    This man right here is what being a maker is all about. You can hear the pride in his voice when talking about his creation.

    I absolutely love that it's playing 'Bridge Over Troubled Water'!

    I see a man who's worked very hard on something he's enjoyed doing and yet still, we have some thumbs down. Some people are only ever happy tearing others down because they lack the ability and brain power to build things of their own and you know what... it wont make a damn difference to his trendous ability and belief in himself. Hats off to this guy, a tinkerer after my own heart!

    The wood pipes really gives it a soft relaxed sound.

    Well done. A lot of respect for work that took. Sounds better than a lot of pipe organs I've heard. It's a smoother transition from note to note. Having the wood different thickness on each instead of just length makes a big difference.

      @kentvandervelden 8 лет назад

      I wondered about that, and didn't realize that the thickness of the wood made a difference, and always have figured length was all.

    Really neat! A piece of clear acrylic or glass on that wind chest would have been awesome to see the inner workings.

    I went to that Maker Fair. The organ was even better in person. And of course it plays other songs.

    Nice project. MIDI in pipe organs does exist for longer already, I've been working on such instruments ~30 Years ago. Not Raspberry though :-)

    Nice... Maybe work on the note lengths...ability for non-legato. And perhaps muffling the solenoids :-)
    Reminds me of music I made with my 8080 back in the 80s.

      @trevader2562 8 лет назад +1

      I dont know, I love the clacking of the solenoids opening and closing as it changes notes, like a mini organ player is keeping time. I think it just adds a cool effect. though this does show that you literally can't please everyone ;)

      Totally - old tracker organs often clack along with the playing, but it can get tiring if overdone... (I love old tracker organs)

    I have been wanting to do this very thing! Except I have an actual pipe organ made in 1950. He ran his pipes off a single arduino, but I have 233 pipes... I would need 6 Arduinos to run it all! Still, I'm interested in how he did it with midi...

    Cool idea but it could be much refined. I would love to meet the guy and help him finalize the idea.
    The wires needs better management and need to be thicker, and the controller is a silly mix of 2 MCUs that need to communicate , but all you need is a matrix controller and a single MCU. (A simple shift register + RPi would work)

      An excellent Suggestion

    • @Ts6451

      I expect he considered how to implement the system before doing it this way. The cable management is all about preference(and just because he is showing it off does not mean the project is finished, you know) and he probably knows how much current his actuators need and so can select suitable wiring.
      As for the controller setup, well, from what I understood he is using MIDI between the Raspberry Pi and the Arduino, which means that technically the Arduino is the controller for the instrument(similarly to how a MIDI synth or other equipment will have it's own controller that decodes and executes the commands separately from the device that issues the commands) while the Raspberry Pi is acting as a more general purpose computer where he can play MIDI files and have a user interface.
      I wouldn't be surprised if he is considering adding more racks of pipes or other instruments later, and so wanted the flexibility of a MIDI system.

      Uh what else would it be playing? Recorded notes are usually stored in midi files. It would be much cooler if there was an actual keyboard connected to it, someone playing it.
