CD Shattering at 170,000FPS! - The Slow Mo Guys
I truly love this video. It's like pointing a camera in Science's face.
+The Slow Mo Guys 1 million fps Slow Motion video/watch?v=QfDoQwIAaXg
Why is the phantom so slow ;)
+The Slow Mo Guys
try it again, just with more cd's :P as mythbusters would say, worth doing? then it's worth overdoing :D
+The Slow Mo Guys you should make 3 cd s at once.
Man I don't know science
just to add something... I am not daying this to be rude but 4 seconds in 170,000 phrames per second would in real time take about to 4 hours/ 22 minutes/ and 4 seconds
"At its lowest resolution, it can record a million frames per second."
Recording a pixel in one million frames per second would be quite the spectacle.
Can we have that video made, actually tho?
I think it can do it at 128x8
it does a million fps at 128x32
Brandon Clifton
RAMCNEIL dude
How is it possible that at one point all the world had was cavemen, fire, and wooden sticks and now we have cameras that can record at 170,000 frames per second? Totally blows my mind
Same.
They were exaggerating or something, because they admitted it was 28,750 fps in the video
+Cactus Everdeen Just watch the damn video, it is actually 170 000 fps
+Andrew Hyoretsu I did rematch I'm to lazy to delete my comment so calm down
+Andrew Hyoretsu 170,600*
Four seconds of video = 96 gigabytes. o_0
How do they even store video at 24GB/s? Even a RAM disk wouldn't be fast enough to keep up!
I don't know how it is done specifically for this camera but you can reach these speeds for example with GDDR RAM which is used in graphics cards. With more specialized technology you can even reach hundreds of GB/s (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_Bandwidth_Memory)
I know right!
That sounds like my phone
There are 682,400 frames in that four seconds, imagine having that many pictures on a device
Just think...one day, our phones will record 1million FPS videos.
I like your channel
Hey! Good to see you here! Big fan of your works! Your channel always reminding me of my childhood which I used to play Portal and Half Life. Really good memories :3
We can record at 1 trillion fps already
Neat seeing you here, Harry. The Pit song is pretty damn sweet! :D
Certain that it won't.

If you pause at about 6:18 that would make a perfect album cover... in that resolution and everything

ToxicSkull, we want the cover to be readable, not graphically cool.
Now all we need is that 1mil fps with a 2TB Hard Drive at the ready.
You would need about 10 1tb WD raptors in raid 0
David Canfield
Have you heard about the 1 trillion fps camera? It's slows time down so much it can see light beams with are normaly invisible to the naked eye.
Yeah I heard something about it

Four seconds of footage, 96 gigs. How much storage space does the Phantom hold??

"YAY I'm early to a SlowMo video. FUCK I have to wait an hour for it to process 1080p."

It wont do it, come back in a year and it wont be 1080
Will Richards it won't huh? Then how come it's currently 1080p?
Will Richards Well it's 1080p ow. What is your point?
Will Richards it just got uploaded in 1080p. I understand what you mean, but while the slo mo wasn't filmed in 1080p, the rest of the scenes were. It doesn't bother me any ways, my computer can only handle 720p
eric Burtron im pretty sure that everyone saying it won't process to 1080p are talking about the footage the Phantom shot. Not the video itself.

The way Dan said "Just a little bit of dust"
HighSpeedPhantom It means something. It wasn't random. Yaay #LittleBritain
Alien Or Sutin Yeah. It's terrifying how few people got that...
Right, not to sound ignorant but I don't get it.
FireTalon24 It's from a UK Sketch TV show from about 10 years ago called "Little Britain". You're not ignorant for not knowing it. There was a character in some of the sketches who was always suggesting that eating dust was a good way of losing weight. It became something of a catchphrase ... "little bit of dust".
Alien Or Sutin Technically they would be ignorant for not knowing about it. Ignorance simply means lack of knowledge. Everyone is ignorant to a certain degree. Now, how "ignorant" translated to "stupid" or other idiotic meanings in today's society is beyond my guess. People today have really become ignorant to the real definition of "ignorance"
The way Dan looks at Gav when he says "It's so.. Bent!" at 6:54 lmao

Alien Or Sutin I didn't want to watch it in 360p, that's why i have not seen whatever you are referring to.
Alien Or Sutin Even though they cannot record their slowmo-footage at 1080p, why don`t they keep the resolution at full HD, so we can at least enjoy the rest of the video? It really does not makes sense to argue that way... They could have just edited in the lower-resolution footage, right?

***** Isn't it _fascinating_ that all of the shatter points occurred in the "gravity-negative" dead zone between the 180 and 315 degree marks, and that two happened at the first mark, and two at the second?
180 is the point at which gravity stops "helping" the downward spin and starts fighting the material as it changes direction.
315 is the point at which gravity has done its maximum work pulling at the leading edge as it heaves up, away from the earth, and just before it starts getting some relief by "leaning" on the axel and "laying over" toward its downward fall.
These forces are exquisitely fractional, but that 135 arc is where the maximum force of gravity creates a differential, the _slightest_ difference in force, magnified by the blistering spin, and is enough to finally work the molecular structure of the material apart in one specific place, setting off a chain reaction. That's not to say that the shatter point _couldn't_ happen elsewhere…but it's most likely to happen in this range, as this extraordinary set of videos demonstrates! :^D
Thanks for the fun, gentlemen!
Next Genisye HAHAHA!! x^D
Always the risk, I guess! Hope it was useful to you! :^)
Grymmorgan So consequently repeating this experiment with a horizontally aligned disc should give us a completely unpredictable shatter point?
Moehritz Bla
The shatter point isn't based off gravity at all, rather, where the disk is bending the most.
RipleySawzen I think Grymmorgan's point was that gravity affects the way the disk bends, making it more likely for the shatter point to be within a certain range. Moehritz Bla's question was highlighting the fact that horizontally spinning the disk would set gravity's effect on the disk to be equal at all points, thus negating gravity's effect.
Joshua Murphy
The outside edge of the CD is experiencing over 35,000 times the force of gravity. Do you really think Earth's gravity is having any effect at all? It's less than 0.003% of the forces involved here.

What would happen if you took the CD to the state of warping and then slowed it down to a stop? Would the CD maintain a warped shape or would it return to normal?
it would return to normal of course
Yeah obviously
|Fresh|Pe How do you know? CD's are solid. If you slowed them down gradually, wouldn't they maintain their molecular bond positions? I don't really know though. I guess you are right.
it would return to normal
That's what i was wondering, if they were to stop the cd from being destroyed (at its maximum breaking point essentially) eould it remain warped or would it go back to its. Normal form or would it stay warped and slowly change back
"this is the slowest slow mo video we have ever done" - a sentence we will never be able to hear since they made a light-speed slow mo video.
When it starts warping it sounds like a futuristic spaceship getting ready to move at light speed
5:35
These cameras cannot record sound. All the sound is added in editing
+pfootball6363 the sound he is talking about was real because it was not shot with the high speed camera when the sound happens
To me, it sounds like two miniature jet engines firing.
have u ever heard that @Denboy_Kad
This is incredible.
Though, I'm curious what would happen if you guys stopped the motor after the CD's been warped. I'm guessing it would keep it's new shape, but that would be pretty cool to see.
I was thinking that too...
nah it'd go back to its normal shape, unless it was heated before the spinning started
Stephen W Yeh you wouldn't be able to keep the morphed shape, the sudden drop in speed would shatter the CD and you wouldn't have enough time decrease the spin gradually before it were to shatter. Simply, once the CD has began warp it will defiantly shatter, no matter how hard you try to cut the spin.
Chill bruh I don't think it would shatter if you were to turn down the speed gradually. It has not reached it's breaking point yet, and I see no reason why it would. Despite most likely being weakened structurally, I think it would only shatter if you kept it at that speed.
I'm curious too.

yesss!!?
You can probably film that on a samsung s7 or s5. with s5 you can chose the frame rate. It does 60, 140 and 270 fps.
If an engineer analyzed this, what would he see?
At the first moment of disintegration, the shards tend to propagate separations that are longer in a tangential direction than in a radial direction; this suggests a dominating banded, tangential laminar structure to the polymer chains of the CD's polycarbonate substrate. Such a disk structure of roughly concentric bands would more freely expand tangentially with the extensive centrifugal forces that differentially increase with radius, the most extended circumference toward the outside, giving it the necessary ruffle that must leave the plane of the CD like a sine wave wrapped around a cylinder.
The slow movement of this wave of deformation is understood as a standing wave that can slowly migrate with it own inertial consequences until some disharmonic vibration destroys the system's balance & integrity. Energy is in the fast-rotating disk, but its trigger is in the wave! Disintegration can be predicted, given enough relevant data! At a certain rotational speed, a failure initiates at the radius of highest extensive stress, the OD, and rapidly propagates throughout the structure! Failure! This is one explanation.
And then there's the possible effects of inductive influence of a fast-rotating disk with a conductive aluminum coating... Science never sleeps!
SIMKINETICS Well said. :p
SIMKINETICS Now I want to see them do it with a blu-ray. It's thicker and should shatter less and at a higher speed.
NFITC1 it should shatter more actually at higher speeds because high quality discs and more consistency
Cooldude2819 the streamer Likely true unless the thickness is also different. Failures start at the imperfections.
The thing they were using was not perfectly vertical, causing the warping I think. If it were more rigid it might break at that SIMKINETICS
For anyone wondering, I've calculated that Gav and Dan have an estimated +$400,000 in equipment (the cameras, lenses, tripods, monitors, softwares, computers, cords/triggers, lights, and storage devices)
RUclips’s algorithm decided I should watch this for the 26th time
And I will.
maybe u can film electricity or a lamp while it turns on
Paga Nini
The speed of light is ~300,000,000 meters per second. At 170,000 FPS, a single photon or electron would travel 1.7 kilometers in a single frame. That's too fast even for the Slow Mo Guys.
Joe Vasicek yes the light shure. but u can see how it becomes brighter
Trying to film light obviously wouldn't work. He means the actual turning on of the lamp, watching the light slowly become brighter.
LyricLy youd need a far higher frame rate to film light in motion, more like a trillion fps. Theres videos on you tube where some scientists have filmed that fast using a series of cameras. Pretty cool watching light photons passing through a soda bottle
2:49 Change speed to .25 or lower if you can, your welcome!
why would someone do that? it just lowers the framerate. whats the point. it stutters a lot at that framerate. might as well watch it like a video and not like a damn slideshow.
Because it makes it even slower, and if you want to follow the progress of the crack it makes things a bit easier. 6.25 ~ 7.5fps isn't *too* herky jerky, it's about the lower limit of what's acceptable for moving pictures (and hence why YT doesn't let you set it any slower)
Even better, set it to .25 and see it in 170,000fps @ 4:38
I love it that all the videos I get to watch they say "it's the fastest we ever filmed" :))
Worlds hardest puzzle, the shattered cd
it is still funny to me that Dan in in the MILITARY, and a spinning CD scares him.
I was watching from across the ocean through a video on the internet and I was shrinking back from it lol
THEY SPIN ME RIGHT ROUND, BABY, RIGHT ROUND.
LIKE A CD BABY; RIGHT ROUND, RIGHT ROUND.
So you can write 69gb data per second on the disk in 1 sec? Yeah! New invention!
Omg that Little Britain reference is great
