Yep it take you back to being a child sitting in your homemade camp with your mates, all drinking from a bottle of Tizer and eating pies from the pie shop.....I still remember those floating bit's in the bottle.
It's good to see an old traditional Pie Shop still on the go and still producing quality products. In my home town all the memorable food shops from my early years are gone, Fish & Chip Shops that served Hot Chips and Fish with Crispy Batter we had a Pork Butcher that did Pork Pies and Sandwiches to die for plus many more. All these are Gone replaced by the culinary equivalent of Junk Shops or if you blink another over priced coffee shop appears, Progress 😲
Great video Gareth, you are bang on the money about local pie shops and farm pies. I lived in the land of the pie eater (Australia) for 15 years and they do some great pies, but none better that a pie floater from Harry's cafe de Wheels in Woolloomooloo, Sydney. Pie upside down in mushy peas with a big splodge of ketchup. Heaven after a night on the Toohey's New
Now you're talking Gareth! I don't know of this pie shop but honestly what could be better than an independent traditional business. You can tell how good it must be from its location to start with! Those pies aren't pukka, they're proper!! Flipping delicious, I can nearly taste them. And what a reasonable price, given what's happening with inflation at the moment. Excelllent video!
The jelly in a pork pie is the best bit - every little space should be full of either meat or jelly in my opinion. When I lived down south the chef in a local pub used to save it for me when he cooked the pork joints on a sunday - heaven! That meat and potato is the first one I've seen that actually follows the rules - major ingredient named first. Most of them it should be gravy potato and meat. That one looked like a first class meal!
Pork Pie jelly can be great (pigs trotter based) or Good (quality stock / gelatine based). The latter really easy. Look it up and fill your boots (OR belly)
I think our butcher/baker's pies ae great but they are all £3 each - yours look fabulous and WHAT a bargain. I wish you would show the interiors of the shops - they need promoting too - just like you here. I think the shops would love it 🙂 More of these local videos please 🙂
Totally agree with you that a pie from a pie shop is so much better than the stuff the supermarkets sell, love the hand made look of them too. They both looked amazing!
Gareth you certainly were " having a moment " , but absolutely justified and rightly so👏👏 because for value , freshness , taste and no list of nasties added , and supporting local business , that's a great , honest and proper review , and you bring your own unique style to them .
Thing is compared to factory pies , the thing is it’s full, there’s no space for empty air , that’s a pie I wouldn’t regret buying, jog on Holland’s, fill your pies, like you used to😊
I am from the north of England. From Bolton, but have lived in the Midlands for the past 40 years. Believe me the northerners are master pie makers. They haven't got a clue here. God I miss those meat and potato pies. Great video mate. Take care. 👍
I can attest to the quality of the pies at Greens. I am so lucky living 30 seconds away and have eaten them for most of my life. Always a treat and never taken for granted. These have the accolade for being the top rated pie in the country (and therefore the world?) in a book reviewing the national pie. Very lucky for Barrow and something the rest of the world can never appreciate. Well done for giving our much disrespected town an accolade and appreciation.
Nice one Gaz. Those pies look brilliant. Plus the prices arent even expensive if you think about what you're getting. You know yourself supermarkets can charge more than what you paid for a pie you then have to cook in the oven. You need to do a series on local produce to champion it as you have done here. Even if people aren't going to be able to visit the places you do at least it will push them to looking at local independent businesses.
Gareth I love these videos, that pie looked amazing,I don’t like pork pies, but that meat and potato pie was a bargain and well put together,Thank you for another great video❤
That looks an excellent pie 😃 it’s full of filling and the pastry is of a decent thickness defo worth the money, I was salivating while you were tucking into that lovely pie
I’m so jealous. We don’t have pie shops over here in Ireland. Never did as far as I know. They both looked delicious. And the price? Wow! Great job buddy 👍🇮🇪
Love your video's, like that you are a humble man and very respectful. Genuine and honest! Your not your standard typical youtuber, you are very genuine..brilliant!!
Our local butcher's does great pies, too and the bacon rashers come from a nearby village farm. No white residue seeps from them as you grill or fry, just the proper fat which is so tasty, we drain it off and use it for Roast potatoes. Beautiful! XXX ❤
Gareth, you’ve managed to make me feel hungry and envious yet again. That meat and potato pie looks amazing, I haven’t seen a pie with actual pieces of potato in it in ages. Most pies tend to being made from minced meat and the water used to boil the potatoes to destruction, with a bit of gravy granules added for the colour. As for the pork pie not having enough jelly in it for your liking, unless the pie is allowed to cool all the way down to room temperature before adding the jelly at body temperature, then it will always leave an air space because the liquid jelly soaks into the pastry. The best way is to add the jelly in two or more stages allowing the jelly to set in the bottom half of the pie and support the the rest of the jelly as a second stage pour. If the pie needs to be served hot or at least warm then it will never be as full of jelly as you would like it to be.
@JulieChave46 In what area of the world do you reside. Only asking because I want to ensure that I never visit the area to either shop for, or to dine on any kind of savoury pie.
Had Eric the barber in our Village he was there over 50 years and remember the child seat he used to put across the barbers chair.Proper old fashioned barbers not these poof palaces that are about these days...lovely pies, you made me hungry again now Gareth.
That meat and potato pie does look great. As for the greasy bags I remember them too. Miss them sort of pies. Another quality video. I might have to try that shop when I go on a ride out on my motorbike.
They look cracking pies Gaz. I can't eat any Greggs pastry as it gives me terrible heartburn but when Ann had her pie shop in Sunderland she used the cheapest flour but they never gave me any trouble at all.
Gareth, your videos are 'spot on'! I really needed cheering up today and this one cheered me up no end. I did laugh at the pie-eyed joke and even more when you laughed at it yourself! Just what I needed. I like these ones you do in the car. Those pies looked fantastic. Hope they were as delicious as they looked. I walked in to my local once, and a bloke says "Blimey it's a Hairy Biker!" I do resemble Dave Myers!!
I am enjoying watching your 'moment' hahaha. Great to see you eating the well made local ware. Surely quality and taste + 'a moment' = value for hard earned money.🙂
Love your videos 📹 your down to earth and say it how it is I love it. But this video says it all you can't say no more brilliant I feel you lol. Green's here we come one day lol 👍👌✔💥
Oh My now that is a real potato and meat pie reminds me of a bakers in Blackburn long gone called Kenyon's he was a real master-baker ....LoL.............Great video so missing the North.................🤠
Hi Gareth, I do love a yummy pie, when I was a kid in the 60's we would have pie day once a week. A Four n Twenty Pie was .17 cents and the Five N Twenty drink was .02 cent. The tomatoe sauce was free. Those were the days. Cheers Debra xxx
Thanks for the drive around, love seeing your area. Thanks for asking for a steak and kidney pie, told you they are very popular. Our local pies are $7, or 3.66 pounds so you got off cheap.
Hi Gareth. Thanks for doing a review on Greens pies. As I said in your last video on pie's never tried them. I'm in Barrow in a couple of weeks to visit our friend's over from Australia who used to live in Green Gate Street. So I'm definitely going to call at Green's to get a few of them tasty looking pie's the pork one really looks nice. I'm with you like a jelly round the meat but will give them a go thanks for sharing 👍
Oh yesss they looked superb!!!! What a bargain. There is a market by where I live every Friday and a stall that does homemade pies 🥧 there pork and stuffing one is amazing. I love a proper pie…… Smithy
That meat and tater pie looks amazing, I want one, we don't have a pie shop like that in Cornwall. I lived in the North and we had some brilliant pie shops, specially in Wigan. That Pork pie is looking delicious too. Wish I was next to that pie shop, I'd be in there. and two quid! Can't beat it.
They look amazing Gaz - And very reasonably priced too. Regarding pork pies, you can't beat one from a butcher or baker, especially if it's still warm - supermarket ones are utter carp in comparison. Hope you had your Rennie's at the ready after quaffing those.
Oh mate, what fantastic looking pies. Full of meat and potato mmmmm, and that pork pie looked so good. Agree with you about the jelly content but i could snaffle them down all day. Thanks for sharing and enjoy your time ;))
Haha it's a good pie shop to be fair and thats cheaper than those in town. Great price that. Yum. Few years since I had. Greens. Really craving one now 😁
Now those are proper looking pies. If they were sold out of Steak and Kidney? That's a good sign from the off. I would bet that after you stopped filming? You scoffed both pies 🥰🥰. I totally agree about supporting your local pie shops, especially if they knock out pies of this quality. We could do much more to support family run businesses, whether they are pie shops, fishmongers, butchers, chippies and others. If we don't, then we start to lose the traditional ways of producing quality food. Look at Cornwall for instance. Nearly every village and township has a traditional pasty shop . It doesn't matter if your local or an emmet, (holiday maker not from Cornwall), everyone loves a pasty. So the tradition lives on. You won't find many Gingsters pasties down there being eaten. Another great review Mr G 👍👍. That meat and potato pie looked amazing and made me very jealous.
I was born and lived most of my life in Barrow, and Greens meat and potato were to die for! I have lived in Spain for the last 11 years, and when any Barrovians come to visit me, I insist on them bring a dozen Greens M & P. Not had one for about 4 years now. Your review is giving me hunger pains!!
I can't comment on "Northern pies" of course but the best ones here around Gloucestershire area or anywhere in the West Country are the ones from farm shops or farmers' markets. Beat the supermarket ones hands down. I will eat a small pork pie but discard the jelly as can't stand wibbly wobbly food but appreciate it needs to be there as it adds flavour.
They both looked phenomenal. I make my own pies and I just can't see how they can sell them for £1.90/£2 as I know the effort that goes into making them that tasty - just the cost of the ingredients alone let alone the overheads of cooking it, selling it etc.. Sort of wish I lived closer!!!!! Can't help but reiterate Gareth's comments - please buy local otherwise you might not be able to but local - and £2 is so cheap compared to the £5 from the supermarket which will no way be as good!
When you reach a certain age and you can find your own personal heaven by just sitting in your car eating a couple of pies. Bravo Sir!
Haha yes, you're right mate 👍
Yep it take you back to being a child sitting in your homemade camp with your mates, all drinking from a bottle of Tizer and eating pies from the pie shop.....I still remember those floating bit's in the bottle.
nothing makes me happier!
It's the little things in life that make it all worthwhile!
I do the same, I get up early and out before 8am. I sit the whole morning in the car before starting work at 1pm. I only sleep at home.
It's good to see an old traditional Pie Shop still on the go and still producing quality products. You're living your best life, sir. Watching you eat that pie is making my gums ache and now I'm drowning in my own saliva.

That's a good beer. It was my favourite when I was in Oz.
Those pies look amazing Gareth 👍 Gregg's skinny flat pasties with no filling they can keep them l'd buy these all day long
Who doesn't love a good pie? Wish I had a pie shop like that near me, I'd be 5 stone heavier! 😁
Mrs Miggins Pie Shop is my favourite 😋
They do look very nice and I would definitely have some of them if I lived near!! Great review cheers and stay well.
Thanks, you too!
Thanks for another great review. Pies look fantastic. Wish I lived closer.. my home Kendal, is 35 miles from Barrow. Good value at 2 Quid.
You're welcome
Spot on Gaz… you can’t beat a local pie shop… they are made with Love… not like the massed produced pies .. thank Gaz 👍👍
Very true cheers
This is not fair! I'm on the slimming world diet & those pies looks bloody lovely & I can't have one 😥
That meat and potato looks absolutely gorgeous. Man! I'm salivating here!
Absolutely incredible. Real pies at a decent price. Nice review 👍
Thank you

WOW! I've never had anything like them kind of pies and they look so good.👍
Those pies look delicious! You're making me hungry!
Nothing like supporting a local business. If I lived there, I would definitely buy, support them!
Cheers mate
Well said about supporting local concerns . Bet the bikers could make a few of those disappear. Hope Dave is on road to recovery .
Yes hope so mate. He's moved away now.
Yes, me too. I am a cancer survivor from 2015!
@@ellemetcalf110 well done keep safe .
Totally agree with you that a pie from a pie shop is so much better than the stuff the supermarkets sell, love the hand made look of them too. They both looked amazing!

I absolutely love the bikers I was privileged to spend a whole day with them my hero’s . Never miss them if they come local to me xxxx
Brilliant thanks 😊

"No space for empty air". Aside from being nonsense, nothing on this planet can ever be truly empty, even a gap inside a pie.
I am from the north of England. From Bolton, but have lived in the Midlands for the past 40 years. Believe me the northerners are master pie makers. They haven't got a clue here. God I miss those meat and potato pies. Great video mate. Take care. 👍

There is just something about a quality pie. I’ve just eaten, but this makes me want one!! Looks great that! 😋😋😋
So good!

These are the best pies ever, I go there for a pie now and again as I live near this pie shop.

We used to have a local bakery like that. They had a small hole in the top and they used to ask if you wanted gravy with it
Oh lovely yum 😋
Looked like a lovely place and on a beautiful day. Great food too, what more can you wish for? Hungry now and I've had me tea!
Glad you enjoyed it
I am finding it harder to find a GOOD pie anywhere local around me. Nothing can beat the simple pleasures of a top-quality pie.
Yes was very good 👍
They look amazing Gaz - And very reasonably priced too.

Yes very true indeed. Food joy with this one. 😋

Oh yes!
Jeez Gareth, I’m gonna have to move back up north, our butcher in Surrey makes a pork pie, same size but it’s £5!!!!
Those pies looked amazing.

Those pies look amazing and just warm mmmmm😊
The pies look great. Bit of a way to go for me though as I'm down on the south coast lol. Next time I'm up that way though I'll give them a try!
Now those are some properly filled pies!
I like my pork pies with little or no jelly. The crust crispy and brown. Our local chicken barbecue is my favourite.
Thank you
I could see coming back to your old stomping grounds brought emotions out. Does me the same way.
A damn fine looking couple of pies - 👍👍👍
So good
