    To anyone watching this...
    The video doesnt show the consumer unit end.... however looking at the Socket end i am sure it will be all wrong too.
    The terminated socket should look nothing like this onem SWA cable requires special gland to terminate. Hole filled with silicone is not what you want.
    Also if in fact you had an electrician to look at it and connect up make live. He should down his tools and take up baking!!!
    If you ever were to consider harging EV from this set up, you need to sonsider PEN fault protection, it has to be protected by type A RCD device and nit to mention to make sure you are not exceeding incoming supply capacity.

      @@peterigrenyi9176 I replied to another comment that the silicone was a temporary thing ...I fitted a proper cable gland months ago . I will amend the description to say so
      Also it is only for use by my plasma cutter and welder both small DIY types....I would never use it as a charge point for my EV as I have a proper OMHE charger for that....the only time it could ever be used to change my EV is using the cars granny charger which is only 3kw and comes with a standard UK 3 pin plug

      @@peterigrenyi9176 Hi Peter...thanks for that...unfortunately you cant add anything to a vid once uploaded (only music) ..youtube allow you to cut bits out and blur something but not add anything in
      I have put an Edit in the main description but like you say not everyone sees that....what I might do is add a bit to the start of my next vid (even though it will be irrelevant to what it is about ) just showing the gland and the consumer box etc ...if I do I will add it to this thread

      Hi Peter..I have just uploaded a supplementary video showing the SWA gland fitted and included a pic of the consumer unit also mentioned in it that it will never be used as a EV charge point...thanks for pointing out that the silicone was wrong ...I appologise as I shouldnt have shown it even knowing it was going to be temporary as it shows bad practice...I even mention you (1st name only) saying you and others were right to point it out...link is here ruclips.net/video/dNpuA6P0mKA/видео.html

      @TomsManShed well done! I think it is good for people to see how it should look. They get ideas seeing dodgy temporary stuff and places are full of disasters. I spend a lot of time fixing all sorts of dodgy stuff not only DIYers but crappy electricians too.

    Nice video, but you have the wrong 32a plug. The correct one has a locking ring the same as the shutter. The one you have used means it is not waterproof when being used.

    • @TomsManShed

      Hi Les ...thanks for the kind words...much appreciated...I only use the socket to run my Plasma Cutter...I only ever do this outside so only when it is dry.
      I have a proper EV charger (Ohme) for my car ...It's also hardly ever used...funnily though I did use it yesterday (only time this year so far) to do the plasma cutting for the latest vid I just did

  • @edc1569
    @edc1569 Год назад +1

    Plasma cutters cut at about 50V, 30A at 50V is 1500W, which is about 7A at 240VAC, fine on a 3pin plug on a UK ring supply.

    • @TomsManShed
      @TomsManShed  Год назад +2

      The 40 A plasma cutter I bought from Lidl (see my vid on it which includes its data badge) can draw up to 15A...its supplied with a 16 amp commando socket.
      I could have fitted a 16amp commando ...or just run it off a 3 pin plug ...but am now future proofed for any future stuff and prefer going OTT

    Tom, you can't just drill that hole for the cable to fit through buddy, it has to be a 6mm SWA with an armor gland or it doesn't meet regulations can't just drill a hole and fire a bit of silicon in

    If you plan to use the Commando socket to power an EV, current UK regulations as far as I can tell, say you need either a PEN cutout device (upwards of ~£150) or the earth on the socket should be connected to an earth rod and NOT to the house earth.

    • @TomsManShed
      @TomsManShed  Год назад

      Hi Rhian No I wont ever charge my EV from it....I have a dedicated Ohme 7kw charger (with its own earth rod) for that.
      I think I mentioned in the vid that it might be handy for an EV but I meant just on the (3kw) granny charger which can be plugged into a standard domestic socket.
      I haven't actually used it for anything since making this vid as not needed to weld/plasma cut anything.

    Tom as per usual with tradesmen leaving you waiting.
    However I'm also interested in your progress with the new MG ZS EV ? As you may remember I have the same model and year as you in white. Just wondering which one if any you go for, and why. As usual good luck with the channel Brian.

      Hi Brian yes I have a new mk2 zs ev on order.....I ordered it in Jan and was told delivery in March....they offered me £19500 for mine right up to getting the new one.
      However since it had only done 4000 miles I got offered £20772 from Motorway so sold it last month thinking I don't mind being without a car for 4 to 6 weeks as I have my kit car and daughter to run me round if need be.
      HOWEVER I am now told delivery may be as late as JUNE! :( ....luckily weather seems to be getting better as my Scorpion kit car doesn't have a roof. :)
      PS I went for the blue Trophy Connect version...its a much nicer blue than the mk1's

    • @TomsManShed
      @TomsManShed  2 года назад

      Hi Brian...I ordered the long range one.....I never got to use a charge point other than home ....we had planned to use the car more but what with Covid and me losing my wife in September plans of long trips never materialised hence no need for anything other than home charging and the low mileage
      However I thought the LR version would be a better bet long term (will prob keep this a lot longer).
      I see on the FB group that there have been quite a few short range models delivered and think the wait time is much less on them.
      No point moaning about it though...it is what it is will just have to wait.
      Will be doing a side by side comparison vid of MK1 vs MK2 when I get it...already took loads of vids and pics like headlamp brightness etc before I sold the Mk1

    Can I charge my Tesla with this?

    • @TomsManShed
      @TomsManShed  3 месяца назад

      Hi Tigger ...You can get type 2 EV charge leads that will plug into a Commando socket from the likes of evonestop but they are basically just a granny charger like what comes with your car but capable of charging at up to 7kw instead of 3kw
      Ohme also use to do one called the Ohme Go but it's now discontinued ..this gave all the features of the permanently mounted one (like I have) such as a sim card and app control etc.
      I would get a proper EV charge point installed which will give you all the smart features such as being able to select when to charge at the cheapest times etc

    I’m my professional opinion I would not do any electrical diy full stop. Get a nic eic, napit or any other cps registered electrician to carry out the works.

    • @TomsManShed
      @TomsManShed  2 года назад +1

      I did get a professional fully qualified electrician to connect it up at the main box and fit the ROH 132B Module etc as shown and mentioned in the video. As a gas engineer for 42 years I was capable of doing the donkey work like lifting the carpets and floor boards and screwing the box to the wall and getting the cable in place
      I mention that an electrician connected it a few times especially from 15mins on.

       @Tom's Man Shed No disrespect Tom but no decent sparky would terminate into the enclosure using sealant. A proper SWA gland would of made it tidier and much more waterproof than sealant even if it is a plastic enclosure. Please tell me its glanded properly at the consumer unit end and that the SWA is bonded to the the earth.
