  • Walking the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route in northwestern Spain has surged in popularity, drawing nearly half a million pilgrims this year alone. However, as its fame grows, so do concerns about whether the Camino is becoming a victim of its own success. Has it now become overrated and overcrowded?
In this episode, we talk to Camino veterans Leigh Brennan and Johnny Walker, two expats living in Santiago de Compostela, on the latest Camino developments. Leigh hosts the popular Camino Cafe podcast. Johnny has written several Camino guidebooks and hosts the Camino All Routes Facebook site which has more than 438,000 followers.

Walked it in febr. 2012. It was fun meeting other hikers but I there are greater hikes and landscapes in europe to find yourself. It isnt amy more spiritualthan amy other hike.

Reino's comment about many recent pilgrims being in search of something spiritual and turning towards "New Age" alternatives rather than conventional Christianity rings very true. It is probably no surprise that the best-selling guide to the Camino Frances was written by a man whose own spiritual base was within the eclectic mysticism of Findhorn and similar communities rather than a mainstream Christian church.

If you have done the Camino once or twice. Stay home. Give other people a chance to experience it too.

Better still, walk the less popular routes.

Last year I walked the Frances from SJPDP in April. 6 of us slept on park benches in Pamplona and had to use the loo in the police station. 😂Not funny at the time. No accommodation between Zubriri and Pamplona. There were people put up on a gymnasium floor.

That section can get particularly busy. April used to be quiet on the Frances but these days its better to book ahead on the popular sections.

Just go during the winter instead of summer and you will be fine.

Not losing its magic IMO, but rather becoming more popular with time.
If you want the solitude, help make Del Norte more popular, or alternatively, walk The Camino Arragones 😊

Love the video, but I think it's okay to do the last 100 WITH the new pilgrims! I think it can help us remember what the Camino is really all about to be there and share our perspective with these new arrivals! Love being a part of being an ambassador-support // serving the Camino!

I walked the Camino Portuguese several times, I love the company of other pilgrims and the money it brings in to the country is needed for the local economy.

Indeed many local towns and villages very much dependent on income from passing pilgrims.

Thank you for doing this video. I needed to hear this. I'm elderly and doing my first Camino alone from Tui, the Portuguese Way in early December. No idea what to expect.but looking forward to the Camino. 🙏🏼 💕

I walked the Camino for the 6th time this august frol st jean to Santiago de compestello. It was by far the quietest I've ever seen it in the 6 years I've hiked it. And the weather wasn't overly hot either

Thank you Reino, Lee and John for such an insightful video into the life of the Camino. I've walked the Francés, the Muxía, Fisterre, Santiago circuit a couple of times and two years ago attempted de Mozárabe from Málaga but had to ende early in Mérida due to exhaustion. Opposed to say the Francés, in the Mozárabe you do not feel the espiritual conexion you, as a pilgrim, seek. Local folks are not nearly as accommodating as those in the most popular Caminos. It was hard, it was lonely (I hardly met other pilgrims in 500 Km), badly signed but, still, I'd do it again if I had the chance.
