    "Are you not entertained?"
Fun Fact: After Maximus shouts that line in the Zucchabar scene, you can see a crew member in jeans and a white t-shirt in the stands on the extreme left.
Bonus Fact: Maximus' description of his home (specifically, how the kitchen is arranged and smells in the morning and at night) was ad-libbed. It's a description of Russell Crowe's own home in Australia.
Bonus Fact: Joaquin Phoenix ad-libbed his "Am I not merciful?" scream. Connie Nielsen wasn't expecting it, and her frightened reaction was genuine.
Heartbreaking Fact: Oliver Reed died three weeks before principal photography ended. Because Proximo was considered a key character, a clause in the movie's insurance contract would have allowed the filmmakers to re-shoot all of Reed's scenes with another actor at the insurer's expense, about $25 million. However, most of the actors and crew were exhausted from the punishing schedule, and Ridley Scott did not want to cut Reed from the movie. The script was rewritten, and a body double and CGI were used to give Reed's character a plausible resolution.

Not perfect but well aware of his weaknesses and trying to be a better man. My most belowed Emperor for sure. Also it is cool to read Meditations. Just think about it. personal thoughts and fears and moral insecurities of the most powerful man on Earth during his time almost 2 thousands years ago. The director’s cut really makes all the difference. It’s about 40 minutes longer (2.5 hours vs 3 and some change), but it might be the biggest difference in quality between a theatrical & extended cut of any movie.
The theatrical is a solid medieval action movie, but the extended really makes everything work much better and turns it into an all time classic

A digital body double was created for the remaining scenes involving actor Oliver Reed's character Proximo (the old gladiator) due to Reed's death during production. Reed died from a heart attack during a break from filming Gladiator in Valletta, Malta, on the afternoon of 2 May 1999. According to witnesses, he drank eight pints of German lager, a dozen shots of rum, half a bottle of whiskey and a few shots of Hennessy cognac, in a drinking match against a group of sailors on shore leave from HMS Cumberland at a local pub. His bar bill totaled a little over 270 Maltese lira (almost 450 GBP; about 590 USD). After beating five much younger Royal Navy sailors at arm-wrestling, Reed suddenly collapsed, dying while en route to hospital in an ambulance. He was 61 years old

Caesar Marcus Aurelius (the gathering the beginning) was the last of "The Five Good Emperors" and is also considered the first of the stoic philosophers. His death lead to the end of the Pax Romana a time of relative peace and great prosperity of the Roman empire.
Two of his most famous quotes are "waste no more time arguing about what a good man should be. Be one"
"You have power over your mind- not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength."
Both are exemplified in this movie

Gladiator was nominated for 12 Academy Awards and won 5 including Crowe for Best Actor and Best Picture. Phoenix was nominated for Best Supporting Actor and didn't win but should have in my opinion. He played evil like no other villain. It was considered his break thru acting performance. As much as you loved this movie (me too), you'd love The Last Samurai.

Another great movie and reaction! The only thing they messed up on was having a German Shepherd as the dog in the beginning of the movie. They should’ve used a Cane Corso (Italian Mastiff) as those were the actual dogs of war the Romans used back in the day. That’s what you should get as your next pup, J. They are such amazing animals! Isnt it amazing that these type of films speak so universally to our soul. All of us shed heavy tears at this ending. ALL of us. Theres something deep within us all that is stirred. The story of Gladiator, in other words, tells us something deeply true that we all feel, in our soul.

@24:20, even as beat down as he is right now, Maximus is still true to himself. He is a man born to lead other men into war. He knows he and these guys are about to die. So he falls back on his training and pulls these rag tags into a unit.
Damn you can see why his men loved him. Also it’s a quick bit of dialogue but one of the gladiators used to serve with him. He knew his general and spoke up.

Great reaction! I love this movie. It began my great admiration for Russell Crowe as an actor. This was when he was simply incapable of making a bad movie. In fact, he was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar three years in a row (a very rare thing) for The Insider (1999), Gladiator (2000), which he won, and A Beautiful Mind (2001). When he’s good, he’s great.
Other notable Russell Crowe movies are L.A. Confidential, Cinderella Man, Master and Commander: Far Side of the World, and 3:10 To Yuma (2007’s remake). All of them are great films.

grew up watching this movie and wish they had done what romans actually did cause the thumbs up part is wrong it should have been a thumbs down because that means good and thumbs up means bad that way it would be historically accurate the director only did it since now a days thumbs up means good and thumbs down is bad for our modern civilization so the director did it our way so we wouldn't be confused by it and question it which was wrong to do should have done it the way the romans did but i love it. And also this is like one of the rare movies that the actor Djimon Hounsou character doesn't die in cause like most of his characters he plays in movies 95% of the time ends up dying
