- The trailer for Lady Ballers, the Daily Wire's controversial new sports comedy, seemed to cause quite a stir. And now that the movie itself is out, I figured I'd take a look and find out of its actually any good.

Well this movie sucked. When South Park (who did this joke first and MUCH better) is offensive, it is usually backed up with a layered storytelling and perfectly nuanced social commentary that points out the hypocrisies of both sides within the political spectrum in order to appeal to everyone as opposed to 1 side. It utilises absurdity to ultimately lead to a core message that is the heart of the episode/movie. That is what Trey and Matt want their audience to take away from their episodes. Not that "South Park mocked Disney" or "South Park makes fun of Transgender athletes". This movie is just offensive just for the sake of being offensive. It doesn't balance both sides, it just says "our side is better". They actually want the offensive parts to be the takeaway, because all I've seen so far is videos of Ben Shapiro or Michael Knowles laughing at how triggered people are. This movie was made to get a rise out of people. This is NOT how you do social commentary.

I think conservatives focus too much on getting back at the left that it ruins their projects. The comedies of the early 2000s were not trying to beat you over the head to get back at any particular group, they were just trying to make funny movies.

Hopefully this will inspire more companies to go back to just having fun and making good comedies and films without fear of backlash for not pandering to tiktok toddlers.

Uh, politics is the whole point of the film. If you separate the politics there isn't really anything left.
To be fair, I watched it with my retired parents who don't follow internet trends, they're very much general audience. They have no idea who the daily wire are. They laughed out loud the whole way through and loved the film. As did I.
This is why I don't believe a lot of stuff the Drinker says. Anybody with common sense would love this movie.
Internet culture gobblers that watch Drinker are not the general audience they think they are. If they we're they'd realise that his takes on so many things are contrived and tailored, and always contradictory. Things he complaints about in one movie he praises in the next. His reviews of Dungeons and Dragons, as well as Mario recently have shown his utter inconsistency.
This movie will likely appeal to the average person, it reminds me of other comedies from the 2000s that appealed to common tropes, but this is just a 2023 trope.

I thought it was quite good, exactly what it was trying to be - nothing more, nothing less. One of the gags I loved was the news anchors getting forcibly dragged further and further into the world of DEI victimhood. Each time they appeared on screen the ante was upped. Drinker said the pacing was off, but I disagree that’s one of the things they actually got right. Also as far as the “echo chamber” criticism, I think that’s just silly. If the Daily Beast made a pro trans comedy, would there be any expectation that it would be fair and balanced? I mean the idea is just frigging absurd quite frankly.
I bought a subscription to the daily wire just to watch this movie. My husband and I were cry-laughing the whole time. It felt like watching a 2000s comedy again.

It was sometimes funny, sometimes a little preachy, sometimes a little dull, but honestly, it was still better than most recent AAA movies. It was overall solid and well acted. My wife wants to watch it again!
I haven't seen it, but from watching the trailer and a number of online reviews about it, I'm confused about exactly what it's preaching. Most obviously, it tells the story from the point of view of the antagonists, who of course tend to be the villains in a conventional story. You can do that, but then you risk making evil characters look sympathetic. To be sure, the movie makes fun of them, but it also lets us understand their reasons for what they're doing.
Even more confusing is the fact that the "heroic" female athletes are also the butt of jokes, getting humiliated in slapstick scenarios against the supposedly superior antagonists. You can have your protagonists suffer and even fail, but ultimately they need to prevail or the story is a tragedy. So, what exactly is the attitude of LADY BALLERS? Is it socially conservative because it's anti-trans people in women's sports and doesn't present women as sexual objects, or is it socially liberal in that it doesn't condescend to women by assuming they're too weak to suffer physical comedy and (again) doesn't present women as sexual objects? (Feminism goes in both directions, you know.) If this is supposed to be a "political" movie, it's a failure.
@@SeasideDetective2 I don't think we watched the same movie. Your questions feel like they came from someone's review of the movie instead of watching it. You really miss the mark on a lot of the concepts of the movie. My wife wanted to watch the movie twice. Since you don't seem to understand, the movie is a comedy about men pretending to be women in order to get an edge in sports, but in the end, the men willingly give in to allow the women to win. Some of the lines of the movie are literally things that could be said in this day and age and definitely said in the future if all of this continues to happen.

Nothing says fair and balanced like claiming a comedy didn't "explore the complexity of the issue." I'm normally in agreement with Drinker, but this wasn't a documentary, and there was no need to go middle ground on it. It was exclusive to DW. Did some jokes fall flat? Sure, just like every comedy. Ofc it will lean a certain way, and ofc it would be exaggerated. (although how exaggerated is certainly debatable)

Great review. I agree with this almost completely, but you didn’t mention the fact that it’s only available for streaming on their very small, fledgling streaming service. That fact had to really affect the production decisions. In effect, they were literally only making it for DW fans, specifically the ones that have been watching them for free and haven’t taken the subscriber plunge yet, so it REALLY was playing to its audience. The fact that it had some comedic value that could be appreciated by anyone with an open mind is kind of amazing.

Robert Downey's performance in Tropic Thunder is definitely a top 5 comedy performance of all time and possibly a top 10 performance of any genre all time. It was amazingly funny

I'll watch this purely because they actually tried to bring back late 90s, mid 2000s comedy. We need more dumb fun comedy films.
Yeah it feels like we've had way too many movies that just inject cheap gag comedy into otherwise serious situations thanks largely to Disney with initially the Pirates of the Carribbean movies which then became prominent in the Marvel movies and then leaked into even freaking Star Wars and a huge variety of movies over the 2010 and 2020's. Tropic Thunder and Dodgeball were like some of the absolute peak comedy films and it's sad that we've gone so long without anything challenging them.

The movie would’ve benefited from more production time, since they made it pretty quickly, and could’ve used some help in acting, writing, and editing, but the DW hosts have noted that it basically had to be done in-house because even actors and writers who have already been canceled wouldn’t dare go near it

Excellent review, and the criticism is well deserved. I did very much enjoy the film, and I think it is worth the watch, even though it is certainly longer than truly needed
Let's be honest, it's a step above indie films, but well below Hollywood production levels.
I'm on board with this explanation. This was obviously made quickly, with in-house actors, in-house writers, filmed in secret, and probably on a shoestring budget. And at the end of the day, this is essentially a made-for-TV movie. Even if it's just average, that's still a win.

Generally speaking the further you get into politics and the clearer it is you’re making a statement the less funny it gets because you aren’t really joking at that point.

If an amateur basketball player loses 12-21 against prime LeBron in 1v1, most basketball fans would probably give credit to the amateur. LeBron shouldn’t be letting a nobody score that much on him. I listened to Jeremy speak on how difficult it was to get talent to work on the movie. That’s ultimately why they had to cast it using Daily Wire employees and contributors, because everyone in Hollywood was scared to star or work on the movie.

Nobody seeking a career in Hollywood wouldn't come within a mile of any Dailywire movie. So they'll never have a first tier actor in it. That's OK, because it's a parody. I bet this is a lot of fun, albeit not perfect by any strech of imagination.

@@Anoneemus_Noenayme Old Dads also cost over 8x what Lady Ballers cost to produce (57M vs 7M) and, frankly, none of that extra money made it to the screen. The acting wasn't better and neither was the cinematography and it certainly wasn't funnier. Old Dads also took much longer to make. Lady Ballers went from idea to done in just a few short months.
If the Daily Wire continues to improve and can continue punching above their weightclass on a shoestring budget then I can see them really becoming a force to be reckoned with.
I laughed more than I thought I would... it wasn't the funniest movie ever... but I would def watch it again with a friend.
My family, who have no idea what DW+ is had fun and ample laughs.

I've watched it several times and, weirdly enough, I found it funnier the second time through. The first viewing matched Drinker's description precisely: hilarious physical comedy with long stretches of somewhat tortured character moments and one liners in between them. The second viewing improved on that impression, though. The narrative portions of the movie improved for me. Not even sure why, honestly.
My only problem is that every joke or gag in the movie is the same thing we've heard from conservatives for the last 3 years. If the movie came out sooner it would've been funnier.
You’re pretty much absolutely right. The only thing I wish you would have talked about was the production value. I was shocked personally at how GOOD the movie looked even as it failed to make me laugh. Ben’s first line was the funniest thing in that movie but his follow up almost ruined the humor of the first one. It kind of was a microcosm of the whole movie.
My favorite part is that, they wanted this movie to be a documentary. But no actual sports event would allow them to put in "trans" athletes. So this whole movie's message, and the whole point. About warning the dangers of actual trans athletes is not grounded in reality
This goes to something Chrissie Mayr said. It was kind of funny, but needed a few comedians refining the script before production. Jeremy Boreing himself (who wrote the script) has said it's hard to get movie people to work on DW projects because they're all afraid of being cancelled. Hoping as DW grows, they get more top-shelf people (Chrissie Mayr? hint hint) and things keep moving up for them.
Yeah, the thought of possibly wrecking your career for the sake of a DW streaming production probably strikes even the few professional actors willing to work for them as too much risk and too little reward.
Please, if ISIS or Hamas made their own streaming services, these "writers" and "actors", would be calling their agents to get on-board.

Funny (heh) that some of the bad comedy movies I remember in the 2000's were made or star comedians.
Watched it with my wife a few days ago. It was pretty funny and worked well as a parody/social commentary , but at times, the pacing really dragged. For a small, independent film studio, it was pretty solid. Basically, it is NOT a timeless classic, but it came out at JUST the right time to be relevant
Whats frustrating is that if you actually understood the state of men dominating women in sports by claiming some delusion it wouldn't come off as parody. There aren't whole teams of men competing but every single character was a carbon copy of famous and recent men who dominated a woman's sport. It can't be satire if the satire is true.
Wasn't there a weight lifting coach with a full beard who entered a women's weight lifting competition in Canada to destroy the record a "trans" guy set?

They don't wear the heavy padding and face shield like in male hockey because it's specifically designed for female strength level. It's also one of the sports that will give a girl a full scholarship to college.
@@kellharris2491 I've said this on other media, but will reiterate: The injuries that trans-females inflict are intentional, be it field hockey, volleyball or MMA. It, to my eyes, appears as a manifestation of self-loathing and the never-ending need for attention, no matter how negative.
@kellharris2491 I have always been astounded by how much danger there is in field hockey relative to how little padding the players wear. For a sport that had a cool concept, I never wanted to play it because it just looked brutal.
That injury attracted attention because the shot came from a guy, but any shot that hit someone right in the mouth would likely do damage. Maybe it would have had a lower mph coming from a girl but I dont think it would have mattered much in that case.

When they got to the finals and the opposing female team was also a bunch of guys, but big black guys, I laughed out loud. That was a good bit.
You can appreciate what DW is trying to do with their entertainment business and also realize that they still have a lot of growing left to do with their movies.

1. Bad or overly preachy writing
2. Poor acting
3. Low production value
4. All of the above
I am cautiously optimistic about the DW crew, but for the time being, anyone who wants to make it big in film has to go to Hollywood. Until that starts to change, we will be stuck where we are.

Being they just started up making movie's I'd say their doing ok so far.
It was on par with most stupid, goofball comedies. It was funny, it was cute, it was over the top, and it was worth the watch.

It’s a stupid goofball movie WITH a message, just as good humor should be. (Full disclosure I’ve not seen the movie, just clips. It seems funny but amateur. Which is what id expect given the cast)

I was actually impressed. I had super low expectations and sure, I didn’t laugh near as much as something like anchorman, but I definitely had quite a few good belly laughs. It’s not for everyone and not every joke hits, but it’s entertaining and none of the acting was so bad it made me cringe.

Its well known independants make the BEST comedies. Think the Full Monty. Or heck think Monty Python, who had to get a millionaire to fund their movie. NOBODY would make Life Of Brian its was that controversial. And you know you have controversy when COUNTRIES ban your movie. When you have people in the streets both demanding you be banned, and yet in other parts of the country where politicians ban it, you have people in the streets demanding they be able to see it.
THAT is controversy and now is recognized as one of funniest movie ever, acted by the way by the WRITERS and animators.
So thats the bar to evaluate ANY 'independant' where they can make a movie with NO studio oversight. And Michael Palin would like want to club me with a fish, and rightfully, for even mentioning this movie and theirs in teh same comment section.
The irony is that the ONLY people remotely offended by this would be women athletes, who are the butt of the movie, not just the joke. Although I read an article once that said some thing like eight out of ten american males think they can actually beat Serena Williams in tennis.
So in the end the only butt of the joke is the men who are so predictably cartoonish, and women Trans people are just like "wtf is this?|
Sadly, as Monty Python proved in Life of Brian FORTY YEARS AGO, you can actually make hilarious trans jokes, its context that matters. Preachy never works in comedy.

On top of what you said, by giving an honest review, he allows the Daily Wire to hear where they fell short and improve in their next movies. Getting a fair and constructive critique is the best way to improve at what you're doing.
It sounds like Daily Wire still hasn't hit it out of the park with any of their film attempts so far, but it's good seeing them continue to try. I really do wish them success in the long run. It can only help to have more competition in the entertainment industry.

I don't like majority of the DW cast and don't like the director either. But I can't lie, this movie was pretty good.
Their movie Run Hide Fight was absolutely amazing. If you have not seen this movie yet check it out. This was movie theater quality and a definite A+ in my book.

Glad to see Drinker had a critical view of the movie. This is exactly the kind of support Daily Wire need. They need to know what works and what doesn't. Hopefully they'll take these lessons and improve their next features. I've long given up hope Hollywood would do the same but Daily Wire is new enough I'll give them a few years to figure things out.

Daily Wire knows how to take criticism. They look at everything from audience reviews to the views and money obtained, all useful signals to see if they are making a good product.

Honestly that's awesome that the movie didn't suck. In the grand scheme of things, not sucking is actually a huge victory. I don't think anyone expected this to be good at all, but if the drinker said that there are actually laughs in the movie, then that's pretty damn impressive coming from a company that doesn't even focus primarily on films and didn't even have professional comedy actors to cast with. I'll definitely watch it

Reviews like this are why the Drinker is the GOAT. He's made multiple videos with Ben Shapiro and has been extremely critical of woke Hollywood movies, and yet, rather than turning into a shill and saying the whole thing was amazing, he gave an honest review of this film as if he didn't have a horse in the race at all.
I think he still treated this review with kid gloves. If a movie has a hamfisted left wing message in one scene it never gets a pass. But this two hour long strawmen of a movie gets some light criticism.

Not a Daily Wire subscriber, but I can appreciate what they're trying to do, and from what I've seen, they are about the only conservative media company aside from Angel Studios that's trying to carve out a place in cinema and entertainment. I'm sure they will continue to get better as they produce more films and gain more experience. They may never achieve the level of prominence as Disney or Universal, but if they can continue improving their productions, they can definitely make themselves a competitor.

The daily wire actually tried to make this a documentary originally, but they couldn't find a real life team that would let "trans" men play against women. I think that says something about the whole debate on trans people in sports.

It had its flaws, but I genuinely liked the debate this movie brings up. Even in its heavy handed jokes and commentary, it is worth looking into in the sports world.
You should check out the South Park episode "Board Girlz" then. The Drinker nailed it when he said they discussed this issue in so much more depth in only twenty minutes, almost ten years ago.... (Matt and Trey are prophets lol)

The fact that Drinker evaluated this film at the standard of some of the comedy classics, shows that Daily Wire is on the cusp of running with the big dogs, on a fraction of the resources, experience, and manpower. They'd be wise to learn from Drinker's guidance going forward.

Being halfway through the movie, they still have a long long long way to go. CD comparing the movie to mid 2000 comedies stems from the fact that that was what they were aiming for. And he is very easy on them, one should add.
I haven’t watched any of the DW shows or productions. But considering that 90% of the cast for this film is basically just a bunch of youtubers, who funded the project themselves, it’s pretty neat it’s even made in the first place.
I do hope that one day they’ll have a serious budget to make a decent production and have a true smash hit.

I appreciate the objectivity. I have not seen it yet, but this was my impression from the trailer. Still, I am very glad it got made. Comedy is on life support at this point. We can't expect it to run a 4 minute mile after what it has been through. But maybe this is a start on the long road to recovery.

If they pulled a comedy genius like Ricky Gervais as a co-writer, it might have been really good. But good marks for general production, it didn't feel like amateur cinema.

I watched it yesterday and I think your review is spot on! A much tighter edit and scrapping irrelevant crap would make it much better.
I think the most important thing is the fact that this movie actually exists, it is nice to break away from big media corporations. While it could use some polish, for a first time, they did a solid job, so it will only get better in the future.
From a small studio with a fraction of the resources that a major and more established movie studio has, and considering that this is their first ever attempt at a movie made by them from the ground up, it’s a clunky but promising first step. With time and experience I think DW will be a force to be reckoned with.
On the one hand, I encourage anyone to make an alternative to the hollywood trash we have to put up with. That being said, the Daily Wire cvcks are not going to make anything truly helpful. They got themselves all excited over telling everyone that there are two genders, and the trans agenda has gotten ridiculous. But that's easy. Try to get them to address the institutional war against White people, then DW recoils. They'll just poop out yet another movie consisting of "jokes" such as jews praising black dicks, like in Lady Ballers. Daily Wire is toxic.
But just like the critical drinker says, if the movie only favors right leaning people and not average Joe, then it won't go far.
It’s a very easy topic to make fun of. The topic has been poked fun of so much that it feels as if the viewer had heard every joke before it’s delivered. It’s like making a movie that just makes fun of fat people or little people. Sure there’s jokes in it, but it’s nothing that the dimmest viewer at home couldn’t come up with themselves. This movie doesn’t say anything about what the daily wire can produce as a movie. I’ll wait to see if they manage to create anything where the jokes aren’t hand fed to them by such an easy target.

I found the movie to be what it was. A solid effort with some hits and misses. I enjoyed the fact that when it was said and done the coach saw the error in his ways. I give it a 7/10 but like some had said it is a ton better than 90 percent of today’s comedy.
Despite not being a big "hahahaha" movie it was certainly a very enjoyable thing to watch.

That's high praise for the performances given that almost none of them are actual actors. (Almost all of the actual actors they asked, even ones that were essentially cancelled, wouldn't touch it.)
Brett Cooper is actually an actor...yet I could see why she never really made it as an actor. Liked the movie, but she can't act.

Unlike most things released recently I’m actually interested in watching something like this. I miss Police Squad and Airplane style spoofs.
You won't find that here, Airplane and Police Academy had class and were movies anyone could enjoy, but as the Drinker pointed out in this video, this movie panders hard to their conservative viewers while not really offering much for anyone else.
David Zucker released a movie in 2008 that was supposed to lampoon the libs. I bought it because of all the hate reviews. Then I watched it and it was just a shameless character assassination of Michael Moore. They might as well have called the movie "Michael Moore is a doo-doo head". I don't even care for Michael Moore but it wasn't funny at all. First movie I actually threw in the trash.

YMS' lion king review was like 2 years late, and it still isn't finished. If i go to his page right now, he's only just got around to reviewing flash, and his general upload schedule has slowed to an average of like 3 videos a month. He also tends to want to pivot towards niche arthouse film and is pretty disdainful and dismissive of mainstream movies. Even when the MCU was good, he didn't like it. Meanwhile the drinker sticks to releases people are likely to be aware of, and reports on them in a timely manner, and only really goes off the beaten path when recommending something he actually likes, which is usually fairly safe, tom clancy-flavored Dad-bait.
Factor in the folksy, working-class, vaguely plinkett-esque character he plays, and it's not surprising he's managed to be so successful.
I watched it on launch night. Made me laugh a few times and cringe a few times too. The acting was a little rough but in an interview Jeremy explained that they tried getting better actors but no one was willing to put their career on the line so they had to do it with DW talent and friends.
Hopefully the actors will have a chance to learn and improve

This review is spot on. The film has some genuinely funny moments and some good physical comedy. But it needs to be edited as there are scenes that drag on and others that are unnecessary to the story. It could be a half hour shorter. The skewering of wokeness is sometimes funny but other times seems forced, like everyone had to get their favorite woke takedown put somewhere in the film. Overall a solid effort.

It was a fun movie. The impressive part was what they were able to do on such a short turnaround, with so few established actors. I think they went from idea to filmed movie in seven weeks.
If they can replicate that turnaround time and make at least competent movies, they'll be short-circuiting Hollywood in a very relevant way.

Or at least hire him to help doing editing and post production, his greatest criticism here was that it could be slimmed down a lot, and well... This is a post production issue, so to bring him in as a viewer of early screenings to give these sort of advice would be really good for them.

Feels weird that just pointing out reality is considered a conservative standpoint these days. Reality should not have become a left/right issue, and it's wild how this is exactly what happened.

It’s not really. I’m as left wing as they come but I’m dead against all these modern ideals. They’re just painted as left vs right issues. For god sake women’s rights are as left of an issue as has ever existed and we’re all called right wingers now for not agreeing that a woman can have a penis.
It's not though. Extreme opinions on both sides are very skewed from reality. Do you know anyone who has different political beliefs than yourself? It's a pendulum. Once all this left wing BS cools down, the BS on the right will grow. Back and forth with societal views.
A famous radical left politician just used the phrase "we are cornered by reality". Reality, as "normal" people define it, is conservative, because the radical deconstructionism of the left has the negation of values and shared reality as a starting point before they make up their "reality".
It really is weird, isn't it? You'd think "male-born bodies are unequivocally stronger than female-born ones" would be one of those hard facts long since turned into common sense, regardless of what political side you'd see yourself as.
