no knowledge on sexual trauma such as this (how its perpetrated and the affects it can have on someone’s future). Anyways, thanks again for introducing me to this series! I'll be watching your other videos about it now, lol
I'm suprised you didn't touch on what a perv Punpun is, himself. He tried to force himself on a classmate, and his own response to worrying about being reported for it? To cry and mstrbte in the rain. 😐 I'm not too certain where the timeline is falling for these events, but if Midori happened first, then her molestation of Punpun likely contributed.
He was abused and raped. Doesn't make his actions right, but it somewhat explains them. Masturbation for some abuse victims in a way of asserting control over their body, not too dissimiliar to self-harm but just with a different outcome. Punpun suffered alot in the story, but also did some evil shit too.
Great video! Yuichi is probably my favorite character in the series. His demeanor and nihilistic personality are relatable. Your analysis on Yuichi and Midori give me a new perspective and make me reflect on my own relationship as well. Thanks a lot.
Midori is easily the worst one here. What she did was clearly a SA because PunPun was still a minor, and it was clearly an awful situation. But more then that, her using him as emotional support even before assault part was nasty and disgusting. Having such a young kid, used in such a way is awful and disgusting thing.
I can relate with this punpun dude so much for the longest time I thought that I was a waste of space but I’ve m gotten better over time. I wonder if the author hade a similar experience…..

Really love the video! The way you deconstructed the story and unearthed key insights really shows the level of passion and effort you put into these videos! The quality of the videos you put out is outstanding! Just my two cents but Yuichi's self-hatred really reminds me of the main character from Dostoevsky's "Notes from the Underground". The way Yuichi "confesses" to Midori...it reminds me so much of that story!
Midori is the reason I stopped reading this. The fact she never got any consequence or punishment is worse. She ruined two lives and thought it was nothing.
To be honest out of all the characters in the manga Midori is the one who gives me the creeps. Since that chapter everything she does just seems like her putting up a front. It feels oddly unreal and forced. Yuichi too just seems like he's accepting his fate, saying how she can be self centric and selfish.
Reading this manga was a ride. Glad i didn't stop at any point. Took almost 3 days to finish though, full of lessons and trainwrecks of reality. As good and as bad as Fire Punch

Yuuhichi find the oddest wife to be pair with who is somewhat obscess with him yet she is now with yuuhichi are maybe a weird pair who will raise a child for now
Fuck, those people think too abstractly about their lives. It seems to be the reason why Youichi is so depressed, apart from the trust issues coming from his experiences with that other girl.
That was what I was thinking the entire time! I mean, I was chronically depressed and I know that it's easy to have tunnel vision in that state, and focus more on the bad than the good. But 1. I knew there was always good, the bad was mainly within myself, self hate lol and 2. purpose(lack thereof, in this case) never really bothered me. In fact, it freed me! It doesn't matter that I'm (supposedly) terrible, if nothing matters!
Although, if I had actually done terrible acts, like cheating and sa, then maybe I wouldn't think so lightly about it? But, yet again, that doesn't matter because it's impossible at this point. I didn't do anything, especially at such a young age, to warrant such hate from myself. I'm not gonna do anything like that bc tf. If life is meaningless, the self-hate is meaningless! Even though the good things would be meaningless too, they feel good so why not indulge! That's all I need, I've realized.
Yeah it felt like such a betrayal. She and Yuichi were the only safe persons in Punpun's life, and she broke this bond out of nowhere by forcing him to have sex with her, ruining Punpun's life even further.
i believe she did it because yuuichi disappeared for a long time and cheated on her, which can take a huge toll on someone who literally stayed and wanted to change him despite his character and past (something that will repel a lot of people). she herself is already quite a feeble person and acted out of vulnerability because she simply desired a connection to make up for the loss and the only thing that could give her that was forcing it out of another person who wouldn’t fight back, which sadly had to be punpun. i hope nobody thinks i’m excusing it, simply because i’m giving a reason. but it’s just an explanation to build more understanding of the situation and i think that adds more depth to the story
I'd love to see you make an analysis of Welcome to the NHK, i feel like you could make a much more comprehensive video about it and find meaning that others might not

Keep up the great work on the videos I can see you reaching 1000 soon
I feel bad for that 16 year old girl. She had to do what she had to do to survive
Man, never hate yourself. It can quickly get crazy and make you do things that will only make everything worse.
Its unfortunately harder than it seems to love yourself if you see nothing but the negatives, but practice and consistency will get you there, little by little
After finshing this manga i think i'll go off myself now.

Great video as always
Everyone's circumstances make for quite the tangled web of events, that's for sure. Playing devil's advocate with the girl's innocence might be a stretch, but given the lack of information, you truly never know. Glad you enjoyed the video!
Covering difficult material to process is something we all need someone to do.
I saw a few vids on his manga
Most dealt with pun puns relationships lost love and regret
The dramatic events , well demonetization comes to mind for most creators
Ty for not worrying about this
I got to know this story bc of your vid
Don’t ever shy away
When you look into the abyss
It looks back
But you’re only to choices are , face the abyss or run from it
Facing it is the only way to grow
We grow with it but there is no other way to grow.
We must understand the darkness to grow past it
A beautiful story
I wouldn't call what happened between Punpun and Midori as "sex", more so it was more like coercion, aka sexual assault...
I dropped Goodnight Punpun after situation with Midori and especially her saying that what she did was Punpun's graduation gift. It was so awful. i remember throwing my phone at the wall (it didn't break thank god). I came back to this manga only after 5 years.
You need psychological help if your response to a work of fiction about things that never happened is to throw your phone at the wall.

I am really enjoying your Punpun series. The way you narrate over the manga panels is so powerful and I like the way you let the art speak for itself. Really looking forward to the next installment.
Glad to hear you've liked the series so far, as well as the overall presentation. Still plenty to come, hope you'll enjoy the others in the near future!
@@lexaand That's fantastic to hear! Really looking forward to more of your videos. :)
excellent analysis!
Punpun does not deserve this.....yuuichi is terrible to not do anything about his son getting assaulted like that
Idk it depends on what Mindori told yuuichi like most of everyone else I don’t find it hard to believe midori could make it sound a certain way allowing yuuichi to avoid imploding and rationalize it
@@Ace-0f-Spadez wdym I have not read anything this is the only vid I seen from the story. I just feel bad all that happened to punpun

And here I am just finishing up another punpun video & you realease another banger.
I hope you're in a better place ❤
@@shindarene6900 Hi there! Thank you for the kind words.
Maybe it was the fact that he practically was mentally a deranged ass kid due to what he has been exposed to
It’s not justifiable what he’s done but his life was far from fucking decent
He was abused and raped. Doesn't make his actions right, but it somewhat explains them. Masturbation for some abuse victims in a way of asserting control over their body, not too dissimiliar to self-harm but just with a different outcome. Punpun suffered alot in the story, but also did some evil shit too.
Look at the people that punpun grew up with and what happened to him as a child. He never even got a chance to be 'normal'

i was missing the punpun content, this video was amazing.
Great video! Yuichi is probably my favorite character in the series. His demeanor and nihilistic personality are relatable. Your analysis on Yuichi and Midori give me a new perspective and make me reflect on my own relationship as well. Thanks a lot.

Yuuichi is my favorite character for being so low but so aware of his state. I loved this breakdown.
I have to sub.
He’s 100% one of my favourite characters of all time.
Midori is easily the worst one here. What she did was clearly a SA because PunPun was still a minor, and it was clearly an awful situation.
But more then that, her using him as emotional support even before assault part was nasty and disgusting.
Having such a young kid, used in such a way is awful and disgusting thing.

Right before the Dark story elevator music back to the dark story
To be honest out of all the characters in the manga Midori is the one who gives me the creeps. Since that chapter everything she does just seems like her putting up a front. It feels oddly unreal and forced. Yuichi too just seems like he's accepting his fate, saying how she can be self centric and selfish.

Tl;dr: If only the Onodera family knew about "positive nihilism."

But why is he a walking crayon?
Jeez I really liked midori until that stupid point, what the hell was wrong with her 😭😭
Shes perfect
