    Hi everyone! I think this video is pretty comprehensive on the topic of GCA and includes a sample answer where I share my screen. Similar to Googleyness, the GCA interview is confusing, so I hope this video helps! Please let me know in the comments if you would like me to do a videos focused on RRK and Leadership as those are more straightforward and might not require an entire video. Thanks!

      For leadership I'd be curious to know what you can do to REALLY stand out. Also, is this a good interview to let more of your personality shine through?

    • @jeffhsipepi
      @jeffhsipepi  4 года назад +2

      @@mirja3278 For leadership, it definitely shows your personality when you focus on a quality like empathy. This likely isn't the first item someone might categorize as an important quality for a leader, but I think it is a critical one. So yes, definitely an opportunity to show more of you in those types of interviews.

    Although Google says that GCA inteviews are not consulting case interviews, preparing & practicing consulting cases was the single best thing I did to prepare for my GCA interview! It gave me so much confidence going into the interview and I did very well as a result. For a business role I prepared frameworks for the top ten business cases (improving profits, entering new market, launching new product, pricing product, optimizing process, etc.) and surely, my GCA questions fell into one or more of those buckets. Also, thinking in buckets really helped in my approach and placing my answer in buckets (actually saying that too) worked for when one specific framework didn't apply/I couldn't think of one- creating buckets is a great backup option to structuring your answer! Then asking what bucket to dive deeper into, if at all... great content Jeff!

      Mirja, amazing!!! This is such an important comment, thank you! Consulting frameworks can be so helpful and impactful in preparing for GCA interviews as it really helps understand what is needed at a foundational level. I was unaware of these frameworks while I was at Google, but during my research I realized how truly impactful the could be. Thank you so much for sharing!

      @@jeffhsipepi Thank you! Btw, this doesn't only apply to GCA interviews. While interviewing at Amazon for another business role, I realized that all of my interviewers in senior business roles had a consulting background! Using consulting case frameworks not only made it easier to answer the questions but also reflected the interviewers own intellectual training! So they immediately responded well to my approach, as they were very familiar with the structure. It's a bit of getting into the phsychology of the interviewer, but with all the resources available now and info we can find on LinkedIn, I really think candidates should be paying attention to this! Also, nobody (!!) on RUclips is talking about adapting consulting cases for tech interviews, maybe something to consider making more content on... ;)

    Hi Jeff, this is really helpful for me to organise my thoughts related to the questions. I've a clarifying question: Are the questions related to specific industries only asked if you're interviewing for related roles. Eg I've no background in Cloud and only understand the basics of it. Can I still be asked a cloud related question, if ive no background and am not interviewing for cloud? This is easier for businesses like email, social media where we are an active user but may be difficult for technical businesses like ads, cloud etc. Thoughts?

    • @jeffhsipepi
      @jeffhsipepi  Месяц назад +1

      @sakshiabrol8430, candidates are not typically asked specific questions about product areas outside of the domain of the role and or their expertise. You could be asked a higher level hypothetical question about a product area and in that case, always solve like you are in the role you are interviewing for! I hope this helps!

    Hi Jeff. This information is amazing, very informative, and it’s quite interesting how preparing for a GCA interview may translate in improving or polishing current problem solving abilities - for example, I may be used to a certain approach to face challenges- like empirical knowledge- but most frameworks provided allow for a clearer and more effective thought process (I work for a small CPG company so this can be definitely useful for us to improve our problem framing and solving process). Thank you so much! Additionally, I would like to learn more about examples of great leadership in entry level- middle management positions, that have resulted in success stories for both the project or department, and the company overall. Thank you again (and sorry for my broken English! :) ).

    Thank you for a detailed breakdown of a typical GCA questions. Typically how many GCA questions get covered in a 45 minutes - 1 hour Google interview? What is a good amount of time an interviewee should spend working through a GCA question during the interview?

    • @jeffhsipepi
      @jeffhsipepi  3 года назад +2

      Anoop, in 2021 we are seeing a theme, two open-ended questions and one behavioral question. Usually, one open-ended question is random and the other is more roles specific, think 15 minutes each on these answers including follow up questions from your interviewer. One behavioral question will be about a larger/complex initiative or project, and this answer will take about 10 minutes with follow up questions. This would leave 5 minutes for your questions in a 45 minute interview.

      Raffaele, the framework establishes you know what you are talking about and outlines/organizes the critical items you can/will cover in your solution. The assumptions help you narrow your focus. So for an APMM role, you might use a framework that looks at the goals, historical data, design, timeline, stakeholders, and execution plan. Then in your assumptions, you might assume you have three months to market the newest version of the Nest Thermostat for example. Because without picking a certain product, I have no visual and cannot get as connected to your answer, I hope this helps!

      Roh, most likely 2 questions, maybe 3. The most important items are clarifying the question, presenting a high level framework, providing a high level solution and checking back in. Your initial answer with some back and forth can be done in 5 minutes, then allow for the follow ups. I have never heard of an interviewer getting to 5 GCA questions in 45 minutes. Hi Jeff! When you were going through the first few questions pertaining to the keywords convince, expand, GCP customer, Cloud Services (e.g. are they a new customer, how are they utilizing cloud services, learn more about documented goals and objectives) - is this all part of the “Clarify” step of the CFS? I thought Clarify was several short yes/no and either/or questions. I am also surprised to hear you say it would only take 90 seconds to go through all of that material you screen shared before the Framework (especially if they were questions directed toward the interviewer). Am I misunderstanding the Clarify step? Or perhaps this is Exploratory (CEFS?) - does that mean listing off these important details, but not asking questions?

    • @jeffhsipepi
      @jeffhsipepi  3 года назад +1

      Jeffrey, you are correct, clarifying questions should definitely be either or/yes or no questions. 90 seconds is all it should take because you shouldn't really ask more that 3-5 questions and after the first question, group your questions together. Let me know if you have follow up questions. Thanks!

    hi Jeff, really great content. But can i ask what is the difference between the framework and the solutions. they look like a bit overlapped tho, as in the framework is about which areas you will be focusing on when conving the client, which can also be solutions?

    • @jeffhsipepi
      @jeffhsipepi  2 года назад +2

      Patrick, the framework establishes you know your stuff and gets you organized, but the goal of the solution is to get more into the weeds and focus on one concept at a time with more depth. So technically, yes, the framework does answer the question, but provides no insight into you or your capabilities. Establish the framework quickly (30 seconds or less), then make some good assumptions, and dive deep into one concept to give your interviewer a visual of you and your ability to perform in the role.

    Hi sir,
    Soon I’m going to face a google interview , can you help me with question & how to best answers it “imagine you r working on gmail and competitors start charging a $5 monthly fee for their product. How you assess this situation & what recommendation would you make to your team?

    • @jeffhsipepi
      @jeffhsipepi  3 года назад +4

      Nitin, yes, this is a tricky question and a commonly asked GCA question. Two important items to focus in on in this answer is how you would collect and evaluate the data, and ultimately in your recommendation focus on benefits. If a competitor to gmail starts charging $5 a month for their product when gmail dominates the US email market at 44%, are you really worried, or is this an opportunity to capture larger market share and make more money off ads and not worry about their monthly fee :). I hope this insight helps!

      @@NitinSharma139 You will want to clarify if they want you to focus on a hardware or software product and if they want you to improve the overall product or a feature/functionality. Then for this type of question you can name the product before the framework if you like. Present your framework and then really dive into a specific product you love, but could also be improved. The most common product people focus on when I ask this question is Google Maps, but pick one that you like, good luck!

How do you know when to escalate data and present data. How do you create impactful solutions that are repeatable. These would be for RRK. Hey Jeff, thanks for this video. I have my interviews with Google next week and using your content to prepare. The example question you are using seems very much sales related (for Google cloud business). Should I expect a similar question if I am interviewing for an operational role? You're going into a huge amount of details with your questions part and I wouldn't be able to ask so many not knowing the cloud business. The way you presented the answer just made me really nervous :) I thought it was supposed to be on a more high level honestly. Now I'm worried :P

Spend some time this weekend getting more comfortable with cloud technologies and one underutilized resource is the testimonials page - cloud.google.com/customers. Take the high level details from the example because there are a number of items that will be applicable for any role. Good luck!

      Aishwarya, thank you for the positive feedback! My number one recommendation is networking, but not by asking, by giving. Reach out to people that work at Google on LinkedIn and share a cool article or video with them. Don't ask to have them help you get a job, just start building your connections at Google in this way and over time it may open some doors for you. This is one simple suggestion, but also, keep trying, if Google is a company you really want to work for, keep at it, and it will happen for you. Good luck!

      @@gullal1 For these random questions your thought process should not stray too far away from the job. Specifically, if you are interviewing for a Sales role you would focus on the best ways to monetize the parking lot, while a product manager might try and find the best or most creative design. So you will use the same clarifying questions and frameworks that you would use for any open-ended question, and when thinking of the solution keep it as close to the position you are interviewing for, as possible.
