    You can be a Tarantino fan and still acknowledge that he made a mockery of Bruce Lee in the film. In an era where 40 years later we STILL barely have respectable major roles for Asians in Hollywood films. (And if you reference the small handful of films with Asian actors from the last 40 years you're only proving my point).

    • @djstrongarmgmail
      @djstrongarmgmail 4 года назад

      "Mockery" the only mockery he made, was that of all the countless, starry-eyed fans, that think of Lee as a god, and not just a man. Small men get pummeled by bigger men, if they both have fighting experience. That's just reality. The only people that have issue with seeing Bruce get tossed like a rag doll, are people who a. Don't know or understand history/reality, and b. Think Lee was some immortal god. I'm extremely happy people like yourself got a wake up call.

    Thank you, Jason, for pointing this out. The lack of a defined heroic archetype in Kill Bill is something that hadn't occurred to me before, and as for putting Uma Thurman in a yellow tracksuit and having people go "See, Quentin LOVES Bruce Lee"? That's like having a character who's dressed in a rhinestone jumpsuit and going "See, Quentin LOVES Elvis." What Quentin loves is the surface aspects of martial arts films, hence the swaggering, arrogant asshole in sunglasses who talks like a foulmouthed Confucius, claims he's the toughest guy in the room, then throws down with the first person who questions him. No depth, no subtlety, no empathy developed for a character who was featured so prominently in the trailers-nor was there meant to be. Because Quentin wasn't homaging Bruce; he was homaging all the cringey-ass imitators that came from milking the corpse of the dude who literally made the industry. Once Upon a Time was a tribute to BRUCEPLOITATION, and for the man who, to this day, is perhaps THE symbol of Asian pride? He deserved a helluva lot better.

    Tarantino is proof of Hollywood continuing making films that portrays the Asian man as being weak. He created a make believe character a " John Wayne " type that ultimately puts the Chinese man in his place! Tarantino tries to justify the reason this guy can beat Bruce is because he was a ex green barret and killed people with his bare hands in the jungle, that's why he can destroy Bruce and real life someone like that can kill him. Well for myself, I've been in situations where I had to defend myself unprovoked, simply because of my race. Every time I was put in those situations I felt my life is in danger and can loose my life if I hesitate and not go "ALL OUT!" I'm definitely no where close to the skill level as the great Bruce Lee. My skill level in comparison to Bruce is me being a single grain of sand in a sand box. That being said do you think Bruce care of a person's background? I am certain he would respond the same for anyone that tries to harm him. I love Jason Tobin but I really disagree with him on playing that part in Tarantino's movie. Jason said he didn't like that scene but he would've taken that part if offered to him. I have a problem with that. If you were a true Bruce Lee fan and actor that portrayed him like that in the movie, then you go up to Bruce (if he was still living) and say I'm a huge fan, you think Bruce would be pleased?Tarantino said it was a fact that Bruce did not respect "American" stuntmen. Just imagine to "some" people at that time, thinking who's this little Chinese guy telling us how to and show us a better way? I bet this is what Bruce face regularly. Well anyways, it has been written on one account where Bruce was asked by a producer to show these two stuntmen some things. These guys were big linebacker type. They smirked and sized up Bruce. Bruce had one of them hold the pad. Bruce kicked it so hard that the stuntman flew into the swimming pool. The stuntman couldn't believe it! Now the second guy's turn, he was better prepared and really braced himself. Same outcome, it was said that they became believers and wanted Bruce to teach them some things.

    Tarantino just hates Bruce and everything he stood for. Period. Ironic, since he created a fictional, wish fulfillment white character that can beat him. Cliff is not real, nor could he be real. However, Bruce was everything people who knew him very well, without bias or jealousy said (looking at you, Gene) and so much more.

    If Quentin Tarrentino is truly a Bruce Lee fan he should've done extensive research and the one person he should've gone to was Dan Inosanto. Inosanto was a close, personal and the senior student of Jeet Kun Do. When Inosanto talk's about Bruce Lee you can see how much history, wisdom he shares about his friend. Same goes to Taky Kimura who another of Lee's students, close friend who new Lee professional and personally. Tarrentino say's he is a fan but he completely dishonored Bruce Lee in this elseworld storyline. I have nothing against Mike Moh. Mike Moh was great as Bruce Lee, but I feel sorry that he had to work with a terrible script.

      Jason Tobin wasn’t talking about that archetype. He was talking about the archetype of the hero (the ones played by Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, and Jet Li). In Hollywood movies, many of the Asian actors in martial arts movies are relegated to playing characters such as Mr. Miyagi and Pai Mei, characters who aren’t the heroes but characters that the audience often poke fun at. The Bruce Lee character in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was relegated to that sort of character who gets mocked even though Bruce Lee is one of the most iconic heroes in cinematic history.

    Stuntman/martial artist Gene LeBell went toe to toe with Bruce on the set of The Green Hornet in 1966. The confrontation ended with LeBell picking Lee up and parading him around the set on his shoulders. Bruce could've been humiliated, but he was actually grateful because LeBell exposed a major flaw in Jeet Kune Do: the lack of grappling. The two men became friends and LeBell taught Lee some grappling techniques to incorporate into his martial art. This is what great athletes do. They WANT to discover weaknesses so they can shore them up. I get fans and family wanting to protect Bruce Lee's legacy, but Tarantino is only guilty of creating a mild fiction about something that actually happened.

Bruce Lee was a prop character to show what a badass Cliff Booth is, so the final scene with the Manson clan made sense. You say that, but there's still the *way* Bruce has portrayed to act, and the statements he made about beating Muhammad Ali that Tarrantino claims he said...yet Bruce never really said. Brad Pitt, the choreographer, and Mike Moh who played Bruce were all uneasy with the scene and went on record as saying that. Why would that be? I understand your point about using Bruce as a "prop character", but you could've had Cliff beat up a band of random thugs and muggers, get into a barfight with a fictional heavyweight boxer...the possibilities are endless, it's movie making. It's uncomfortable when you use probably the biggest Asian-American icon of all time as a punching bag, especially when Bruce faced so much real life racism in the industry. Imagine if a movie had a middle aged white man like Pitt beating up Muhammad Ali to bolster his character, or beating Michael Jordan in a game of basketball. Dalton is an alcoholic, completely out of step with the times, and is lampooned by nearly every one in the industry that he works with, which is made clear by the assessment of his career made by Al Pacino's character. It isn't even making fun. It's a story taken straight out of Bruce's life, but fictionalized and made to fit the overall story perfectly. Bruce was JUST A MAN. He had a beautiful vision, and was a harder worker than most will ever know. He was also an arrogant egotist, and almost got shot by letting his dark side cloud his life choices, involving his friends and students. He was the very best of both worlds. Positive and negative. Total straw-man arguments coming from Asians (who get offended and react when they feel any other Asian is being attacked) and seriously ill informed fans of Bruce Lee. BRUCE WAS JUST A MAN. And all people have an ego and a temper. I admire Bruce like no other man: he was a great philosopher, an amazing researcher, and trained harder and had a higher fight IQ than most people of his day. He also was a harsh father, incredibly arrogant and hot headed, and even made some morally questionable choices involving his students and friends, and almost got shot in the face for it,...all over his ego. Does this negate his impact on society and beautifully bridging two prosperous cultures? Maybe, maybe not. Regardless, he was JUST A MAN. I LOVED his depiction in "Once upon a time" it made him HUMAN. And brought up the reality of fighting: "there is ALWAYS someone stronger/better." There were and are numerous fighters that could have, and would seriously hurt Bruce. Anyone who understands Bruce as a man and not a deified, cultural icon, had no issue with seeing a tall, brawny Cliff Booth toss a short little missile, into the side of a car. That's how real fights go down. Nit like some amazingly choreographed Kung Fu fight scene from a movie. I honestly think what Tarrantino did was one of the bigger shows of respect done to Lee's memory and lasting legacy. One that even his daughter and supposed "fans" have tried to spin and fictionalize...Lee was not a god...he was just a man.

      So guy who lean on falsehood and depicts a character wrongly is not creepy but if someone who speaks out the truth is creepy. Quite a tortured logic

      Phoenix J It’s a fictional character in a fictional universe you’re dumb ass. It’s not the real Bruce Lee if you haven’t noticed.It’s people like you that are ruining everything

    Bruce Lee was a performer, not a fighter. There's almost no record of him ever participating in matches. His image was greatly exaggerated to sell movies. People are scared of the truth so they freak out when you bring up facts.

      @@EthnHayabusa if you know so much, please detail how Bruce almost got shot in the head for allowing his ego and dark side to ruin his dearest friendship and end the gym in Seattle? I'll wait...
      Oh, and if your answer is "that never happened" then you've lost before you started. Now who "doesn't know enough."

      It's sad, pathetic little fan boys/girls who don't understand the difference between reality and FICTIONAL CHARACTERS. Was he a bad ass? Yes. Could he have beaten most KNOWN fighters at that time. Absolutely. But, what these delusional fans don't understand is, there are people who are almost at super hero levels out there. People that NEVER show who they are or show off in any public fights. Scary...scary...people. They bought the ticket, took the ride and never bothered to question anything. I'm personally ecstatic seeing Bruce brought down a few pegs. I think BRUCE would be happy about it, too. He never wanted people to deify him. He just wanted to share what he knew....as a man.

      @@djstrongarmgmail There is absolutely no evidence to back ur statement as there is no valid source for ur information. Bruce Lee is not an athlete MMA peeps. He is a real fighter. He's been a fighter from his childhood ,he defeated Wong jack man in real fight ,we also have proof that Bruce defeated a grandmaster in 11 seconds. I debunked ur statement.
