Thanks for the video! I am going to do my first overnight backpacking trip in February and have been slowly buying the gear I need for this winter weather. My sister recommended Oakley; they make sport/outdoor eyewear. I haven't tried them out yet so can't give you any real feedback. I do plan on giving them a try; thankfully they work with prescriptions as well.
@@lawrenberghanson4401 I have an old pair of Oakley wrap-around sunglasses (prescription), and they're great for outdoor activities. I was sad to find out that they can no longer update my prescription because that style is obsolete. For now, I'm just using them with the old prescription, but I might replace them with a new style at some point. They're pretty pricey with the prescription though.
Thanks,@@cherylharrison3518! Yeah, the price is why I haven't bought it yet, but I am the type of person that buys one thing and uses it until it disintegrates, so it may be worth it if it lasts long.😂 How long did you own your pair? Zenni Optical recently started a sports/activewear line. I currently have a Zenni frame, and I like it a lot for my everyday seeing glasses; I may have to check that out. So @amandaoutside Zenni might be a good option and it won't take a huge bite out of your wallet.
I live in a hot climate, so even in winter it's usually never colder than about 12 C (54 F) but it is fun for me to imagine a real winter! Your area is so beautiful.
I would recommend Goodr sunglasses. They are perfect for running, hiking, essentially any outdoor stuff. They aren’t very expensive, they are polarized and they don’t slip (which is great for sports)!
Hey Amanda, I ski all the time with a Camelback with an insulated hose like yours. When it’s really cold I blow air into the hose to clear the water after I drink. It prevents freezing especially in the bite valve.
Always smart to keep a few hand warmers as emergency. I climbed Mt.Hood and a older gentleman was in a rush to get back to the car lot. Apparently, his toes were numb and forgot his warmers. I gave him my emergency warmers. I’ve never seen someone take a boot off so fast in 5degree weather.
Roll vaseline in cotton balls. Rub in good and keep as separate balls. Store in a ziplock. Many use this method and it's my favorite for getting tinder burning. A spark or two and the individual ball will burn more than long enough to get even thicker tinder burning.
Thanks for sharing your gear! I camped last winter in freezing temperatures. I have a good bag but nothing would keep my feet warm. My toes were so cold I thought I had frostbite! I quickly went out on my return home and purchased toe warmers in the brand you showed and stowed them with my gear. Never again will I have cold feet when winter camping!
Minus33 vase layer gloves are the best I’ve found, couple them with mitt shells, game changer. Also, Bergeon base layers work so well, holds heat, sheds sweat, highly recommend these!
an electric hand warmer - great for climbing or other activities in cold weather where you may not be doing a lot of consistent cardio. Zippo makes one that I love. And hot tea/beverage all the way.. huge difference. Snow baskets for trekking poles.
What is the brand name of the red gloves you’re wearing under your mittens? Looking for a pair that’s light to wear while driving in the morning. Love your videos!
When it comes to sunglasses you can’t beat a good pair of Ray-Bans. I like the Wayfarers. They’re not cheap but the quality and durability is outstanding. And well worth the cost per wear.
Thanks for the lovely video- we don't get weather like like that in the UK. I love my SunGod sunglasses, I now have 2 pairs and find them invaluable when I'm outdoors!
Thanks for the great video! I've seen a few people recommend Goodr sunglasses, and I would agree - they fit well, don't slip at all, they look stylish, and they're cheap so I don't feel like I need to be so precious/protective about them like I would a more expensive pair. The only times I've had trouble with them fogging was if I wore a particularly tight neck gaiter or mask over my nose and kind of blocked bottom air flow.
You asked about sunglasses… I love my Knockaround. They were only $30 look great and have been perfect for my outdoor activities. Totally agred about your love of winter hiking. So different than summer. Much slower and can’t go as far but damn is it beautiful and the lack of crowds is awesome. Just did a couple short hikes around Mammoth this past weekend and am still glowing 😍
New to your channel and I'm intrigued. I guess I'll have to watch more and perhaps subscribe! I looked through the responses for recommended sunglasses and I didn't see the ones I use. They're a bit non-traditional for hiking, but I wear Carhartt sunglasses. Not very expensive (I think around $30), and they're not only solar protecting, but also safety glasses (hey, you never know...). Also, what I like about them is they come with a strap that can replace the removal stems if want them to stay on no matter what. Nice video - thanks!
Love my suncloud rambler polarized sunglasses! They're often on sale on amazon and other places and really reasonably priced for quality polarized sunglasses. Great video as always!
I second Knockarounds. Especially the sport grip ones. My grip pair are a must when sweating for sure but I love both pairs I have. They're lightweight, inexpensive and just plain fun. I've also tried Goodr, but Knockarounds are more durable IMO.
Are you hiking in the backcountry of Bryce? I just don’t remember this many trees in the general area. It’s so peaceful and beautiful! Curious what is your fave winter jacket and pants? I have a pair of water resistant sweat pants that I love.
My go to sunglasses for outdoor activities are Oakley flak jackets with polarized lenses or if I'm really going to be out in bright direct full sun all day (on the water or out in the snow on a sunny day), I'll go for my Costa Del Mar Reeftons. I think they might be a bit big for you (I've got a big head lol).
... Always enjoy your video's ,, Beautiful scenery and content topics are covered so well .... Whether it be a day hike or extended treks ,, I always take along many Lipton's Cup-A-Soup packets for a quick break or passing storm ... prefer them thru the midday over coffee ,, tea or chocolate ... as of late Wild Zora has a similar product ....
Love Bryce Canyon in the winter! It's so beautiful! I love my Sunski Headlands sunglasses. They stay on really well with any activity I do, and they have a good guarantee (which I've had to use). You can also exchange out the lenses if they get scratched. I just had my first snowshoeing overnight trip in my Oboz Bridger boots, can confirm they're awesome! What are the red glove liners you were wearing in this? That's one thing I need to get.
Good timing. I was just looking to go snowshoeing at Great Basin NP. I just found out they have snow shoes at the visitor center than you can borrow for free. I've never done it before, so I've gotta shop for some warm clothes.
That sounds awesome. I've only been to Great Basin once in the Fall and I absolutely loved it! I bet it will be beautiful in the winter. Will you do the cave tour? I think they run year-round and it was really cool!
It's from Patagonia. I've had it for a few years now, so I'm not sure of the style name anymore but it's been a great outer layer for me. I wear it snowboarding too!
I got a pair of Oboz boots late year and they have been an absolute game changer for winter hiking. They’re spendy but having warm feet and no blisters is worth it.
$200 is not that spendy for a good pair of boots. There really is no such thing as good, low-cost boots (especially if you're talking winter boots!)...plus a good pair of boots should last for years.
I have a buff / neck gator I want to get my wife one I think what you were wearing would be nice looks warm and stylish. She also makes your granola all the time.
Hello 👋 Amanda, it's good to see you again. Only 14°, that's T-shirt 👕 weather. (Only kidding) I always enjoy your informative videos. You deserve 5***** Always stay safe out there. Keep these great videos coming along. 🤗 👋
100% agree about bladder preference. I had no idea there was a "controversy" Can you elaborate? I sure needed that hose cover on my hike in Mammoth this weekend. :0
I absolutely love my new Zippo, rechargeable, battery powered hand warmer! I take it on dog walks and it has become an essential for any outdoor activity in the cold.
I have Oboz boots in a different style and I love them; agree on not needing break-in. Winter where I live is usually highs in the mid-40s (cold snaps in the 20s sometimes) so I absolutely love it, so much better than hot humid mostquito-infested summer. Not sure I'd feel the same if I lived somewhere that was truly cold.
I just tested it and it seems to be working on my end so I'm not sure what happened... they are the Oboz Bridger boot in case you wanted to look them up. Sorry about the link!
Thank you for this video! Such beautiful scenery. I live in Alabama and I just got back from a spot in northern AL where we saw some bald eagles and their nests. Happy hiking!

Warmer temps I like gaiters to prevent the moisture from getting lower pant legs dry.

This video makes me too jealous 😅 that snow is so magical....
What about your mittens? My hands ALWAYS get cold!!!

Not a specific winter hiking product but oh so appreciated in winter, a pee funnel! It's so nice not having to take your pants down in cold weather.
I love the Oakley mercenary sun glasses. They are polarized but they are prizemed. They enhance the colors of everything.

The last really good hiking gear to have for emergencies is an emergency blanket. It will keep your body temp warm
Absolutely! I always have one in my backpack, even in summer!
Such a gorgeous and helpful presentation my friend, simply outstanding content! Your narration fits perfectly here, such a professional work!
Thank you so much!
Winter is definitely my favorite season to hike in. ❄️ thank you for these recommendations!

Julbo for sunglasses. 😎
Start warm, stay warm.
Best cheap and reliable outdoor sunglasses that never slip off are Goodr. Hello from a fellow Utahn 👋
I got excited when you mentioned Sierra Trading Post! Love that store! I got my current hiking bag from there as well as other items for great deals!
Favorite winter product…… Dutch oven……FRENCH ONION SOUP….. Warm…. Buttery sourdough bread…. Yes….on the campfire……. Let that thought sink in…..
Hi, Love your videos...where did you get your snowshoes?

Bryce Canyon is on my bucket list of places to horseback ride.
That would be incredible. I love Bryce Canyon. It was the first national park I went to when I moved to Utah years ago. It's so special there!

Is the green neck gaiter you're wearing from meriwool or merino.tech?

Sun Cloud Polarized Optics make a great light weight relatively inexpensive product that's great for activewear
Thank you for the recommendation! I've heard of those before but never tired them. The price point is great!

Look at that snow, not a thing here in coastal Virginia
Yea we've been getting a lot of snow this year in Utah!
What on earth is the youtube algorithm doing. Whatever, this is cool.
Hold up, what is the water bladder controversy? 😂
Great stuff here but the link to the boots is not working. Says something went wrong 🤔
