Hey, a lithuanian here, great video! Thanks! I like North Europe so much, it seems like people here are closer to nature than elsewhere in the sense that we’re not that selective in terms of weather conditions, we appreciate and find ways to enjoy being outdoors any time of a year, summer, winter, spring, autumn, all of the seasons when they kick in, they become distinctive and unique in their own ways and that’s what I really love about this entire region.
Hey, have you ever visited Visby in Gotland, Sweden? It's got a town wall encircled medieval centre, where every summer in august or something, there's a "Medieval week" where people go there dressed up with medieval clothes, with markets and medieval restaurants and everything. Also, on Gotland there are seriously beautiful landscapes with beautiful stacks, especially on the northern connected island called Fårön (sheep island). There are long beautiful white pebble beaches with loads of seastacks, or rauks as they call them. It's definitely one of the more impressive cities/locations to visit in Scandinavia. I live in northern Sweden, but I went to Gotland once and it was truly amazing.
Coming from a Swede. I love Copenhagen, so much to do, cheaper than Stockholm and definitely cheaper than any place in Norway. Plus it's close to Malmö-Lund which are mostly nice too. But Copenhagen is also close to Northern Germany, can just take a boat or train to Hamburg, Kiel, Lübeck or like Danzig/Gdansk or Stettin/Szchszcszhszh...Stettin in Poland etc, people really underestimate Poland as traveling spot, it's beautiful and has come a really long way, the German/Polish bromance is real. Both Oslo and Stockholm are beautiful, but feel kinda isolated from the continent/world. Also Gothenburg should not be forgotten, really nice city to go to with friendly people called Glenn, or Glennings, but only the second best Football team in Sweden, losers. ;) Ofc now I did say many good things about Köpenhamn, but you are still Danskjävlar(!), better than 08or, but still Danskjävlar. With love and hugs, resident Eastern Dane.
I might be telling this bloke off for placing the Baltic States in the wrong' box' but now I really must compliment him immensely! That's the way to go - Baltic States are in Northern Europe (Scandinavia contains only Sweden, Norway and Denmark) and it's a fab area to go. Americans usually skip Northern Europe altogether and know very little about it, so it's great to see the region getting more exposure.
Awesome! There is SOMETHING in that region. Been around Europe but haven't found anything quite like it. I guess the location and influences from all around have made the area very unique. Besides, life is much harder in North which has probably made the people more resilient & rough yet imaginative. And because of that they know how to appreciate every little thing. And in comparison with the rest of the world, the high social status of women (for centuries) doesn't cease to surprise me.
Shut up about Bakken ! We don't want everyone to know about it. Shhhhh!!!! It's a secret - No tourists and No foreigners. Nothing beats all you can eat Danish ribs at Hvit Hest with 80cl Carlsberg. And that white sauce on the potatos. Best soft ice from Bakken too.
Putting lapland on a list of cities/towns is not very fitting since it's a huge area that covers parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia. It's like saying "My favourite city in Europe was Italy." I agree that Sapmí(as we natives call it) is beatiful but dosn't really fit in to this list.
woltersworld Small recomendation then,,, do more than stay around Reykjavík. You see the tourist atractions and the areas that are over flowing with tourists and might see almost nothing. If you do the highway one route you can see quite alot, and depending on when you go, you can catch alot, and i mean alot of festivals. There are festivals for almost 2 months straight every weekend on just the easern part of iceland.
PinkieComics the "problem" is that 75% stay in rekjavík or 3-4 hor drive away from there... Most Dont even leave the town. Also reykjavik aint nearly as old (building wise) as most small towns in europe. We only started building propper houses 80 - 100 years ago
I just found out I'm a good chuck Scandinavian which is awesome! So I'm going to make it a point to travel through the those areas one day. Cheers Mark!
Have you ever been to Aalborg, Denmark? It's a really great city with a lot of things to explore. "Musikkens Hus" is really great. And the harbour is pretty aswell. But i think most people who visit Aalborg is because of the night life there. Jumfru Ane Gade is this place with all the clubs in one street. I know it's not a big city but i still think it has a lot to offer.
Thank you for the Video - very informative! I used to live in Finland for 5 years and still miss this beautiful country. Especially Rovaniemi, where I lived for a little bit over 2 years is just amazing, but Helsinki is of course the "Entrance of Finland" :) Thanks again!
The Vasa - I remember reading about the Vasa sinking and the effort to raise the ship in a National Geographic article decades ago. Glad to see they were successful and now have a museum for the ship.
How do you get around? I really really want to explore the world, Scandinavia especially but It seems extremely expensive. Do you have some kind of trick to get around easier and what do you need to get around?
spiritfinder321. Well don't start your first trip to Scandinavia with Norway or Denmark than. Sweden and Finland expensive but nit as extreme as Norway and Denmark. There are really good Airbnb options in Sweden and Finland and more affordable. Start from Gothenburg because the Western Coast of Sweden is just amazing from Stenungsund down to Halmstad. After like 5-6 days take the train to Stockholm and spend like 5-6 days in Stockholm. 3-4 days are enough in Helsinki and Tallinn. Stay at Airbnb Apartments in Sweden because it Will make your time better. There are really good and more affordable hotel options in Tallinn, Estonia actually. Also make sure to cross over to Helsinki, Finland or Tallinn, Estonia with the Tallink Silja Line ferries because İt's the most entertaining, funniest, affordable, beautiful and best way to travel with (İt's just like a swimming 5 star hotel with parties and it can also give some hotel discounts in Helsinki or Tallinn). Make sure to take the take the ferry from Stockholm to Helsinki or Tallinn because nothing can beat the natural beauty Of a sunset in the Archipelago of Stockholm during mid April-mid June and August-Mid October. I recommend that you travel to Sweden, Finland and Estonia April-25th of June or August-15th Of October. Because than the prices are better and of course better weather and natural beauty as well. That' s a way to make a Northern European holiday easier :-)
insane Kake, you're right but only according to modern views. Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania became known as "Baltic countries" when they first gained independence in the aftermath of World War I. Sometime after World War II the term grew to refer to Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania specifically as they were occupied by USSR whereas Finland retained its freedom. Finland is located in Fennoscandia, though.
Mark Wolters, I'm just curious, what do you do for work? And what enables you to travel so much and live in so many different places? You live the life that I dream of. Ben from England
...My Uncle Fritz from Germany..Visited On Many trips to Finland...Sweden...and Denmark and Norway...He was in Love with them since the War times.....And has a Sister that lived in Estonia...Tallin...
My opinion: Oslo is not that special, just skip it and go to the fjords or the North as well as Bergen. Røros and Ålesund are great towns. :) great channel, Thanks :)
the main thing is to visit these counties during summer its sooooo cold only if you´ve lived here all your life can you withstand it. unless ofcourse you´re going to lapland!!!
I was waiting for st.petersburg to be listed, I almost flipped because I thought you weren't going to. Stayed there for 2 months a few years ago, my favorite place in the world.
cvc Yeah, many people don't include Russia in their Europe tours so I didn't put it higher on the list, but you cannot NOT go. St. Petersburg is amazing.
I have been to all of those cities and also liked them all. In my opinion though Bergen was more interesting than Oslo if i had to compare the two Norwegian cities.
You should rlly visit Ålesund, Norway xD It's great and it's know for it's style after the fire in 1904 and we have some fancy Food there too ;3 Anyway, just a tip if you're going on another trip to Scandinavia ^^
OSLO?! are you serious!! Its dump! There so many city's in Norway that surpass Oslo in every way....stay away, find a nice place to visit. Stockholm on the other hand..awesome!!! Super town to visit, lots to see, friendly people and overall a great town.
woltersworld Then don't go to Skagen :-D The town is practically only vibrant during the summer months. But anyway, it's always a fun experience watching two seas coliding on Grenen (the Northern tip of Denmark)

it was 10 because many people don't put Russia in with Scandinavia and northern Europe, it is kind of its own entity. but it is so cool I had to sneak it onto the list :)
+Bio Joe It is number number 1 in terms of how grand it is, but it is hard to put it high on any list due to the fact it is extremely shabby and unkempt. And with lots and lots of cars parked all over the city center.
Those who love modern architecture will love Riga for the hundreds of Art Nouveau buildings all over the city, with some of the most 'ostentatious' ones congregated in just a few streets.
Great architecture in Oslo ? Where is that ? Oslo is known globally as a city with NO architecture. You got that one wrong pal. Best towns in Norway are Drammen for the Aass beer and Tønsberg for Dolly Dimples pizza.
Rovaniemi rather than 'Lapland' perhaps? Hard to call it a 'city' though. Has Santa, 'Scanburger' which the yanks should like :p and a cool a museum that I long forget what it was called with national history and the Saami people and stuff. A pretty river you could take the wife to and have a picnic as long as it's not winter because fingers would start falling off then. Nice town though.
I totally agree, Stockholm is probably the capital of the world. The nature and the city life, all in one package, with nice people who will give their seat to you at the bus and will bow to you if you say you´re from the mighty USA haha, and yes, I´m from Stockholm with a few genes from Belgium back in the 16th century...
thanks Marcin :) already have 2 little ones and they are expensive as hell :) also, I don't know if you would fit into the kids hand me downs ;) all the best son :)
woltersworld Okay, let's talk about some pocket money dad. ;-D My weight is about 100 kilograms so I could wear clothes after my new dad. :-D But seriously you have a colourful life. It's nice to watch your vids. :)
I want to visit Latvia. I'll add Riga to my list. What are some good things to see there? I especially love suggestions for restaurants, guest houses and bookshops.
Vilnius does surpass Riga in terms of the grandeur of its churches and cathedrals, skyline of Šnipiškes, greenery (there are woods scattered throughout Vilnius) and the landscape, actually possessing some hills, however, I feel like Vilnius lacks adequate street lighting which causes it not to feel safe (I was near the railway station and in Naujamiestis at night). Having said that, baroque just doesn't quite do it *for me*, I prefer the eclecticism and art nouveau of Riga, places like Centrāltirgus, Brīvības piemineklis, Nacionālā opera, Gaismas pils are pretty great, Riga has the best nightlife, so I personally do find Riga superior to Vilnius (that is unless you're going for religious sites). But despite that Tallinn is my favourite of the 3.
+woltersworld you should visit Trondheim. it used to be the capital of norway (it was called "Nidaros" at the time) right after the viking age. it has a large dome where saint. olav was buried. the city has a great history and some exiting places to visit. you could eat at Tyholt tårnet (a restaurant, not good food though), visit Nidarosdomen (its the dome), festningen (fortress) and munkholmen (an island which used to be a prison) its also the third largest city in Norway :) real viking city
Bergen is a city... Bergen has an airport, harbor and train station. This is a tourist guide... From Bergen there are bus-, ferry-, train-, even helicopter-, tours you can take to the fjords. Or you rent a car. It makes perfect sense to recommend Bergen as the place to go.
i've lived in helsinki for 10 years now. it's kind of a weird city cuz it's kind of two cities in one. the first city you come across is the imperial jugend style touristy helsinki which is kind of nice yet kind of bland, tacky. then the other city that was built on top of that one after the city was bombed to the ground in many places in WWII, is the shitty pubs, rock clubs, public saunas, movie theaters, interesting shops and ugly soviet style building blocks. the newer apartment buildings are quite nice but there's a big discrepancy between all those styles (blocky 80s style shopping malls right next to attractive old jugend buildings, wtf?) which kind of makes the city tacky, confusing and unattractive at places. it doesn't seem to have a proper city center that really sticks out. it's not a very welcoming city and it's pretty hard to settle down here...visiting is totally different from living here. the people aren't the easiest to get to know to and they have a kind of hard edge to them often tho they're mostly friendly to foreigners and visitors. it's a hard and tough city which comes from its history compared to scandinavian cities. the architecture itself is kind of off putting in many places which is also kind of its charm, i think.
One day we will get there. We are starting to plan out 2015 and Oceania is in the cards right now :) would be about three months in Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia and a few short side trips, but still up in the air. Depends on my "day job" giving me time off
I have been in nearly all European Capitals and many other cities, also to all mentioned here in the video and I don`t agree with you, Anders Nordic, at all.
+Olle Peining you know I made a great video in gothenburg last year and my mic didn't work! 10 minutes of love hates and what to do of gothenburg... without sound :(
+imbaZarkout I've just recently fell in love with Göteborg and i've only been there twice now. I came back to Finland a few days ago after a week in Gothenburg and i already want to go back. Can't wait to see it in the summer!
I agree,Copenhagen is the largest and in many way most free and fun (from Christiania to the fact that you can buy a beer in any shop for 50cent (75cent if you want a Carlsberg)-Stockholm is nice-a little bit "uptied"and totally expensive.Oslo is a little bit boring (sorry)- it feels like being in a small provincial town..but hey,you don´t go to Norway to visit cities, you go there to see their breathtaking nature..best in Scandinavia!!!
It depend how you define it "hovedstadsregionen" (the area around Copenhagen) contains almost 2.000.000 people and are by far the largest in Scandinavia. But you are right if we look at the cities...and rather funny they all have nearly the same amounth of people S:1.373.000 H:1.300.000 C:1.247.000 and then Oslo:627.000.
svenne -answer. Tromsö Bergen is my top pick. Then the French versaille style 1700es castles of Sweden and the burlesque lifestyle in denmark. It is virually impossible to make a list with fewer than 25 places. From Europes grestest beaches in southern sweden and jylland to icelands hotsprings and danish castles to the best family oriented skiresorts and cruiseships.
Helsinki is totally uncool and hesburger especially one you should avoid at all cost. Helsinki is just a way to go to Tallinn and all those cool cities like St. Petersburg and Vilnius.
Baltic is in Northern Europe, but not Nordic country. Northern Europe countries are -Sweden -Norway -Denmark -Finland -Iceland -Estonia -Latvia -Lithuania -United Kingdom -Ireland

You should visit Trondheim, Norway!
ludlowudus lol and Trondheim?
Yes. And Klaksvik, Faroe Island, also has rain and fog and Wooden houses. Jeez. Trondheim 😂😂😂
It's nice that you're so knowledgable about the destinations! Thanks :)
Thank you for the nice words. I hope your travels are going well too!
Great video again. I have been to all of them except for Norway and I could not agree more. You get pretty good insight into the region.
Thanks!

Marta Mannenbach I lived in Lithuania and Finland so spent a lot of time in that region :) always had fun
Awesome! There is SOMETHING in that region. Been around Europe but haven't found anything quite like it. I guess the location and influences from all around have made the area very unique. Tivoli in Copenhagen is not the worlds oldest amusement park. Bakken north of Copenhagen is several hundreds years older.
Shut up about Bakken !
We don't want everyone to know about it. Shhhhh!!!! It's a secret - No tourists and No foreigners.
Nothing beats all you can eat Danish ribs at Hvit Hest with 80cl Carlsberg.

They did and the museum is really cool. I go every time I visit Stockholm, its that cool :)
Tivoli is only the second oldest amusement park. The oldest is Bakken, just outside of Copenhagen.
I'm from Finland, and in my opinion the best city to visit in Northern Europe is Stockholm.
+ToastedCigar Have you been to any of the other cities?
Stockholm is pretty much the capital of Northern Europe
lol Stockholm turning to Pakistan
Hi mark, am a regular to your channel, just curious .....how do you get this much time to travel?? :)

Wolter, sorry, but what is your language?
Love your blog!!
Lappland (Lapland) is no city....;)
I think you also should visit Rovaniemi above the arctic circle.
Christian Juntunen maybe we could get a documentary into the life of Santa Claus
lapland is nice city, and yes, if anyone asking kallingrad is part of baltic so it makes st.petersburg count
I was waiting for st.petersburg to be listed, I almost flipped because I thought you weren't going to. Stayed there for 2 months a few years ago, my favorite place in the world.

sultanfahad great city. I am heading there next year to film and am very excited to get back.
woltersworld
Great! I would be extremely glad to see you. Please do let me know.
Stockholm became stockistan
In my opinion, Stockholm is the most beautiful city in Europe
You mean islamaholm?
nice!
Nobel prize museum in Stockholm was interesting.
Iceland would blow your mind...
I think the Faroe Islands are very underrated compared to Iceland and the Isle of Skye in Scotland.

I agree, I recently paid my 9th visit to Copenhagen, if I can secure a job then I'm moving there, England is going to the dogs.
Really surprised st. Petersburg was 10 most have it as 1 or 2

Copenhagen at number 4???? For me it would probably be at number 2 or 1. But good video tho :)))

If magnificent palaces are your thing, St. Petersburg has the rest of Europe beat. Including Paris.
Lapland isnt city its one of the counties of Finland

Okay, let's talk about some pocket money dad. ;-D
My weight is about 100 kilograms so I could wear clothes after my new dad. :-D
But seriously you have a colourful life. It's nice to watch your vids. :)
So in other words, visit the capitals and the second biggest cities
You make me mad because Riga,Latvia should of been 4th 😠😠😠😠😠😠😠😠😠😠😠😠😠😠
Latvia isn't even part of Scandinavia
Sonjawkwilsson It's Scandinavia & Baltic...
You think that Riga is better than Vilnius???
You wrote Tallinn wrong ( you wrote Tallin)
1.Copenhagen definetly
i wouldnt recomend going to Bergen to see fjords, there are 1000 times better places you can go, for example Hardanger, Geiranger, Nordfjord
Mathias Alexander Hidalgo thanks!
Mark, you should go to Indonesia! especially our cities like Bali, Jakarta,Bandung. you gonna love the food there
One day we will get there. We are starting to plan out 2015 and Oceania is in the cards right now :) would be about three months in Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia and a few short side trips, but still up in the air. Depends on my "day job" giving me time off
Lappland? On a list over CITIES? Christ...
Lapland*
In English, maybe, but in ALL Scandinavian languages, it's double p.
Ok sorry i was just told that when i went to Finland by my grandfather
the best looking cities by far in europe: St Petersburg, Vienna, Paris One word: Class.
I have been in nearly all European Capitals and many other cities, also to all mentioned here in the video and I don`t agree with you, Anders Nordic, at all.
Tallinn*
Jukkasjärvi is fun
wow you ranked Tallinn as 3, funny how locals dont appreciate those things that appeal to tourists
I love Tallinn, even if I spelled it wrong, ,seriously hate my spell check :)
hey,did you just not mention gothenburg, sweden,i'm insulted
+Olle Peining you know I made a great video in gothenburg last year and my mic didn't work! 10 minutes of love hates and what to do of gothenburg... without sound :(
baltic states are in north Europe
Finland is not a part of Scandinavia
No Gothenburg :OOOOOOOOOO
+imbaZarkout I've just recently fell in love with Göteborg and i've only been there twice now. I came back to Finland a few days ago after a week in Gothenburg and i already want to go back. Can't wait to see it in the summer!
I am Norwegian and i disagree with this list. DENMARK should be nr1 followed by Sweden then no
I agree,Copenhagen is the largest and in many way most free and fun (from Christiania to the fact that you can buy a beer in any shop for 50cent (75cent if you want a Carlsberg)-Stockholm is nice-a little bit "uptied"and totally expensive.Oslo is a little bit boring (sorry)- it feels like being in a small provincial town..but hey,you don´t go to Norway to visit cities, you go there to see their breathtaking nature..best in Scandinavia!!!
Tallin actually written with two n like so: Tallinn
8 dislike : Eminem , 2pac , nicki minaj , boc b , ceza , tankurt manes , vice , cihan-i flow.
No kiruna
Is "cool" the only adjective he knows?
You’re way too much of a tourist and not a traveller. You literally just list all the tourist traps of each country.
Such an American tourist :p
Its pretty bad.. Gothenburg is 9999 times better than stockholm
Not at all! Stockholm is unbeatable
Aldrig sett så mycket främlingspack som i Nordstan.
Oslo at 2 place??? Boring city
Helsinki is totally uncool and hesburger especially one you should avoid at all cost. Helsinki is just a way to go to Tallinn and all those cool cities like St. Petersburg and Vilnius.
Visby should be on there...
OOH the deformed fetuses in jars
cvc that was an experience seeing those...
baltic europe is eastern europe, not north europe
