Fun Fact: While Billie Joe Armstrong writes the vast majority of Green Day's music on his own, there's two songs on here that are written (and sung) by other members of the band! In Homecoming, the bassist Mike Dirnt and drummer Tre Cool wrote and sung their own sections "Nobody Likes You" and "Rock n' Roll Girlfriend" respectively. Mike Dirnt also wrote and sang "Governator"

Whenever you have bands where all the members compose AND they get along, it works wonders as you can see by this band. Thank you so much for telling me that! It makes me appreciate them much more now! And also, thank you for your support! It means so much to me. Much love 😁🫶
@@nachobusinezzreacts warning is my favorite album of all time, it’s really necessary to have lyrics up for it though. I could write paragraph after paragraph about it so I’ll spare you, but the closer “Macy’s Day Parade” was a song my dad chose for his funeral so *obviously* it means a lot to me and my family
@@nachobusinezzreacts Warning is a very, (if not, their most) underrated album. I still listen to it front to back weekly - has amazing songwriting, lyrics and melody to it. After hearing Warning you'll start to realize how diverse Green Day actually is
This album does tell a story that is very in depth. I'll try my best to describe it as simply as possible. Basically our main character names himself the Jesus of Suburbia. He's basically just a normal suburban dude who wants a break from the same old boring life. The song holiday is about him breaking free from Suburbia, quickly followed by Boulevard where he becomes depressed. Are we the waiting is about him waiting for something crazy to happen. The song is abruptly cut off by St. Jimmy. St. Jimmy is the alter-ego of the Jesus of Suburbia, who parties and goes crazy all the time. In the song she's a rebel, we are introduced to our next character Whatsername. She's the main love interest, and letterbomb is her letter to St. Jimmy, basically dumping him. Wake me up when September Ends is unrelated to the album, but is about the lead singers dad who died when he was very young. Homecoming is about The Jesus of Suburbia killing off the St. Jimmy part of him, and going back to his Suburban life, then the song whatsername is him looking back on his adventures through the album. I think that's mostly correct hopefully. The album following this one is another rock opera like this one called 21st Century Breakdown which is my favorite album of all time besides The Black Parade, I would highly recommend it.
Hello, very good reaction, you should react to the concept album "Queen of the murder scene" it is from the band "The Warning" they are three sisters from Mexico and I hope you like it, greetings
WHAT?! A MUSICAL?! Oh dude you already know I am about to watch that! Thank you so much for letting me know! Kinda crazy they made a musical out of this lol… Thank you for your support😄💪
Next should be the follow up album 21st Century Breakdown.. and also music video for Wake Me Up When September Ends 🤘 Of course, another great album reaction after MCR 😉
Man you need to do a reaction to 21st century breakdown now. The album came out after this one and its also a concept album. It rocks and maybe even better than american idiot
This is the reason why some of the songs in the album American Idiot are combined in the digital/deluxe edition (Holiday/Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Are We The Waiting?/St. Jimmy, Give Me Novacaine/She's A Rebel, Extraordinary Girl/Letterbomb) is that they transition
So with regards to the titles? (Such as 'Homecoming')? This is a concept album - it follows the story of the 'Jesus of Suburbia' who considers himself the 'son of rage and love' He's basically disaffected American working class youth. The whole album charts his coming of age. He leaves his home in the suburbs to make his own way in the city His angry, spiteful side is 'Saint Jimmy' - a character he either meets or becomes (it's not entirely clear) in the city In Give me Novacaine & she's a rebel he's turning to substance abuse and hedonism for an outlet By Letterbomb we see him start to realise his absolutist ideologies maybe aren't all they're cracked up to be In Homecoming we see him kill off the 'st. Jimmy' alter-ego and return to the suburbs and more rounded and mature person - even if not necessarily a happier one. As for a girl? Whatsername is the love interest - the girl in 'shes a rebel', 'Extrodinary Girl' & 'Whatsername' is the same girl. She's called 'Whatsername' as a comment on the transience of adolescent emotions. She was so, so important but when it was all over? When Jimmy 'dies' and the Jesus of Suburbia returns home? He can't even remember her name. I'd recommend checking out Polyphonics RUclips video on the record. He does a really good walkthrough of the album narrative. Also you now need to check out other green day albums. 'Dookie' is not as conceptual but is a brilliant straight-up pop-punk album. '21st Century Breakdown' felt like a poor imitation of 'American Idiot' to me when it came out . . . But in retrospect it absolutely holds its own as an equally bold and well crafted concept album. The two characters in '21st Century Breakdown' being Christian & Gloria.
You were right in saying that the entire Album is telling a story. Each song feeds into another which Wake me Up When September Ends being the only out of place song in the story. American Idiot introduces the setting, Jesus of Suburbia introduces the character named well... Jesus of Suburbia. Its his journey through drink, drugs, relationship with Whatshername and struggles with St Jimmy. With the album ending with Whatshername as he thinks back on the times he had.
I think that a review of an earlier album, for example, Kerplunk or Dookie would be pretty interesting. Its fun to find all of the similarities and differences between their sound then and now.
Something I noticed: You should probably pull up the lyrics while reacting to songs, just in general. Not to constantly read along or anything, but just bc you keep asking "Did he just sing what I think he sung?" and half the time, the singer actually _didn't_ sing that, but once you got a misheard line in your head, you can't _stop_ hearing it that way, even when you rewind to check (like in Sing by MCR when you heard "Sing it 'til you nut" instead of "Sing it 'til you're nuts" and in Jesus of Suburbia when you heard something involving balls when he said bathroom stalls)
so idk if you're too young to know about this, but arnold schwarzenegger used to be the governor of california during the early 2000s. because of his prior film career, he was known as "the governator," a play on his terminator role. his time in office was not particularly well-liked, but looking back, it almost seems quaint how we thought the whole state would burn down on his watch.
Holy crap dude😂 I was aware that he was a governor but I did not know that he was a low tier one! It seems like not a lot of people really enjoyed his stay in office, apart from the fact that he was in terminator, but it’s truly impressive to see how Green Day incorporates real life events into their music and make it part of a story. Really cool details! Thank you for letting me know and for all of the support as well! I really appreciate it!😁🫶
It was years after. September of 1982, billie was in 4th grade, and his father died after a devastating battle with esophageal cancer. He wouldn't have wrote it right after he was like mabye 7 to 20 years after.
Oh man that’s so sad! I had no idea that’s what the song was about. Thank you for letting me know! It definitely adds more layers and different thoughts to next time I give the song a listen. Thank you for all of the support as well. I really appreciate it💪
yeah, i always feel kinda bad for billie joe when october approaches cos people keep making the same "wake up" joke at him. i'm sure most of the folks making the joke don't know what the song is about, but it must be awkward to have people memeing about what sounds like a very formative loss for him.
