If you are on well water you need a filter before the timer or you will get particles in the water that will cause the timer to stick open. For a few years, I did not use filters and had problems with the timers sticking and flooding the greenhouse ruining about 100 heirloom tomato plants. Kept taking the timers back to the store and had the same thing happen again. Finally, the employee asked me to describe my setup and that's when I was told the problem was I had no filter before the timer to catch particles. Upon installing the filter and cleaning it every once in a while you could instantly see particles trapped by the filter. Orbit sells the filters, the threads on it are pipe thread and you have to buy adapters for a hose or drip hose to go on it, I suggest buying from a local hardware store so that you can get the correct adapters. This filter may not be needed if you are on city water. Also I would highly suggest only using Duracell batteries and never reuse batteries from one season to another, put brand new batteries in at the start of the new season and recycle the old batteries.
