As an instructor at a college in North Carolina, it is so disheartening to see my students walk on campus and profess to be some of the most educated when they are some of the most illiterate And uneducated when it comes to culture, race, and ethnicity. Fun fact: You rarely see Afro Cubans denying their black heritage. It’s usually the dark skinned Dominicans. That goes back to the history of ethnic cleansing in the DR.

Yes African Americans fought for civil rights but don’t get it twisted many Latinos did their part too. So get off your high horse and do some research, google is free!!
Having been in the DR for 30 years I can tell you Dominicans do recognize what color they are. However, they don't identify by shade of color. They are all Latin, and they all speak Spanish. Being Dominican is a cultural identity, not a racial one.
Stop it. we literally have a phrase "mejorar la raza" Thats commonly used. we are and have ALWAYS been a colorist country. Even now being told you look like a Haitiano is used and considered as an insult for people who are dark skinned. We definitely identify by shade of color and privilege our society by it. We love to say, "that's an American" thing when what we do is far worse than how it goes stateside.

That’s cool that you feel that way it is your right to feel so. The main thing black americans have to understand is that in the DR and many hispanic countries the culture very much mixed with a unified feel as in they all sound the same when speaking Spanish regardless of skin complexion, eat the same food, listen to the same music, usually follow christianity and dress more or less the same too. You cover your eyes and couldn’t tell who is black or white when they speak. This is something that happens all over latin america there isn’t this back and forth tug of war that exists so hard in the U.S. over race and for some of these reasons could be why Dominicans don’t feel the need to classify themselves as anything other than Dominicans. Lots of black folks that have gone to South America or the caribbean can confirm that there isn’t the astronomical levels of racism that exists here in the U.S.

As a proud Dominican I will not stop educating Dominicans and all Latin American people of our black heritage. Even though I'm generically I'm a little more caucus Asian than black I can not feel like white at all. When people look at me when I identify as black they always say " you're not black" you're Spanish or Dominican I always tell them Spanish is not a race it's a language and Dominican isn't a race either it's a nationality. What I am ashamed of is the way they are treating our Haitian people in the country
Haiti is going to be ok. They will be rich in the future. The war conjure has been broken. Haiti will be on the come up. The Dominican leaders know it. They have been informed of the situation. They better cooperate.

It is so important for us to have these open discussions about our people throughout the diaspora. I am a black American, who literally just recently got out of a conversation with someone from Rwanda who said that they had no idea how African-Americans arrived in America. He also went on to say that we did not come back to Africa to rescue them or to help them and I had to explain to him that the majority of us had no idea what was going on in Rhonda Until the movie was made. He had no idea as to slavery or how African people bartered and negotiated their people to America to pay off debt. We are still having dialogue and he’s sharing written materials with me and I’m sharing written materials with him, and the both of us are in total shock. We prefer to identify as a mulato multicolor country where everyone is somehow mixed, indio regardless of color.
