    Our quest to take The What’s Underneath Project global continues with our new series of global style warriors. Shot in Paris and Berlin. First, we have Lauren Bastide. Blonde and stereotypically pretty, Lauren was constantly told she should be a model growing up: “society’s ultimate power position for a woman.”
    Instead, she became a journalist and landed her dream job at Elle magazine. Over the decade she spent there, Lauren witnessed the industry she once idolized morph beyond recognition: advertising’s perverse influence over journalism was staggering. The final straw was when a furry Fendi keychain advertorial took editorial precedence over her feature on a case of police brutality.
    “At some point you have to listen to your guts, I guess, and my guts told me to get out of there,” said Lauren. The vintage-layered mother of two walked out and never looked back. This, and lots more radical realness, like dispelling the myth that pregnancy and motherhood is always a bohemian dream, in Lauren’s episode.
    Today you can find Lauren doing it her way on “La Poudre,” an unfiltered, empowering podcast for women. bit.ly/2m2n4k4

    One of the best ones I watched. I loved how honest she was about herself as a mother and the ending was...intense, to say the least.

    "I had a sister and she died and I'm not comfortable with the years she was alive."
    Like fuck, this is another level of brutal honesty. So brave. Such truth. This woman is incredible.

      Skims24 can you explain this to me I’m kind of confused? Does she mean like she is okay that she is dead now because when she was alive she didn’t like her? Or is she sad that her sister is gone?

    • @TheOwlBooks
      @TheOwlBooks 6 лет назад +10

      From what i understand is that it seems like her sister was going through a hard time during the years she was a alive and maybe they didnt have the opportunity to resolve those issues together?

      I think she means that she just can't think of when her sister was alive, she misses her too much. The memories of her being here are too difficult to remember and deal with with because she's still grieving. Such a brave and beautiful woman. I hope she manages to face those memories one day.

    Every time I watch a StyleLikeU video, something is being said that I've been feeling or thinking for so long but never been able to properly articulate. And then it hits me like a hammer. But in a positive way. First it's sad but then it blooms into an incredible comfortableness with this "state of womanhood" which connects women. I'm very grateful these helpful experiences are what social media can be used for as well. Thank you!

      StyleLikeU Awesome. Thanx!
      You guys composed an ingenious layout for deeply humanizing intimate interviews. By listening to them open up, I feel less alien to myself. These videos reassure us that vulnerability is beautiful and a sign of strength not weakness. It's multi-layered here too (an overkill necessary to dissipate doubt on the matter); from the honesty to the self-reflection and all the way to the physical stripping down to the undies. Reading the comments just cements the acceptance that started with the speakers themselves and, of course, the interviewers. All the best xxx

    • @KP-ul2ep
      @KP-ul2ep 6 лет назад +2

      Well, unfortunately, we live in a society where men are not allowed to be vulnerable and emotionally open like this (it starts in childhood when boys are told they aren't allowed to cry). So that is why there's unfortunately not many interviews of men.

    Props to her for being so honest, she might also seem very down to earth but in my opinion behind it all, she IS that french girl who is quite superficial, way into looks and fashion (not surprising she worked at ELLE). She wrote an article at ELLE about "plus-size" girls and fashion (plus size in France is US size 6) which upset so many people. I don't think you can have quite a sane representation of body image and appearance when you have worked in that kind of environment, even though she is critical of its superficiality in the beginnning of the video.

    • @mili8403
      @mili8403 6 лет назад +5

      Katrina G. She talked about that article I think in an episode of La Poudre... said it was a mistake and made her understand things... everybody make mistakes, and some understand them, and change :) not all people working or having worked at Elle are "superficiel" and what she did in this episode here is so not "superficiel".

    • @kat.5927
      @kat.5927 6 лет назад +4

      You are french aren't you :) Indeed I shouldn't have used the word superficial but what I meant is that when you spend most of your time in such an atmosphere like the one that is a fashion magazine, it messes with your head and your representation of looks and beauty, because they "condition" you to think that way. As for her apology I didn't know she did it, but I feel like that's the kind of situation where you say oh I'm sorry but it's because you've been reprimanded and have gotten so much hate, not because you actually feel sorry. But I hope for her that it really changed her.
