- WEEK 4 - Weekly GROCERY PRICES in Palm Springs, CA (1-123-2025)
It's the fourth week of 2025 and my total came to $74.21, shopping at Walmart in Palm Springs.
Please feel free to share your weekly grocery bills with me in the comments section.

Good morning from Key West Florida it's currently 61° down here. Our grocery store is Publix. We do have other stores here. And I've been told somewhere in Florida there's a Kroger.. there are the Cincinnati and they also own Ralphs.
To be honest with you I don't look at the food bill. I just picked out the things I'm wanting and pay for them.
At my age I don't deprive myself of anything. Have a good day out there in Palm Springs. I would imagine you have good weather as well?
We are like you, we are lucky enough to buy whatever we want and not have to worry about the price, but I still like to keep track of what things cost. Winter really never arrived here in Palm Springs this year, but we did get a little bit of rain and snow yesterday which was nice. But today it feels like a spring day once again lol. 😎👍
I love Publix! I have an application in to work there. GREAT store.
Thanks for reminding me that I need to mop my kitchen floor. Great to see you and Jim! 💓
Any time! 😆👍
My mother used to soak her dried prunes in rum or whisky, lots of rum and whisky!
😄👍
Interesting to see the prices where you live. I never go to Walmart because it tends to trigger panic. Always so crowded! Enjoy your videos! ❤
We shop early in the morning when they first open and we’re usually the only ones there and mostly have the entire store to ourselves. 😄👍
@seagate1686 The last time I was in a walmart supercenter, which has to be at least a year ago, I could not get out of there fast enough. It was a Sunday afternoon, and I literally felt like I was in one of those crazy silent movies where people and cars, only in this case, carts , are zig zagging and running frantically all over the place.
Me too!! I can't handle crowds!!!
@steveinpalmspringsca PS Walmart is a fairly low density store. Rarely more than a couple people ahead of you in line. Have you considered the Walmart app to order groceries and do the outdoor pick-up? I started doing it regularly before and after knee surgery. I find it really convenient. The app keeps track of what you purchase, so you can scroll through and add to your cart. Also find it keeps the impulse items to a minimum. Since you shop independently, you could do a video where one uses the app/pick-up option, and the other shops in-store.
😂😂😂 they have the same food as any other store, My Walmart is great, why would anyone panic, you should see a doctor for that.
Sooo pleased to hear that you use store brands except for those that you personally dont care for. Makes perfect sense and it's usually a decent savings. I was really shocked at your discovery that the store brand of brownies was the same as Duncan Hines. Not a good sign of things to come. Always remember...Buyer Beware!! It's to live by!! Don't get caught up in popular (especially super hero) stuff. Superman mac and cheese is identical to regular store brand. Gotta draw the line somewhere even with the grand kids!!! Waving Steve! Hi Jim!
😄👋
Hey Steve, I love your shopping videos. The thing I buy the most here is the store brand, always a good deal.
One thing I monitor closely, though, is shrinkflation, where they are changing the size of packaging to be more competitive. Another issue that not a lot of people are aware of is scrimpflation. Where companies change their ingredient quality to reduce the price but keep package size the same. This has been happening a lot with chocolate items because of the increase in cocoa prices globally they use lower cocoa flavor substitutes to beat prices.
Just a couple of things to watch for when shopping, and always remember to check the clearance rack.
I save hundreds per month, just shopping clearance.
Thanks for the heads up DS. This is the first time I’ve heard of skrimpflation! 😳😲😩
You guys need an Aldi. I can make it on $30/week. If I really splurge, $45. Avocados are between .65 and .90 depending on supply. I can get a large pork loin for $7, and it is enough for a week. Boxes of cereal are $2. Eggs ATM are $4, limit 2. Cake mix is a buck. Giant chocolate bar 1.50. Flour under $2. Bag of apples or oranges $3 ($1/pound). BTW, aldi prunes are awesome, soft and moist. $5 for a large carton. Also, you can get brownies from a regular cheap cake mix, just omit the water, but do add the two eggs and a half cup of oil. Add chocolate chips on a special occasion. Google recipes, you can make lots of stuff from those mixes. I don’t buy regular bread anymore, I just use aldi add water pancake mix and make pancakes for my PB sandwiches. I make waffles for deli sandwiches. The bread is fresh at making, and I don’t end up with a freezer burnt half loaf later.
OMG, where do you live? Our Aldi is across the street from Walmart, but in my experience, their prices are the same or higher. I guess every state and city is different.
Sometimes the store brands are actually more or the same as name brands. You gotta look.
I get store brands.
Ages ago, we bought store brand Frosted Flakes. They were horrible. Hard as a rock 🪨 and not really frosted. My mom refused to eat them. She told me to throw them away. That was weird for her. She grew up during the depression and never wanted to throw anything out, unless it had gone bad. She finally realized that one store brand box of Frosted Flakes wasn't going to bankrupt us 😂
Yeah, you really do take your chances sometimes with the Store brands. Most of the time we are lucky though with the store brand products we buy. I guess it’s crapshoot. 😩😂
We have been fortunate lately as one of my husband's friends has chickens, and he has been giving us more eggs than we can use. I share them with my sisters. Im not sure how long our free egg hauls will go on, though. Yesterday at Kroger, they were under 5.00 a dozen.
And for your dried out prunes , try stewing them in a little water. Just heat them and allow them to hang out until soft.
It pays to have friends with chickens these days lol! 😄👍
Some of the store brands Dollar Tree has the same item for 1.25 great video I’m like these shopping trips
😄👍
Hi Steve and Jim! I like the Great Value products as well. Thanks for sharing Steve! We always learn somenting new or interesting!
Thanks 😄👍
Years ago, my mom worked at Walmart and she told me that a lot of the store brands are just namebrand items with a generic label. I look at ingredients, a lot, especially when it comes to over-the-counter medication’s. I save a lot of money there. Love these weekly grocery vlogs.
😄👍
TY - expensive here in Oregon! It is because it is resort priced! Lots of recreational activities!😊
Each week it gets more costly. I haven't been yet. I'm going Friday. You both got me hooked on this little project. Thank you my friends 😊❤
Good luck on Friday Leesa! 🤞😄👍
I guess that lower grocery prices are not one of Trump's "Promises kept". Surprised?
Hi Steve and Jim! 😊 I buy store brand unless something I buy doesn't have a store brand. Great Value if I buy some things from Walmart and SE Grocers store brand when I shop at Winn Dixie.
😄👍
You guys are always entertained informative!
When you talked about the store brand prices catching up to the name brand, the phrase "What the market will bear" came to mind. I don't dispute that costs for all sorts of things have increased, but I also can't help but think that Walmart has figured out that people who want brownies (for example) will pay the price that they ask, even though the price has gone up. I noticed that the store brand was just a few cents less than the Brand-name brand; sure, that way Walmart can still claim "our price is lower!" And for people who count every penny (I had to do this when I experienced some poverty back in the day) well, they will reach for the brand that is those few pennies less. I was shocked at how much the price of grapes and avocadoes were; California produces both those and yet the prices seemed so high; and on par with here, which is hundreds and hundreds of miles away. Hmmmmm. What the market will bear..?
Exactly Ellecee! 😳😩
Yep, the prices sneak up behind ya and wooohaaa! 😮😅
Hi Steve...prices here for eggs are 4.00-.7.00 price range ...I don't buy them often ...pretty soon we will have to buy chickens and a roaster for eggs... 😂.. groceries have to come down eventually.. hopefully........have a great week...take care.... Deborah 🇨🇦
Lol 😂
Things are starting to go up more and more. You're right about the store brand getting close in price to name brand. 😊
😳🤔😩
Great video
I’m a bargain hunter. But lately it doesn’t work that good! 😅 Happy shopping if you can!! 🌞🌴🪴
It is definitely getting harder to find bargains. 😟
Trump will lower "groceries". He said so. He doing nothing about the bird flu in the same way he did nothing about COVID.
I try to get store brands when I can. A lot of times name brands are the same or almost the same as store brands, so I go with the name brands. Thanks for the interesting video. You and Jim take care.
I love your shopping vids. Kroger have 18 eggs this week for $3.99 using their digital coupon. Your Walmart prices are the same here in the Midwest. I really enjoy your videos. 😊
Thanks, glad you enjoy the videos JD and that is super cheap for eggs right now! Lucky you 😊👍
You did mention buying aspirin's previously. I enjoy watching y'all.
😄👍
Hi Steve! Sunkist orange essence flavor prunes are good! You should try them ! There good !! Great video!!
Thanks for the tip! 😄👍
I mostly buy the store brands but there's a few exceptions like tomato sauce and paste. For those I only buy Hunts. I've tried the off brands before but they always seem too sour or too sweet.
That is so funny that you mentioned that. I’m just like you. I only buy Hunts tomato sauce too. I don’t like the store brand at all. 😝😆
Walmart here inn Gettysburg is so expensive we never go there
I always thought Walmart was supposed to be the cheapest place to shop. Maybe that’s just here in California. Hopefully you have other places where you can still find bargains back there. 😄👍
That was Walmart's plan, to come into towns, put the little guys out of business with low prices, become a monopoly and then raise the prices. Walmart is disgusting in every way.
@@steveinpalmspringsca Regular grocery stores have sale ads. Walmart does not. You can save a lot by buying the sales and planning your menus accordingly.😁
We just went to Stater Bros. in Hemet last weekend and we spent $412, but we haven't been food shopping since before Christmas. We live in Idyllwild and try to go only once every 8 weeks or so. Organic eggs were $8.99 per dozen. Ouch! We have chickens, but they aren't laying right now. You don't even want to see what the prices at the grocery store up here are. There is an Aldi's over in Beaumont, but we don't seem to get down that way too often. The food for our dog, cat and greens for the chickens really runs our bill up. Cat food was .59 per can when our cat adopted us a couple years ago and overnight it went up to $1.29 per can, unless I can find it on sale. He is a big cat and he eats 2 cans per day. We buy 1 cow per year and that arrived yesterday so we don't have to buy any beef from the store. They raised their price quite a bit as well, but the butcher was just a little bit higher. These prices are killing us.
Yikes, thanks for sharing that with us. Sorry to hear that. 🙁
Try taking those dry prunes and cooking them with a little water and some of that agave you bought. Maybe that will improve them to the point where you can enjoy them and not have to throw them out.✌😁
Thanks for the tip Gary! 👍
Thanks for sharing, Steve and Jim, lately to many food recalls, listeria etc., Seems before Covid don't recall seeing that many, after covid it seems every day something is recall That high dollar brand of meats Boar's Head, same problem , Guess production workers never heard of Soap and water😊
Now that every industry is being deregulated and all oversight is being eliminated from the government that’s probably going to happen even more often in the future. 😩
Currently, the Trump administration has but a stop on the FDA's ability to put out the word on food recalls. Imagine that! The problem with the food recalls is that there are fewer and fewer factories processing foods. If one batch is found to be a problem, it's usually a large batch. Be wary of "BIG FOOD".
California grows most of fruits and veggies there but your prices are higher than our prices in Virginia and we grow very little locally.
One alarming issue over the past few days is that in California, some farms have reported that workers are not showing up for work and that produce is starting to rot in the fields. Now, I can't imagine why that may be?
Good video first thing I was thinking was do you ever look at weight of the package and ingredients? I usually buy 90% name brand Foods but there are a few I Will Buy store brand and some I thought of trying but haven't. Always nice to save money
Good video, Steve and Jim. Jim, quick question: After your heart procedure, did you have to change your diet? You seem to be in excellent shape with all the walking you do. Do you guys eat red meat? Do you drink beer or wine or another libation? Did your Doc tell you to 'do this' and 'not that'? Are there any foods that you and Jim despise?! HA! HA! Thanks. -Rich
Hi Rich, good questions. I think I've talked about and answered all of them in recent videos. Sorry you missed them. I'm sure I will be talking about all of them in future videos again though. I talk about what we eat and our diets in videos a lot. I don't think we despise any foods, but neither of us likes fish lol. :-)
@@steveinpalmspringsca Thanks, Steve. Sorry to be a nuisance. I missed your clips on that. It's ok.
Hi, in the rural KS town I live in, on 1/16/25 ~ I purchased 18 Eggland Best eggs for $4.49
Thought you'd find this interesting; enjoying your channel! Peace
Wow, that is really cheap! 😳😄👍
A view from the UK. Avocados here are £0.95 unripe to £1.30 ripe. ($1.20 to the £1)= $1.14 to $1.56.
Thanks for sharing with us Robert 😄👍
For most generic groceries they are as good as the name brand and made by the name brand often. It depends of course some things are a bummer but I have pretty good success with this.
6st hey steve & jim ...nice to see you...its been awhile, since before the election I think....... Ive Up'd my anti-depressant & the Weed Store DOwn the rd here in S.NJ knows me by name......its gonna be a Looooooong 4 yrs......Ugggggg.....Im Retired Gay cpl Married 15yrs together 25 , with no kids, a Boomer of 65 lives in a solid Blue state.. Mmmm them Prices sure went down riiiiiiight...( snark ) I do the Food shopping for the Two of us.......I get both store and name brand / depending ..... we're not on a "budget" so to speak....Plus Kev hates the store brand....
Hi Rex, welcome back. I posted a video every day in December and every day this month. More videos than I’ve ever posted since I started on RUclips. Sorry you missed them all. I hope you are doing OK now. 😄👍
A Dozen large eggs...7.52 here in Las Vegas...goes much higher will give up eggs😮
Love your channel and you. I don’t understand why you support a company that doesn’t support you. Walmart and Sam’s Club have decided that “Conservative Values” are more important than equality and human rights.
There are no corporations that support me. They all care about one thing. Money! Look at what Target recently did. Look at what Apple just did! And don't get me started on all the other grocery store monopolies in the country that are designed to raise prices artificially. In the end, it makes no difference what we buy or where we shop. We are all getting screwed by all the corporations and they laugh all the way to the bank knowing that they've pitted us all against each other and forcing us to take sides as either superior conservatives or superior liberals.
Great video Steve . Prices are very high here and getting help now with Marsha sending me a gift card 100 dollars and Uncle ED thinks he sent 200 but he s not sure but not counting on him . People here a lady gave a couple things and shopped and another lady here gave me a few things and going to food pantries but just signed up .I do not expect the 200 from Uncle Ed as Marsha said he forgot she is sure or if he has not already his daughter will not let him send me money to help me out and she is a miillion are and he says he is a billionare but Patrice is paying for his food and some things for him and they will not let him drive anymore .
Glad you are getting some help Patti 👍
Walmart is overpriced for their ultra processed food!! I hope we get a Sprouts out here. Oh yes and $8 eggs during November 2024 was Disgusting!! 🌺
Hi Steve, i sent your channel to a retired broadway star about sharing his story with you. hope to see his story on your channel if it works out.
Thanks Retired! :-)
@ how does he reach out to you ? just reply to one of your videos ?
How much are the cheapest dozen of eggs are you all finding in stores? 🥚
I forgot to look this week. I did share egg prices yeah last week’s video. I will try to remember to check again this week. I think they were up to about a dollar per egg. 😳🤪
@@steveinpalmspringsca Oh wow 😳 I think the cheapest dozen of eggs can be purchased for just under $4 at Walmart here.
I paid $2.63 (89 baht) for an avocado this week which is pretty normal. I asked why they were so expensive and the lady told me that they demand to fly over here in first class 🤣
Lol I’m surprised they haven’t started using that excuse they’ll start using over here! 🤪🤣
Can you pick me up some avocados? They’re about two dollars each here.
Avocados from Mexico are about to go up another 5% due to the tariffs from our new President.
😩
😄👍
@@steveinpalmspringscaJust announced 25% tariffs for Mexico and Canada starting this Saturday 2/1/25.
You're rude
?
i usually like your walking videos. These grocery shopping vids are so boring I cant watch the entire vid. We all shop, dont need your opinions on it.
Maybe I need to look more c!ose!y at the non-food items I buy. I seem to have about one week every two months when I can't even buy food. The entire shop is nothing but "household products". Perhaps I should eat more soap.
Lol 😂
