When I came a little boy I would blast this thru my bedroom window that was right next to the porch where we gave out candy...I thot I was scaring the kids, lol
I don't think there was ever a real "Monster Mash" dance. It was a takeoff of "The Mash Potato" which was a popular dance at the time. The song became a number one hit just before Halloween of 1962.
You do the Mashed Potato steps with your feet but do monster imitations with your upper body. I think maybe James Brown did the original Mashed Potato. You'll recognize it when you see it. ruclips.net/video/lzTwx6bJeBU/видео.html
Am I the ONLY one that MISSES the many many "novelty songs" that used to be on the radio and on record in the '50s and early '60s. Dying art for sure, never to be resurrected unfortunately. They were ALWAYS fun!!
Nice Harri! Next you need to do "The Flying Purple People Eater" by Sheb Wooley to make sure everyone stays scared. Then maybe "Who Do You Love", by Bo Diddley to make them Run! 🤐👹😆
@Dr. Marcus ...I suggested who do you love because of it's "Scary" content... "cobra snake for a necktie"..."brand new chimney built on top made out of human skulls". Trying to keep with the scary theme of Monster Mash. But I Love Bo Diddley and I'll listen to "Diddy Wah Diddy" too. It all brings back good memories. Thanks!
One of the most fun songs ever. This is my closest cousin's ringtone....lol. We used to play this 45 all the time when we were kids. He's imitating monster movie actor Boris Karloff's voice and then Bela Lugosi as Dracula voice.
Back from a time when musicians had a sense of humor and music could be serious or fun. Spike Jones, Ray Stevens, Napoleon XIV, Allen Sherman, Bobby Pickett, etc. Weird Al came along a bit later and did a great job of upholding the tradition of music putting a smile on your face. So much anger and profanity in the music today...it's actually quite sad.
Is it just me or did I just cotton on to the inspirational source for the entire Rocky Horror Picture Show? (Think: the serious, professorial type narrator and the dance/song "Let's Do the Time Warp Again", plus the whole idea of monsters and assorted weirdos rocking and partying....)
At the end of the song he says "Mash Good" a couple of times. That was a phrase my high school football team would repeat over and over during games and practices when someone would make a good hit on an opposing player.
There were many silly, goofy songs that made the top 40 back in the day. Try 'They're coming to take me away' by Napolian XIV. Even Bert from Sesme Street had a hit with 'Rubber Ducky'. Just the innocense of the times.
Ray Stevens, Spike Jones, Allen Sherman...to add a few more of which there were many. I'm a music major and have studied the music of the 50's and 60's quite extensively. No comparison to the angry stuff that is out today. It's really sad.
I remember dancing to this music and watching the Dick Clark show. This song is still a great addition to the Halloween parties. Really enjoyed the song and your reaction. I did the mashed potato dance to this song. Loved it, thank you 🎼🎶🦋🎵🎶

The Monster Mash was re-released in the USA on May 11, 1973 and reached #10 on August 11, 1973. The song also finished at #46 on NYC AM Radio station 77 WABC’s Top 100 of 1973.
Harri, that one remains a classic "Must" at Halloween parties since the early sixties. Great Karloff and Lugosi impressions. Since we're coming up on 31 Oct., there are a few Unholy Party hits you might react to, or play at your party - "Ghost of Stephen Foster" and "Hell" by Squirrel Nut Zippers, as well as "Dead Man's Party" by Oingo Boingo. Cheers!
Strange history with this one-came out in 1962 as a number one hit-then came back in 1973 and hit the top 20-US of course. Another Halloween song is bob McFadden's The Mummy-but the best eerie song that would be good for Halloween is the group Bloodrock with their top 40 hit D.O.A. Song has ambulance sounds and the end the tempo slows down in time to the deathbeat of the heart-vocally chilling.
Speaking Of Halloween,, THE GUESS WHO - "SHAKIN' ALL OVER" -SKELETON DANCE..A Classic Song Paired With A Disney "Silly Symphonies" Cartoon From 1929,, Yes,, I Said 1929..A MUST SEE!!
Bobby Pickett was put into a rather precarious position when doing this number on what was a live TV show. He had to try and give the impression that he was a, 'mad scientist', akin to Doctor Frankenstein, but without any kind of scenery, costume or make-up to make it obvious, all he could do was pull faces and hope for the best! It helps if you know the context of the song, but without that, it just looks like he's just, straight-up, pulling faces to a song. Great song, though. I always love the lyric, 'to get a jolt from my electrode.'
Also done on TV by The bonzo dog doo-dah band, Boris did a follow up Monsters Christmas. Worth looking at the various Bonzo Dog Band tracks on YT for a laugh.
React to John Belushi imitating Joe Cocker on Saturday Night Live also react to the Blues Brothers Soul Man the brothers are made up of John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd they did this as a skit on Saturday Night Live and it became a huge hit
Hey, You might like - and I'm sure it's been suggested - "The Girl is Mine," a duet with Michael Jackson & Paul McCartney & "Ebony & Ivory," another duet with Paul McCartney & Stevie Wonder. Also, Three Dog Night's "Mama Told Me (Not to Come)," "Black and White," "One," "Easy to be Hard," "Never Been to Spain," "Joy to the World," "Celebrate," "An Old Fashioned Love Song," "Liar" & "Out In the Country." Have a good one!
He sang the main part impersonating Boris Karloff (the original Frankenstein actor back in the 30's) then he impersonated Bella Lagosi (the original Dracula actor from the 30's) hope this cleared up any questions about the video
Hari, this isn't a Halloween song, but you have done Ray Stevens before, so I think you would like to react to Stevens' hit Ahab the Arab. Since this was released back in 1962, I think this was his first hit.
Punk covers of this make for a much better song but I won't lie his facial expression in this is solid for time. It may seem over the top and acward but it expresses the songs meaning well.

Bobby Pickett wrote this song in about 15 minuets, recorded it in around an hour and lived off it for the rest of his life...hats well and truly off.
Absolutely - wasn't he working as a cab driver or something like that at the time he wrote it?
@@alanmusicman3385 I know he was a session musician or something like that. Probably had to be a cabby to make ends meet.
He's mimicking Boris Karloff voice. Til this day the Monster Mash plays in all Halloween parties, events and even night clubs.
Not in ours. Too offensive to liberals. They don't like the word 'monster'. Unless it's used against Republicans.

There's about a 60 year difference from the time this song came out and the Dirty Dancing movie!

Hi Harri, Bobby Pickett was a singer, songwriter, actor & comedian. We loved this goofy song! 🤪 It was our Halloween favorite!
