Man, Katsuhiro Harada seems like a really cool guy. He stands up for his art and believes in his creations but is also willing to admit his mistakes and make up for them when necessary. Now there's a good game developer.
Well considering that the usage of the word "bug" to describe a computer problem originated with a moth that got stuck in one of the earliest computers, we basically just went full circle, lol.
More facts that might interest you: The original name of Tekken, while it was in development, was "Kamuy", which denotes a deity related to a specific phenomenon; here, I assume it was an association with fighting (source: Japanese Wikipedia and Harada's Twitter). Ogre being referred to as "Toshin" kinda hails back to this, I figure. Recently, Jed Hudson found hidden unused characters within the Arcade version of Virtua Fighter 1, and found characters that resemble characters that would later be a part of Tekken. Akira's prototype design resembles the design we'd later see for Jin (spiky hair and studded fingerless gloves). A hidden character named "Jeff" is basically Prototype Jack, but has a normal complexion (because he's a person, not a robot). One prototype for Dural bears a strong resemblance to Kazuya, with similar hair, gloves, and a slanted scar on his chest very reminiscent of the one on Kazuya. This, coupled with the knowledge that Seiichi Ishi worked on both the first two Tekkens and Virtua Fighter 1, links the two franchises forever, in a sense. Ishii would later return for the development of Ehrgeiz, which features Ken Mishima, a character very much influenced by Jin and Kazuya. In that game alone, Devil Kazuya and Heihachi are found in a very basic character list text found in the game (source: The Cutting Room Floor). Ken himself has a secret costume where he looks exactly like Hwoarang's P1 costume from Tekken 3, down to the Orange hair (although the hair is still shaped like Jin's). The Ridge Racer series is chockfull of Tekken references via Billboards. Ridge Racer Revolution, for example, has two references to Tekken: one in the form of Heihachi's character select portrait, and another in the form of Jun and Lei as they appear on the cover of Tekken 2. Ridge Racer 4 features references to Tekken as well. Yoshimitsu appears as a decal that can be applied onto your vehicle as a customization. Xiaoyu and Paul also appear on billboards, with Paul's being misspelled as "Poul". His billboard advertises his motorcycle shop, which I think gets referenced to later on in the series. Or maybe I imagined that. The original Tekken Tag, although debuting only on the PS2, was actually referenced to in a few Playstation games. World Stadium 5 (released in 2001) features an advertisement for the game high up in the stands. It is stretched out so you can barely make out the Tekken logo. Indeed, it's actually the logo for Tekken Tag Tournament. Point Blank 3 also features a Mokujin shooting stage, with a song from the game's soundtrack playing in the background.
Harada seems like a guy who cares greatly about his games and other cultures. I think it's rare for that kind of respect to go into designing a character. Hats off to him.
Slight correction: _Soul Edge_ is the name of the game in arcades everywhere. It's only when it dropped on the PlayStation is when it got renamed to _Soul Blade_.
Korea has some odd regulations on violent content. For example, my mom (who was born and raised in Seoul) stated that in Korean television it's only okay to show a person being killed so long as the actual death is off-screen; you can show a gun firing or a knife being thrust and you can show the resulting corpse, but the process of death can't be depicted (similarly to how particularly gruesome deaths are shown on TV-14 shows in America). East Asia in general is pretty weird about their censorship policies.
Is this exclusive to television age ratings? Just asking since there's alot of famous south korean thrillers and such which quite large amounts of violence, so this suprised me haha.
I remember covertly playing the demo for Tekken 4 a lot. Christie was fairly broken at that stage - you could basically win without breaking a sweat, simply by holding 'back' (meaning 'back' relative to the character's position on-screen on the D-pad) and mashing the Circle button
Tekken was the first videogame I ever played, so the whole series has a special place in my heart :) I've also wanted to get Jin's tattoo for years and I will make sure I get it one day :)
fun fact about Leo, Harada since retracted that statement, TTT2 actually does both (Leo is the only character with two swimsuits, a female one with cleavage and a flat chested male surfer one), and T7 returns to making it ambiguous, with the JP version using gender neutral terms and with the EN version using male terms. TTT2 is also notably a non-canon entry. The status quo at this point is Leo's gender is subjective. Which is weird as heck, but hey. They wanted to let the player subject whatever reality they wanted for Leo.
Another character based on Polnareff is Benimaru Nikaido from The King of Fighters. Other Jojo references in fighting games are Guile from Street Fighter 2 is based on Stroheim from Part 2, and Rose from Street Fighter Alpha is based on Lisa Lisa from Part 2 as well.
I'm a massive Tekken fan and just out of curiosity could people who don't play the game very often name the first character they think of when they think of Tekken?
First character I imagine is Jin because I think he was in the intro of Tekken 3 but the first name I imagine is Yoshimitsu because it was the only character I played. (I've only played Tekken 3 on an arcade cabinet few times as a kid)
Yeah, it's no surprise, those are some of my favourite characters. It's just that I remember getting my ass handed to me by my bro with his Heihach so vividly. It was so frustrating cuz I never learned to play him properly until Tekken 5 (we skipped 4 for some reason, totally missed that one)
I need to do my research again because I forgot where I read this, but yes, you're right about Yoshimitsu. However there's more, Taki is suppose to be an ancestor of Kunimitsu and Mitsurugi is suppose to be an ancestor of the Mishimas too.
its not ignorance when these facts ocur everyday, but islamic teachings have been brainwashing generations for centuries. funny how the kettle likes to call the pot black.
Fan: Lucky Chole is shit! Remove her from the game! Harada: I'll remove you [with a picture of himself in front of an arcade machine with a machine gun]
Great video! I definitely enjoyed it. I was a bit surprised you didn't mention the controversy stirred by Josie Rizal's name being inspired by Jose Rizal.
animeheroful That's because they aren't really as big as this video made it out to be. "Controversy" sounds a bit too powerful for what actually happened.
I'm impressed, DYKG. You know how long I've been waiting for a Tekken trivia video. And Caddicarus is really the best guy to present the facts relating to Playstation games.
Bless Harada man. He doesn't take the game too seriously but at the same time, he cares about the fans and what they want. That pretty much is what a game developer should be.
I can't help but feel that Harada was trolling when he "confirmed" that Leo is female. Leo is blatantly referred to as male multiple times in Tekken 7.
RetroSteve - It would be interesting to know what the story would be like if Jun was in Tekken 3. The ideas for those other two characters sounded cool, too. Also, I'd love for Jun to return in Tekken 7. It's pretty much billed as the last game of the Mishima saga, after all.
I'm a Muslim myself and a big fan of the Tekken serie owned all games from 2 till now, didn't know about the décor controversy but deeply appreciate and respect their choice to remove it post dismay of thier fans, can't wait till Tekken 7 is out :D
This is a sincere and genuine question. He obviously didn't meant to do it in any disrespectful way. Would it have bothered you even if it wasn't his intention? I was just wondering if this was a general issue or just with some Muslims :)
Let me speak on behalf of him/her - yeah it would because in islam you're meant to keep the name of god away from feet (whether real or virtual) for example the quran is meant to be kept at a high enough height where if you were to sit down with your feet up, your feet would still be below it. Also of all the controversies in gaming regarding islam, the game(s) that has gotten away with the most is the Assassins creed series. There's alot overlooked things in there that people don't realise for some reason. Other games i've seen with islamic stuff in: The first Witcher game had a prayer mat as a decoration (nothing wrong with that), DMC3 had the design of the Kabba (the black cube in mecca, saudi) in it and of course the original fire temple music in TloZ Ocarina of Time.
bit off topic... funny how Rashid (sfv arabian character) was revealed on 9/11/2015 and a year later his main stage turned out to be a flying plane~ You can't get it more subtle then that lol.
And yet no one gets mad at the fact that Ryu was revealed a day before the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Heh, just gotta love how we are selective of our controversy. ^_^
I haven't played Tekken since the days of Tekken 3 and the original Tekken Tag Tournament. This video makes me really miss the series. Maybe I'll have to look at getting back into it.
At 4:36, that was actually my twitter account Harada was replying to. Very cool to see that in this video. And the video is 100% correct. It was a huge misunderstanding; I apologized and have since had the offer to meet for drinks. He's an awesome person.
TheNadroj10 He didn't say. But he DID confirm MULTIPLE times, that the problem wasn't with Gon's rights! And he even asked people to stop thinking that Gon is the reason why TEKKEN 3 isn't on PSN.
Tekken 5 on the Arcade will always be in my Childhood along with Metal slug 1-3, Capcom's 1943 (Still haven't beat it) Just seeing the game brings back a few memories oh well back to jamming a few rounds of street fighter 2' champion edition (arcade) during my lunch break
Sweet! Caddy got to do the Tekken one! :D Also, what about the *Church's Chicken* Ad that Paul Phoenix bursts through in Tekken 6? Or the "Lovely" Cow from the _"got milk?"_ commercial that replaces Xaioyu's character slot? Holy shit, wait... Cad, did you _see_ those ads overseas? I *completely* forgot about where you live! I can't even remember if you featured it already. I enjoyed the video though!
Apocalypsehigh Yes, SFxT (2D fighter made by Capcom) has been out for years, but Sjono is talking about TxSF (3D fighter made by Bandai Namco), which has been on development hiatus for about as many years.
Tekken, also with Street Fighter, was my childhood. I can play 1-3 and TTT 1 forever (Tekken Tag Tournament, not Texas Tittie Twister, mind you! 😂) (the more classic ones; excluding TTT 1)
Did you know that Seiichi Ishii who designed Tekken 1, and 2 when on to form his own company called DreamFactory where he design other 3D fighting games for other companies like SquareSoft and Microsoft with games like the Tobal series, Ehrgeiz, The Bouncer, and Kakuto Chojin.
Man, Katsuhiro Harada seems like a really cool guy. He stands up for his art and believes in his creations but is also willing to admit his mistakes and make up for them when necessary. Now there's a good game developer.

"insect was the result of a BUG"

Thank you.
Squirtle Master they said that when talking about insect
Well considering that the usage of the word "bug" to describe a computer problem originated with a moth that got stuck in one of the earliest computers, we basically just went full circle, lol.
ClefairyRox cool trivia. I always thought it was called that just because they are both annoying to deal with.

"Playable salmon". The cutting of this character has forever lessened the games industry.
It did indeed, by any stretch of the imagination!
let's all be happy for Segas Fighter Megamix and their playable car, Hornet.
Dam
TotalBiscuit Hope you rest in peace, my dude.
🤔
at first, i was sad the salmon guy wasn't added but can you imagine if you played an arcade game for a whole dollar and just got a flopping salmon?
I'll pay it just for the laugh
...OH. *SALMON*. I heard "flapping semen", for some reason, especially since the character was white.
That was really confusing.
I'd make that my main for competitive.
Me too, it would give me an excuse for being bad.
We all know someone would have fucked with the game mechanics and actually managed to reach into competitive with him anyway.
Harada seems like a guy who cares greatly about his games and other cultures. I think it's rare for that kind of respect to go into designing a character. Hats off to him.
We really need more people like Harada in the videogame industry.
Never heard of the guy up until today, but honestly yeah. He seems like a really open-minded, respectful lead
@@azurelionheart He's like the Namco version of Sakurai.
"Tekken 4's Tekken Force mode"
Did you know that Bryan Fury's laugh is still the greatest laugh in video gaming?
James C Holmanation Not as great as Yoshimitsu's
James C Holmanation That's not how you spell Iori Yagami
James C Holmanation you all said Kefka wrong
This Guy yamazaki has a better laugh
I'd rate Bryan's laugh over Yoshimitsu's and Iori's and Kefka's.
I know who Yamazaki is but I don't know him enough to comment on his laugh.
Slight correction: _Soul Edge_ is the name of the game in arcades everywhere. It's only when it dropped on the PlayStation is when it got renamed to _Soul Blade_.
South Korea didn't like the detachable head because it was too violent? The point of the game is to beat up the other character lol.
Drednok It's a well-known fact that South Korea is worst Korea

North Korea is only Korea!

I'm more of a Mortal Kombat guy myself but Tekken is really interesting to me. it is also great to hear caddy voicing an episode.
I've been waiting for a DYKG video on Tekken for a long time! I'm so glad you got Caddy to narrate the video as well :)
Definitely like how the Tekken development team handled PR issues and took a lot of feedback from fans in its creation. Bravo!
Thanks Harada for inspiring the creation of Rashid.
That & the awesomeness that is Tekken.

Couldn't they just reuse Gon moveset but instead have Agumon from Digimon use those moves instead? After all they are similar and Namco owns Digimon.
Literally a week ago I was thinking about my childhood playing Tekken 4 on my PS2!
Gotta love that awkward late 90's 3D!
We need a part 2 of this with some facts about the character's and their history.
Did you know that Paul Phoenix is based on Jean Pierre Polnareff?
or they go to the same barber ;)
the good old jojo references :D

IcemanGaming ma man... me too
Same here, man.
You're not alone in this one. I requested this from months ago.
Yoshimitsu from the Soul Edge and Soul Calibur franchise is an ancestor of the Yoshimitsu in Tekken.
Yoshimitsu was introduced in SoulCalibur for Dreamcast, not SoulBlade.
From what I read, Yoshimitsu became a title passed down along with his sword.
I need to do my research again because I forgot where I read this, but yes, you're right about Yoshimitsu. However there's more, Taki is suppose to be an ancestor of Kunimitsu and Mitsurugi is suppose to be an ancestor of the Mishimas too.
I just thought about how cool it would've been if they made Alisa's laser beams into a customs in the new games
That's really cool how they researched Middle Eastern culture before making the character!

Tekken 7 is going to have 2 more guest characters!
First Middle Last NBGI should make a Tekken 3 HD with Gon in the roster.
Leave that to Soul Calibur and Super Smash Bros.
Geese Howard revealed
Tekken 2 - Today are one of my favorite tekken especially 3,4,DR,6,TT2 and 7
Tekken is my favourite fighting games of all time put my 2nd favourite fighting game is Mortal Kombat.
I want a Did you Know Gaming for the King of Fighters series.
But, Harada himself said MULTIPLE times that Gon isn't the reason why TEKKEN 3 isn't available on PSN!
Then what other reason is there for Tekken 3 not being on the PSN store? I'm still blaming Gon.
TheNadroj10 He didn't say.
But he DID confirm MULTIPLE times, that the problem wasn't with Gon's rights!
And he even asked people to stop thinking that Gon is the reason why TEKKEN 3 isn't on PSN.

Also, what about the *Church's Chicken* Ad that Paul Phoenix bursts through in Tekken 6? Or the "Lovely" Cow from the _"got milk?"_ commercial that replaces Xaioyu's character slot?
Holy shit, wait... Cad, did you _see_ those ads overseas? I *completely* forgot about where you live! I can't even remember if you featured it already.
I enjoyed the video though!
We're never going to get Tekken X Street Fighter are we
Sjono dude, street fighter x tekken has been out for years.
Tekken X Street Fighter, not Street Fighter X Tekken.
Apocalypsehigh Yes, SFxT (2D fighter made by Capcom) has been out for years, but Sjono is talking about TxSF (3D fighter made by Bandai Namco), which has been on development hiatus for about as many years.
Sjono I believe it's on hiatus until Tekken 7 is done and more or less over with. So basically, never.
Fanciful Dancing Star the game is currently on hold.
Look at the background at 6:20, Namco seems to like putting "Italian tomato" buildings in their games, since they put them into Ridge Racer too.
did you know marvel vs capcom
ShengLong please!
Gustavo Cardenas wat? u don't like that series?
ShengLong i do. sorry if it sounded like i hated it
Gustavo Cardenas whos ur best tekken character? mine is king
ShengLong jin
tekken 3 is best tekken
+uzimakiking Tekken 4 & 5 were better than Tekken 3
Tekken 3, Dark Resurrection (never played the PS2 Tekken 5 but I want to), and Tag 2 are my favorites.
Tekken, also with Street Fighter, was my childhood. I can play 1-3 and TTT 1 forever (Tekken Tag Tournament, not Texas Tittie Twister, mind you! 😂) (the more classic ones; excluding TTT 1)
DO ONE ON THE "SOUL" SERIES!
SoulCalibur...? Dark Souls...?
Soul, not Souls
Lugbzurg SoulCalibur
Nice collection of trivia in this one.
I didn't know this game was made by Japanese Tony Stark...
Technically, it would be Japanese Robert Downey Jr.
Who are we kidding? Robert Downey Jr. is Tony Stark at this point.
Yep. He's rich enough for sure.
Yes. I did.
