If some people left a dying Earth on a long haul or "generation" ship traveling at high relativistic speeds (i.e. sub-light, but a substantial fraction of light speed), the time dilation effects would cause less time to have passed from their perspective than from Earth's (or some other planet's) perspective. So later when the "grav drive" technology is developed, a ship using FTL could "catch up" with the relativistic ship. The FTL crew would have experienced several centuries of time as Earth and Alpha Centuari did, as compared to decades or perhaps only a few years that the relativistic ship would have experienced. TLDR; later development of FTL could explain their surprise at encountering human diaspora (in their view, "other survivors") from Earth.
I think that's a really solid theory actually. If that ship you find is an Earth Colony Ship it lines up, as it just appears to be floating there. Assuming they are from the same sequence it also appears to be a self sustaining Vault esque vessel. Really cool feature if it turns out to be correct!
I agree completely Bethesda have base this on a NASA punk style, which would have to include relativistic theories, and also the ship looks too small to be a generation ship. However, they do seem to have artificial gravity. My guess is that they were travelling to a different system, perhaps not alpha Centauri.
Conversely, I believe it may be slow-boating it's way across the galaxy at sub-relativistic speeds, allowing our ship to be able to catch it and dock. Modern gravity drives means ships capable of relativistic speeds are unnecessary and dangerous, so it's unlikely that we would otherwise be capable of intercepting a ship moving at even a fraction of light speed Being a generational ship, these people would likely be the descendants of the original colonists, educated by the original colonists into their own history and origin. We can also assume that this relic vessel lacks modern sub-space communication equipment, which means they probably rely on radio signals... and if they assume themselves to be the last survivors, even that equipment is likely unmonitored, if it's still functional at all. I cannot WAIT to find this ship! The story sounds fascinating, and I want some of those Trek-esque uniforms for my own crew :D
Something to note about the arch shot. You can see both the sun and stars at the same time. If it's Earth, that means its atmosphere is mostly gone. This could also explain its barren conditions now, as there is little to protect it from solar rays and winds.
