I think it works like in blackjack counting cards. Every card has a value so when you remove 3 values when it was dealt in 3s (52/3- value counted) takes you to the chosen card ! It works every time for me thanks man !

After you cut the deck into 3 piles how many do you count if you have a Jack, Queen or a King?
