I got a grade 8 in literature last year, which is really good considering I’ve always been much better at the maths side of things, but poetry was always one of my favourite parts of school last year. I think your videos made me think of poetry in a much more analytical and creative way, e.g. looking for double meanings, using context, making my own links, considering structure and form etc. I think it’s why I did really well on the unseen poetry, it’s like you helped teach me the process of understanding+analysing a poem rather than your videos just being a way to memorise content, though I can still remember like all of your Seamus heaney follower runthrough 😅. Appreciate the work you do.
In my opinion, the top two poems to revise are Ozymandias- power of nature, people and corruption, and then Bayonet Charge- conflict, effect of conflict on people, power of governments. But it's better to remember 2 to 3 quotes from each poem, the opening, one in the middle, and one at the end. You can also use the names of the poems in your analysis too if you forget everything else!!!
Hi Mr Bruff, just wanted to say I'm currently 22 and it's been about 5/6 years since I took my GCSEs. Life's going really great and I was reflecting back to everything on how it all started, and it all came down to your channel. Back in Y11 in 2018, I was averaging about 2 on my English mocks, and after realizing how much I was in trouble, I started to panic and look for different ways to just get a pass. Came across your channel and I would spend about 3-4 hours every day, watching your videos for 2/3 months. Ended up passing with a 4 and a 5, but that's beside the point. You see, watching your videos and learning outside the "normal" studying method, sort of made me feel like I found the cheat code to life haha. And that idea behind achieving the dream seemed much easier with this new hack. I ended up doing the same in college where I would figure out different ways to learn and finish assignments, getting a D* D* D* in just 2 years. Although I didn't go into the same industry as my course (computer science), the idea got even more solidified. Long story short, the same principle of trying new/different methods to achieve what I wanted to achieve, allowed me to work with some of my favorite celebrities, allowed me to get a job at the world's biggest football club at the age of 19 as a social media creator and now at 22, the future seems even bigger and brighter. And today when I was driving back from work, I was thinking about where it all started, and realized it was all because of you! So I can't thank you enough for that Mr Bruff! I hope you realise the impact you're having on teens🙏
Did you know The Emigree is actually not about a country but the country is a metaphor for the narrators ex partner and the “city” described in that poem is supposed to be her heart. The poet talks about this herself. It represents a toxic relationship
true but how are you going to link that to any other poem? i think just stick to the country unless you can explain it well and make a link to another poem
@@yaj9349bro, love and relationships is way more difficult than power and conflict, I did love and relationships in yr9, and everything was like so hard to understand
This is really helpful, please could you send the link of your book containing the practice papers for language and literature if you have those? Thanks a lot
Mr Bruff, are there any tips on how to “read between the lines”? I have so much trouble with it. I fail so hard in that department and it is practically mandatory to get a good grade
I'd suggest looking for words/phrases/images that have a meaning beyond the surface level. Thinking about connotations is key. More here: ruclips.net/video/Ctxd2SmMzhs/видео.htmlsi=0vrv3Yu4MK5IlQQe
