    • @riraru_zorik
      @riraru_zorik 2 года назад +195

      That's true, when warriors are getting seriously harmed by the enemy, they hug the flag as the symbol of not giving up even if there is nothing left and it's covering with their blood. The red and black flag are belongs to Ukrainian Nationalists organization, the main protectors of Ukraine as country and idea of "Freedom or death" thing, so technicaly it's Ukrainian flag but in the other side, not different "old" or "new" version, it's just got different meaning, it's more about fight.

    Regarding the red/black flag:
    1. The azure/gold (=blue/yellow) flag has always had greater usage and wider recognition and its origin is far older, so it would be inappropriate to call it “new” and the red/black one “old”.
    2. The red/black was used as a military/battlefield flag, in times of fierce fights for Independence and later mostly only by the Ukrainian ultra-patriotic and nationalistic organisations. I can’t recall it being used during peaceful times or outside of military domain and political far-right.
    3. The meaning of colours of the red/black flag indeed comes from Ukrainian cultural tradition where red is a symbol of love and black of sorrow. These colours are primary colours of Ukrainian embroidery and traditional clothing (vyšyvanka). Only later they obtained an additional interpretation of heroes’ red blood soaking the black soil, mostly due to having been used during armed conflicts and revolutions.
    4. There is a popular Ukrainian meme/legend saying the blue/yellow and the red/black flags are one and the same view of the wheat fields under the sky which just looks differently during the daytime and at night, which I find quite symbolic too.

    • @FlarGarg
      @FlarGarg 2 года назад +187

      @@wyntrheart The one in the video is from very early on, when the Bolsheviks used Russian even when in Ukraine. It wasn't until 1927 that the government apparatus had officially started to implement a full introduction of Ukrainian into everyday life, including state symbols.
      The variations included УСРР, and УРСР under a hammer and sickle. These existed from 1929 to 1937, and from 1937 to 1950 respectively. When Ukraine became a member of UN (Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus all had separate representation in the UN, essentially giving USSR three votes. Yup. They wanted all 15 at first), its flag was changed to the red with a thin blue stripe, and the Soviet hammer&sickle under a five-pointed star.
      So this video actually missed a couple flags.

The soviets banned the ukrainian language. We had a whole literature movement called "The Executed Reincarnation" because poets who wrote in ukrainian were hunted and slaughtered. Great video! One remark though: in Ukraine, we are saying that Lithuanians did not conquer Ukrainian land but inherited after Rurikids. And, indeed, the Lithuanian duchy was officially named as "Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Rus, etc." They adopted the old Rus language (which we call "old Ukrainian") as a state language, and before the Union of Lublin this country was regarded by local Rus princes as "their." This historical connection is explicit for us. Even the Colar of President of Ukraine has a Lithuanian coat of arms on it, and more recently Gitanas Nauseda (Lithuanian President) began his speech to Ukrainian Parliament emphasizing that both our states sprung from one historical root.

    Ukrainian insight with corrections and additions:
    1. The order of colors on the national flag is still an object to dispute, but the yellow-blue one has a lot less recognition, basis and it's support comes from some metaphysical and feng shui nonsense (no joke!).
    2. The red-black has official name: Red-Black Revolutionary Banner. It was used not by whole OUN, but only by it's younger and more popular wing -- OUN(b). While the blue field with a Tryzub with sword was used by pro-German OUN(m).
    3. Basicaly, red and black are the folk colors -- most used in traditional national art. You can even find a lot of folk songs singing about the two colors or something related to them. Also, if you look at anything related with traditional Ukrainian culture it will have those two colors.
    4. The meaning of colors on the flag are usually described as blood and death of Ukrainian heros. As in the cry: "Glory to heroes! (who laid their lives for Ukraine)".

    Yeah, as a Pole I wholeheartedly wish Ukrainians victory in the current struggle for survival and freedom (their own and others) but my skin does crawl a bit each time I see them waving the red-black flag. I wish they would let go of it and what it represents, stop glorifying OUN/UPA. From what I've read/heard this process kinda was already happening before the war (the Right Sector lost nearly all of its seats in the parliament, for example). Part of the reasons why Putin decided to attack was probably that it was becoming increasingly hard to paint Ukrainians as "Nazis", even to complete fools. I believe we will be able to have a calm discussion about it later once free Ukraine will prevail, will be safe again and rebuilding.
    I also believe that by then Putin and Lukashenko will be in the garbage bin of History and Hilbert will have a good occasion to make a video about why Belarus is changing its flag (assuming he won't make a video explaining the white-red-white flag earlier anyway).
    BTW 1410 was technically long before the formation of the Commonwealth in 1569. The union between the Kingdom of Poland (with its Ruthenian provinces) and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (which could be described in many ways as a Rus'/Ruthenian state) went through a bit of evolution.

The poster shown in the video appeared a little later and it is not entirely clear where it came from. By the way, the black and red flag is the flag of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (1942-1955). and the colors, judging by the old songs, mean: red - love, and black - hell and darkness. but there are many interpretations and they are different. Oh. really, I do not think so. The red-black flag comes from Ukrainian nationalist of Stepan Bandera and the boss od terrible UPA-bands of Roman Shuhevicz. (Now it is used by Ukrainin nationalists, the Asov-Division). They both cooperated with Hitler, murdered 100 000-200 000 od Polish civilians (mostly neighbours, women and children (in English it is called "Volyn slaughter"). But these nationalsts also killed Jews and Soviets - at the time of the terrible Hitler-nazi-occupation, between 1942-45 and even later. Until today Ukrainians deny what they did to Polish people - we wanted only to exhume the bodies of the victims and bury them in a Christian way. The Ukrainian government didn't allow it. - Now Poland helps 3,5 millions of Ukrainian refugees (although they took much of Polish territories - Poland did not try to regain them in 1990, we wanted peace). Ukraine became sovereignty not through fights or war, but as a gift from the Russians, from Gorbatchev, who became Nobel Peace Prize. We Poles have 5 Noble Prizes in literature, spoke always Polish at home, Ukrainians did not care for their own language. - Now in the commentaries, Ukrainians write about the blood - which blood - of Polish people, Jews and Russians, who fought against Hitler? - There are nations, like Kurds, Jews or Ukrainians, that for a long period of time did not have their own country. Ukrainians always lived in Russia or Poland-Lithuania. They have full independent country 31 years now. - But there is still a cult of Bandera, he is their national hero, a mass murder!!! On the 1st of January this year in Kiev was Bandera-March....

Today we are grateful to all those who support us and want to stop the genocide that is happening now and not in the past! Hundreds of innocent people are dying as Jews once did and this must stop!

      @@tetiana.ns13 There was an Ukrainian genocide against at least 100 000 Polish people, Ukraine never even said even sorry for that. As far as I know Chruszczowv and Breshnev were Ukrainians and governed for 29 years the Soviet Union. In the 80ties I and my family fought against communism in Poland, we were afraid of Breshnev!!! Ukrainans were happy and did not protest. I do not know about any genocide, Ukrainians were respected in the Soviet Union. They spoke Russian, not Ukrainian, chose after 1991 pro-russian presidents.. Poland for 123 was not on the maps of Europe, but in these times the best Polsish literature, musica and paintings evolved. We have 8 Nobel prizes, 5 in Literature. And we are rather small or middle country. - I heard yesterday a story of a Ukrainian woman, that couldn't fly from Kharkiv to Poland thorugh Ukraine (surely because of the nationalist Asov-Division), so she flew to Moscow, then to Minsk, then went by the bus to Poland (Cracow). How come, that Russians or Belarussians did not kill her, and why could she not escape through her own country Ukraine? I know some languagen, understand Russian and Ukrainian. - Media are telling about many shootings of schools or kindergardens in Uraine and then some days ago president Selenski said, there are 120 victims among children!!! So where is the genocide! Only in one school should be hundred of dead children. I am of course happy that Ukrainian children and people are alive. So maybe it is the truth when Putin says, he wants to destroy military objects. Why did Putin not bomb the governmental part of Kiew? When Asov people go to empty schools, Russians shoot at them, but not at the children. I wish all the nations and coutries PEACE. - There is a list of big Ukrainians, and the mass murder Bandera is at the place 3, Szuchewych from the UPA-bands on the place 12. - We in Poland do not have mass murders as heroes.

    'Tryzub' originally - 'Rarog' the myth falcon who attack by dropping-down very fast just on their target. (The way how falcons rly attacks). Similare falcons we can see on some Danish old emblems.
    Edit;
    Btw. Volodymyr the Great inherited that emblem because of "Rørik family emblem" and make different variation...

    The video is not quite right. black and red flag is the fighting flag of Stepan Bandera(or УПА which translates as Ukraine’s Rebel Army) . Yellow and blue was always the flag of Ukraine.

      Meaning of the yellow and blue flag 🇺🇦 - yellow wheat field and a blue sky
      Meaning of red and black flag - setting sun, creating a red sunset and black soil, or red is Ukrainian blood and black is the land this blood was spilled for.

    Black and red are pretty iconic colors in Ukrainian folklore. For example, they are the most popular colors in traditional embroidery - for example, you can try to google and see traditional vyshyvankas (embroidered shirts), most of the patterns used are black and red.

    3:20 - the reason for wide use of gold-blue flag was wide spread of Ukrainians in Russian empire. There were a few places of compact ukrainian population in modern-day Kazakhstan and far east, that moved there at the beginning of 20th century in search of free land. Those places (known as Yellow Klin and Green Klin) almost became 'New Ukraine' during Russian Civil war
