Ruth Underwood is a national treasure.
TRUTH
international
ABSOLUTELY!!!
That's the truth DG. 100%
I wrote the same exact thing. Not wanting to copycat, deleted it after seeing this comment. funny how we saw the exact same thing.
Ruth Underwood is one of those rare people whose beauty, kindness and generosity of spirit just shines just out from within. A rare talent and an even more rare human being.
Professionally speaking, Ruth and Frank were meant for each other.
Absolutely!
Ruth is so ridiculously underappreciated she is a musical treasure...her contributions to Franks music are as important as Vinnie and Vai and Bozzio but her instrument not being a common popular one she doesn't get nearly the magazine covers and coverage. What a musical powerhouse I'm constantly amazed by her performances listening back to FZs catalog
Wouldn't it have been wonderful if she'd done a solo album?
The Black Page sounds gorgeous on the piano.
hearing her play it on piano, I immediately became convinced that after he heard Bozzio master it on drums, Zappa's first thought was "Ruth could do amazing things with that on the marimba". Zappa's little explanation on _Live in NY_ *almost* says as much...
I think black page was prophetic for Jazz from Hell.
This woman is amazing both as a musician and as a person.
She's also got a beautiful smile! Great woman!
Ruth breaking into laughter after finishing the piece is such a testament to the strength of Franks music. After decades it still makes his most dedicated musician feel so much by playing it.
When Ruth said "And what I'm hearing was put on this earth for me...it was for me!" It gave me chills and brought tears to my eyes simultaneously. So glad these two got together.
I loved hearing the piano reduction of this amazing piece of music that will absolutely live on.
existe completa solo piano en la version 40th annyversary Zappa in New York
I want to hear this full performance. Sounds like she mastered it in one take. Not entirely surprising, since she probably rehearsed it every day in her sleep. What an incredible musician.

@@elsarovira2985Oh wow nice -- ¡mil gracias!
She is bad ass!
Not only percussion, BUT, pianist.
I'm in heaven.
Peace on earth.
An awesome musician (Ruth), and Frank is nothing short of revolutionary composer. What a beautiful piece. And way too often overlooked, beside the rhythms, the melody is pure magic.
A lot of people didn't "get" Frank, but the fact that Ruth, being such a wonderful person, and talented musician (along with quite a few others), chose to hitch a good part of her career to performing his work and was happy to do so, is all of the validation that I need to listen to it. Ruth is almost always seen to be smiling either performing his music, or discussing her career playing for him.
There's an interview where she plays "Inca Roads" for the first time in years and if she made a mistake I didn't catch it.
@@garrettbaker2320she says that she made 3, but who knew?
Ruth Underwood demonstrating the fantastic melodic and rhythmic scope of almost all of Zappa Music.
Wish Ruth could appear at least just once with the Zappa plays Zappa band.
Too dangerous to their careers. She'd show them up!
@@plasticdadaii8225 Never thought I'd hear myself say this, but Dweezil's musicians have generally been of a higher standard than Frank's.
@@BlackWhirlies They punch the clock and never variate. I understand why for both reasons. Just for the ability to hear it live with new sound systems is good enough.
@@plasticdadaii8225 I saw Frank 7 times and he was always amazing (my favourite was the '79 band with Vinnie) but the last ZPZ show I went to was nothing short of jaw drop stunning.
@@BlackWhirlies I don't think so. Many who played with Frank are legendary artists of the highest caliber. My most admired musician from Dweezil's band is Sheila Gonzalez.
she's the best. I cried like a baby.....
Me too
me too
I hope more and more people arround the world will discover Frank Zappa during the next 20 years.
It took me 1/2 my Life to find his music. But now i think he s the greatest composer of the Past 80 years.
What told me the story about Frank Zappa was when his earliest work was rejected by the LA Philharmonic. It was at that time that he got busy. REALLY BUSY. Thank you Ruth.
"It was put on the earth for me; just for me"
How many of Zappa's pieces were written solely because he had one musician who could play and understand that stuff? If you ran a public poll on "women in rock" how many mentions would Ruth Underwood get? And yet it is this aspect of Zappa's music that excites contemporary players. This clip is the only performance of this complex piece online that makes sense to me.
That's Ruth 💘 ha ha That's truth !
I would love to hear more performances of FZ material in this stripped down style.
Yes! The music was exactly for you! I’ve loved it for the last 45 years!
That was glorious.
It was put on this earth for me Just that statement is emotional. Thank you, Ruth.
someone, somehow has to convince Ruth, the family trust, Dweezil or whoever to make a record called "Ruth Underwood plays the music of Frank Zappa" i don't care if she plays it on marimba, piano or little kiddies toy xylophone with the coloured keys!! her feel for and deep understanding of Franks music just blows my mind!
I love Ruth Underwood s playing on Roxy and Elsewhere its Legendary.
I can think of only two women musicians who have completely blown me away.
One is Barbara Dennerlein.
And the other is Ruth Underwood.
Both are the pinnacle of musicians worldwide.
Imagine having to play that and NAIL it every single night, on tour! Happy birthday, Ruth!
What a talent. My youth in the late 80s was spent listening to FZ and this incredibly talented lady. Just sublime.
Ruth still has the exact same captivating yet shy sexy smile she had when Frank would bring out her personality on stage & i just love it ,what a fantastic multi instrumentalist this woman is .
Black Page done on the piano. Beautiful
“And ladies & gentlemen...on marimba...Ruth Underwood & her two friends!” Frank always loved teasing this modest master musician, who may have had some remarkably beautiful physical attributes, but her musicianship was unmatched in her execution of his complex compositions. She’s a beauty, and a brilliant musician. Also a fabulous dame. *Ruth...if you read this..it’s me, Pete, sending you love from across the years. 💗🎶💗
Perfect. She is.. You are perfect.
Ruth.
So beautiful......just all of it!
I Love Ruth Underwood, George Duke, Ainsley Dunbar, Vinnie Calliutto, Flo & Eddie, Warren Wotssizname, Ike Willis & the rest I can't recall their names right now & ESPECIALLY the Catalyst that put them all together, Mr, Frank Zappa, Genius!!
OH!!! Captain Beefheart!!
I AM THE SLIME!!
She's simply an ace of a person...
Who in their right mind would put a dislike to that video? Some people are strange!!
Ruth Underwood's smile is as bright as a rainbow. :)
The 1974/75 band, of which Ruth was a member, was one of Frank's greatest line ups and that's saying something.
If you can just change your date to 1973 because that's when I saw that band at Wembley. Best Zappa band for me too.
I just listened to "One Size Fits All" for about the 500th time. Her work on that is mind blowing. As is the rest of the band's.
Truly an amazing musician!
When I think of Zappa, I think too of you, Ruth
Amazing woman with amazing talent and ear.
Wow just Wow the Black Page Sounds soo different just played on the Piano.
Simply wonderful!
Lovely Ruth❤❤ That's Ruth😊
We love you sweet Ruth 🧡
just wonderful
Beautiful as ever. Frank's music wouldn't have been what it is without her.
Thank you
Wonderful. Beautiful. Difficult.
Ruth, this is for you! And we will listen and enjoy!
I think her amazing talent played a big part in the commercial success of Zappa's music.
Ruth Underwood is a National Treasure.
Thank you, Ruth Underwood, for all the inspiring moments while working with Frank Zappa. When I feel like I'm locked in my head and running in circles while composing, all I have to do is put on "Apostrophe" or "One Size Fits All" and my head is free again after half an hour and I'm sitting in front of my speakers grinning blissfully.
Wow. Only just found this. Always loved Ruth and her skills. I imagined Joni Mitchell singing over the BP piano piece. Wouldn't that be a beautiful duo. X
LEGENDAS,POR FAVOR!!!!!!!🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Awesome, well said. Love Zappa, love how Ruth portrays it in music and words
Thanks for your excellence!
wonderful...
Amazed as ever by Ruth Underwood!
Beautiful and supremely talented
sounds so much better with Keys then just Drums
Black page #1 and #2
Beautyful
Ruth and Frank are great both!!!
Such a brilliant passionate musician!
Best thing about zappa to me
BEAUTIFULL MUSIC MADE FROM AND FOR BEAUTIFULL PEOPLE
Ti adoro....
I'd love to hear Ruth wax factually and nostalgically on the electrification/computerization/keyboardification of percussion instruments. FZ once said that he got fed up with getting musicians to play his notes. A computer, he said, allowed him to tailor the notes and keep in perfect time. What would have happened if FZ were born today and never needed a band?
How nice... Wonderful.
Love this documentary and love this scene, but I was sad that they didn't get Terry Bozzio anywhere in it, especially this scene. I mean, Zappa wrote the Black Page initially to stump Bozzio, so would've liked to hear him dish about it. Still a good movie though.
fantastic Ruth
Ruth is such a beast. Still a god-tier musician, just like always.
“Go Ruth, baby”.
The Black Page on piano sounds exquisite......No offense, Pickle Boy.
love
Nothing like Frank Zappa and nothing like Ruth Underwood.
best bit of the documemtary
*Happy Birthday Ruth❤️🎉*
How can you not love Ruth??
brilliant!
Hang on. From memory?
I have to go and sit down.
The film is NOT available everywhere, unless your everywhere is the USA.
I wish she would play with dweezil that would be unreal
I think that all my favorites are about a pancake breakfast. What does that say about me

Holy shit, Ruth......
