But in the absence of any sources about them being fired, the Onwards folks shouldn’t just speculate about reasons. And in the face of an absolute explanation from the principals involved that is contrary, this self informed analysis comparing things to what happened with TopGear seems a bit empty. The only way I could buy them getting fired is that the P1 with Matt and Tommy came about very fast (see incorporating docs filed with Brit govt) post announcement. If this was a planned exit, one could argue the paperwork would have been done. However, if this was a contract expiration situation (as is normally the case with modern media), it could just be explained as they wanted to file outside of a contract period so there was no question about impropriety.

The best way to get away from that corp mentality is to start it on their own. Plus, if they were doing so well, why would WTF1 force them out? What’s most likely is that it was contract time and Matt and Tommy could demand much more compensation than previous and WTF1 was not prepared to give in, so they bring on 5 relative newbies who are cheaper to pay.

About the Top Gear case, I do think that even though the trio’s own chemistry is unquestionably the main reason why it worked so well, when they reunited in Grand Tour, some magic was still lost. There were definitely more major factors that contributed on their successes, like the teams who worked behind them, those writing the scripts, making ideas or the visual and stuff.
One thing I did see missing is that the trios dressed too well in GT (no joke). I think one of the reasons why TG was so popular and funny is because the hosts looked like some bloke from your local pub instead of those super stars that you could never relate with.

I'm pretty sure by looking at the homage shows to The OG Top gear on RUclips done by other presenters now, The comments section is populated with people who watched TG and now are older but not alot of new people.

I think what made WTF1 that popular is that despite bein possibly number 1 in terms of sub growth, they kept having that "casual fan" attitude about things, never trying to appear like professionnal journalists, making comedy out of the drama instead of taking F1 so seriously, they were basically like educated fans having a fun time with the audience whether the race was good or bad.
Most F1 channels are very focused on having the "right" opinion, on dissecting rumors, on surfing on every bit of drama with their own take. And then theres the chemistry, Tom, Matt and Katie (which you didnt name but shes a BIG part of the group imo, wish she'd make a channel with those 2) are a good group in podcast, it doesnt feel like theres a battle between them for "who should speak" like on many other channels.
Last thing is that it was a group effort, and I prefer watchin multiple people talk about a race event, with multiple takes, than ONE guy or just a bunch of dudes repeatin more of the same. For example Tommo is gettin very popular but his talky videos/streams about news sounds more like "I'll just say whatever for an hour on this news bit I could cover in 2 min because people are sendin money anyway" (his edited videos are great though). One thing WTF1 had over everyone is bein genuine and respectin their time.

    • @DeathBlocks
      @DeathBlocks Год назад +4

The fact that WTF1 is as successful as they are just baffles me. I can't stand their videos and I don't get how anyone enjoys it enough to be a fan. The style in terms of visuals, video structure and composition and even tone of voice and ways they talk just feel exactly like those kind of random channels who make "fact" list videos that aren't reliable at all. Those kind you used to find a lot more often way back before proper factual content came around. Also I don't know who started with it first but the fact that Driver61 and their thumbnails can be very similar style is kind of funny since they are so different.
But what I will give them is that they did their job really well. I don't like their style well at all but it is something lots of people want and they did it right.
And I agree with your starting point in the casual attitude being great. It is part of why I don't watch much of Tommo's stuff anymore, he used to make me feel like I sat next to a random guy at a bar while some F1 highlights were playing and we ended up having a few beers and discussing something we didn't expect someone else to be a fan of. I don't dislike him now though, just lost his unique feel for me, it would be like if Aldas started making videos that are less than 15 minutes long. And that is also why I still really enjoy F1Word's style of a guy just talking to us and not being afraid of sounding silly or being wrong just cause he has hundreds of thousands of viewers.

It’s not out of spite or protest, I just know that it’s impossible to be even remotely close to the same show with those 2 gone & are they not even keeping Katy too?! Doesn’t matter now, they effectively killed that show the moment those 2 left. There’s just new F1 content that happens to call themselves by the same name of a beloved group of friends that put out F1 fan content, who is unfortunately no more. R.I.P. WTF1. If Tommy & Matt make their own content elsewhere, I’ll give it a go. Unfortunately, just like The Grand Tour was to TopGear, it’ll still never be the magic that was the true WTF1… :(

It is no wonder Harris stayed because he was perfect for this kind of role, ex racing driver up for a bit of fun. I don't think it is a case of corporations not understanding it at all. After all, its not like they just appoint a random person to manage the show (well that would happen at times).
It is more them making a decision that they aren't willing to keep working with the hosts, like with Top Gear where the personal dispute was worth more to them, or the hosts wanting more than the company is willing to pay or more creative control etc and in all those cases they know they are taking a risk. BBC knew losing Clarkson, Hammond and May would very likely destroy the show. Or they could realise that firing hosts is a very big risk but they would rather make less income from the show from that loss than have higher expenses because of salary demands (this can end in the same profit so same thing).

Which was initially successful... but even airing on BBC1 hasn't halted the ongoing decline in viewership for the show.

With Rooster Teeth, and particularly Achievment Hunter, I think part of the problem was how they introduced some of the new talent. After Ray left we started to see more of Jeremy, Matt and Trevor. This was alright because they had been working for the company for a while and had appeared a few times on camera. Sure there was some feelings of "who are these guys, I dont like them" from the community, but it was more of a slow transition, which gave us time to acclimate to the new faces. As the years progressed however, the company started to bring in new faces seemingly from the blue. This lack of time to get used to the new faces, the higher turnover rate, and the increase of easy to make, cookie cutter videos sounded the death knell of an institution.

Same thing happened with the Cracked RUclips channel too. One day Cracked just decided out of the blue to shut down it's video production side of the business and fired everyone on the RUclips channel, including their main hosts Katie, Soren, Daniel and Michael.
The channel lay dormant for a couple of years, before Cracked suddenly decided to start making videos again one day, in a similar format as before but with completely different presenters. Their videos were getting millions of views with the old team, but now they're lucky if they get more than 100,000 views. They regularly get less than half that number.
It's a shame too, because Cracked After Hours was one of the best shows on RUclips. The 4 original presenters had a great chemistry and bounced off each other really well. One of them (Daniel O'Brien) actually went on to be a writer on Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, and if you're an old-school Cracked viewer you can sense his presence behind some of the jokes John Oliver delivers, especially when the joke is pop culture or internet related.

But in my opinion, WTF1 is a channel made by fans for fans and having presenters that would be considered 'underqualified' (though I'd argue they're perfectly fine) gives that relatablity and a different feel to channels like Autosports or The Race's official YT channel. And that's where I think WTF1 differs from TopGear. TopGear was changing their formula from 'three bimbos that liked cars' to 'this is a car, this is why it's fast' but in the case of WTF1 it feels like a passion project with friends and still feels like a passion project with friends. So as long as that feel of it being a passion project between friends, WTF1 will flourish in the future. But Matt and Tommy will be dearly missed.

Matt’s the reason I stopped following WTF1. He spent too much time making cheap, disparaging jokes out of Williams and Kvyat, especially blaming the latter for Grosjean’s crash.

This is exactly what happened to a small football channel called “HITC Sport” when the host was basically the entire channel. Then he got bought out, got fired and started his own channel keep doing what he did before and taking the majority of the subscribers (including me) with himself. Like you said it here, we watch because the hosts look genuine and bring a unique energy, not because of the name of the channel.

Clarkson wasn't fired. And he punched a employee in the face over some sandwiches. What was the BBC to do? Ignore it? It got the shortest straw of everybody involved but the least choice.
I like TG and clarkson as many do but it was a shitty brainfart and it was HIS fault, nobody elses.
Just because you like someone doesn't mean to just ignore things like that. Interestign to Read Richard Porter's (long time writer for TG and GT) really cool behind the scenes Top Gear book "And on that bombshell". I fully expected him to play the event down once he got there, or find excuses for Clarkson. He REALLY didn't. He lays it on thick and fast on Clarkson for the thing itself but also the shitty way he dealt with the team in the aftermath. That he does that (Not the daily mail or the Guardian) goes to prove that it wasn't trival or a joke. Wilman and Clarkson needed some serious convincing (and likely money) til he rejoined them for the Grand Tour.

Sorry WTF1 you lost me. Might check in every now and again to see if they make improvements but I doubt I’ll be watching any time soon.

Regarding Top Gear, after some experimenting with the hosts they settled on a trio that works really well and carries on the spirit. It's a good show.

For every die hardcore FWTF1 fan there are a 100 new F1 fans who don't know the old hosts. But we'll just have to see. I do feel they'll have to redo the whole style of the channel, the podcasts and other creator driven video's will inevitable suffer a great deal quality and viewer wise. Hope the lads will be able to get an own channel running and do it all over again 👍

No one would argue that the combination of Clarkson, Hammond, and May made Top Gear what it was. Unfortunately Clarkson couldn’t get out of his own way and brought the whole thing down. Maybe I’m missing something but that doesn’t seem to be the case for WTF1 so the similarities in what happened to the two shows seem pretty superficial.

WTF1 today sill has over 1 m subscribers. Problem number 1: where the old crew pumped out 3 or for vids a week in F1 season the new WTF1 is making about a quarter of that nowadays. Barely no podcasts, they tried something with funniest tweets but dropped it after a couple of races, no F101 content. Problem 2: it may say they still have a million subscribers, but they ain't watching the content. Views have tanked to may be a quarter of what Matt, Tommy and Katy generated. But for advertisers. Meanwhile: P1 with Matt and Tommy yesterday reached 400.000 subs on youtube and they have a far bigger following on twitch. And the content is huge. They even got F1 drivers in front of the camera like Carlos Sainz, Charles Leclerc and last Daniel Ricciardo. In short: WTF1 is indeed WTF1 in name only.

Feel sorry for the new talent at WTF1. Already on the back foot and fighting a losing battle before they’ve even started. I’m happy to give them a chance, and it’s the company who should have to deal with the backlash, rather than the people who’ve said yes to an opportunity of a lifetime and one they’d be silly not to take, calling their ability into question before they’ve even started is unfair imo, especially when the frustration should be directed to decision makers. Hopefully they do well with it, but it’s likely the damage is done.
