I think it was either 97 or 98 when I saw this in an arcade for the first time as "Scud Race" or something like that. Visually it was UNREAL for that time period. I really miss being able to see tomorrows graphical possibilities for consoles in arcades years ahead of time man.
As close as you can get today is to find a arcade with VR kits, but even that you can set up in your home for ~$2000. The story goes that Sega got a very sweet deal on the Model 3 arcade hardware (which Super GT / Scud Race ran on). Apparently the US military overbought units they had R&D'ed with Lockheed Martin. The actual value of each discrete hardware unit was $500,000 - $1 million, but these arcade units went for a few tens of thousands "only".
Light years ahead of its time. The entire game is 3d, with individual parts of the cars such as the wheels animated, shaders and shines visible on the cars, clear soundtracks, a beautiful map, minimal details such as when you bump sparks go everywhere, the also clear engine sounds, a cinematic look.. AND EVEN DAMAGE-ABLE?!
It was released in 1996 which makes it even more mindblowing, cant wait to finally get a proper emulated version. Its a real shame sega didn't port more model 3 games... at least the outrun 2 xbox devs remade the tracks beautifully and also the ones from daytona 2.
I can't think of a modern racer with tracks as immersive and 3d looking as those on sega super gt. It makes tracks on today's racers look like boring, static wallpaper in comparison.

Fuck me.... grass particles... licenced cars, their's and world details. As for '96 that's absolutely amazing

I love this game along with Namco RACE ON! Feels like rip off of Gran Turismo and Need for speed
