Hehe yes!! Thank you for joining me here!! I think there are more adult hamster youtubers than one might guess, but I do feel like it was something I was looking for when I first got a hamster. Hamsters are a great working person’s pet!
i can't wait for our charity / thrift stores to open up again ...still closed as only essential shops open here in the uk at the moment due to our national lockdown .i have bought many items from these stores such as ceramic items to use as hides and some really cute dishes for food / veg .hopping hammy did a couple cute videos on thrift store buys for hamsters .
Oh really? I should go check that out! Wow all stores still shut down? It’s so interesting how the world is dealing with this so differently! And I’m in California where the laws are most strict... I hope it improves for you soon! I was hoping for some food bowls but everything was too deep or large I felt... I definitely plan some repeat trips!
@@RachelGotHamsters thanks .we are also supposed to stay within 5 miles of our homes if possible .face masks in shops are required too .will be glad when things start to get back near normal .
Hmm, yes I am trying to figure this out also! I have two robos, one is super sweet and never bites (Steven) the other is more aggressive and definitely will bite (Sofia). Both are about 8 months old. We keep leather gloves by her cage and practice handling her with gloves on as much as possible. I do think it’s gotten better, but her instinct is to run at anything in her cage to attack. I created a separate play bin space for both my robos, also thinking maybe she’ll be less aggressive in this space since it isn’t her home. This does kind of help, although, since she’s a robo she’s also just kind of skiddish, so I don’t really get to handle her in the play bin. I mostly just let her enjoy exploring. I don’t know that I’ll ever get Sofia not to bite, but i believe the biting is partly related to fear, so i think the more she has a stable environment (not too many cage rearranging, no total cage cleans) and a happy life with enrichment, I do feel we can make some Progress! The latest thing is she now, sometimes, let’s us pet her and seems to enjoy it! (Before we could only pet if she was eating, but now sometimes even if she’s not). I think working with the gloves like you have been is great. I think you can also try other objects, like letting her crawl into a cup you’re holding (Sofia loves to do this, and I’ll take her to another spot in her cage) or using a big soup ladle, Sofia also enjoys hopping in and going on gentle rides around her cage. Maybe figure out if there’s something your ham likes that you can do with them (maybe even just seeds in your leather glove) to keep them associating you with safe & happy times. But most of all, be patient. It’s so hard I know, but you will find that time + daily practice will go a long way after a few months! I’m only 6/7 months into having robos and they still are blossoming in their personalities and bond wirh us. I think it’s just a long road! I hope this helps!
It takes a long time… months! Just keep working, have patience. Practice just sitting next to their cage and talking to them while they are at. Then feed them treats from your hands. See if you can gently pet them while they eat. Set up a safe play area in a bin or playpen and bring your hamster out to explore it for a few minutes each night. Keep doing this, and you’ll make progress!
@@possiblehamsterlover after you have hamsters a while, there are ways to kind of tell- early on they look fluffier with more shiny, baby fur, then at about a year, they look full, with a full coat that’s slightly duller and they’ll probably have a more relaxed personality, and then in older age you’ll see some changes, fur sometimes changes color around their face like on dogs, indicating an elderly hamster, also in their behavior. There is no definite way to know, but there are signs you get used to once you’ve had enough hamsters. Did you just get a hamster?
@@RachelGotHamsters I got him from pets mart,I’m not sure if they could give us some clues or anything like that.but I have been watching over him,if it helps u at all he looks similar to the hamster in ur banner for youtube

That’s such a good idea! I get a lot of my guinea pig supplies from thrift stores!
Nice! What kind of things work for GP at the thrift store?
@@RachelGotHamsters mostly I just get my towels from there! It works well as an absorbent layer under their fleece.
