  • In Minimax 1100r Wood Aircraft Build - Making Wing Root Fairings I make some fiberglass fairings to cover the gap between the fuselage and the wing.

    Finally caught up 😁 after probably a year! Well worth the effort, particularly the build videos. Big thanks for putting the effort into making the vids, I know there was a lot of work in that. Hope you are well and back to flying with a new prop soon.

      Thanks Michael, we are in LA county but we’re in the high desert so all of the fires are in the other side of the mountain. It’s crazy what I’ve been seeing in the news, difficult to believe.

    Nice little splash moulded fairing. I would have used glass tissue as a finish lamination to reduce the amount of micro but we all do different thing. Nice little touch 🙂

    That's pretty cool Dennis. Those look nice and I am glad to finally see how you were gonna close that gap. On a side note, since my RV-8 dream is dead, I am considering just building a 1550V-max. If for no other reason than to just have something to do. I'll probably won't keep it in a hangar but make it something I can trailer and road trip then explore areas of interest with. I mean, I'm just disgusted with the cost of aviation right now and have no desire to spend every penny I have building an airplane. 🤦‍♂

    I have used the back side of a plastic spoon to make radius and fillets with epoxy. you can then use the front side of the spoon to scoop/scrape up the excess. Keeps your hands/gloves a little cleaner.

      Hey there!
      I’ve been waiting on my new prop to arrive. Since the 54x24 had me flying at such a narrow speed range, I decided to wait for the new prop. It ships this week so super excited to get it.

    • @1hornet1
      @1hornet1 25 дней назад

      @DTMinimax Oh cool. I rewashed your last episode where you talked about that. I was under the impression with that amount of horsepower to weight would yield better results. I'm a bigger guy so I'm gonna need all the help I can get if I build one. Good luck brother. Thanks for the reply!

    Hay Dennis - I was wondering about the status of your new prop as I am next in line with Dominic. I wanted to see how your new one performs before giving him the go ahead. I will need a climbing prop, as my backyard runway is 1,350' with 60' pine trees at each end. I was considering a 56x22 or 58x20. Also, could your lack of climb performance be partially caused by a high thrust line? The engine mount plans show the engine mounted directly on the wood beams - I noticed you used rather tall stand-offs. Your build looks great - hope you can get it to fly as good as it looks. - Denis

    • @DTMinimax
      @DTMinimax  2 месяца назад

      I’m supposed to get the new prop, 56x22 any time now.
      The size of my stand-off’s is because Scott is making a different mounting bracket now that goes up instead of down like it used to. Im certainly anxious to see how the 22 performs. The 54x24 works fine but the speed range is narrow and the engine is working harder turning more rpm’s, but it’s not producing much for the extra rpm. I really believe the 22 is going to be the ticket. Scott says for our draggy planes, the larger diameter the better.

      Doing well. I had to order a new prop so I’m just waiting for it to come in. It should be any time now. I wasn’t comfortable with the narrow speed range of the one I have on there now.

  • @1hornet1

    Regarding my other comment, did you make a video talking about the cost of getting a kit vs. sourcing your own materials? I couldn't find one but was wondering if you had the cash in your pocket and were going to start building, would you still source the materials yourself?

    • @DTMinimax
      @DTMinimax  6 месяцев назад +1

      I estimated that I saved about $2,000 but at the cost of about 100 hours of additional build time. If I didn’t have such great access to the lumber, and 45 minutes from Aircraft Spruce, that savings would have disappeared in a hurry in freight cost alone. So I would have definitely gone with the kit.
