  • And now for something completely different. Here's a set of Swedish tunes that I learned from a band called the Lowland Paddies - with whom I'll be on stage in a few weeks (exciting!).
    The first one is a "slängpolska", which is a polka with 6 bars to a line instead of the more common 4. The second one is a polska, which (to me, at least) feels like a mix of a polka and a waltz. The Paddies based it in the version by Swedish band Väsen, who do a really wonderful rendition of this tune. In fact, they also wrote the tune "Josephine's Waltz" (Josfins Dopvals), of which I have a version online as well.
    Anyway, enjoy listening! Comments are welcome :)

    I'm really mesmerised by your harmonica playing. I have never heard it being played so convincingly as a lead instrument, sounds as good as a very good melodeon player. I didn't know that harmonicas could even do this! How you you maintain the fiddle pulse and really fast but clear runs of multiple notes.
    It is always blues harmonica players who are shown off as the virtuosos of the instrument but they only every play around 3 notes in a slow and muddy sort of way.

    I dont know if you just type wrong or missunderstand but the "slängpolska", "Byss-Kalle" is not a polka, it is a polska and the beat is 3/4, not 2/4 as it would have if it had been a polka. I wish i could play like you, by the way!

      As far as I understand it, both polka and polska are supposed to originate as Polish rhythms. I have no idea what these Polish rhythms would be. Maybe it's a bit like Danish pastry, which the Danes call Wienerbrod (Vienna bread). It all comes from somewhere else. Even if it doesn't.

      polska, polka, polkett, pols and mazurka originates from poland in the swedish folk music. The differences are which beat emphasis lies. (Except for polka which is 2/4 and polkett in 2/2 i believe). Originally polska is in 9/8 but is most common to count to 3 since it easier.

    Thanks for sharing something that's not from the Scot-Irish catalog. The music world is a big place, and it's nice to hear from other parts of it.
    Your bouzouki playing seems to be getting better and better.
    Loved the dynamics towards the end.

    Sounds great Tinj! when i look at the back on this video, I can see quite a few guitars ...how many instruments do you play ? Best.

      @TijnB42  9 лет назад +2

      Thanks! Let's see.. there's three regular guitars, two bouzoukis, one mandola, one banjo and one bass guitar. Whether or not I can "play" them depends on your standard - I can get some sound out of any of them but not all as well as what you hear here :)

      Kettil Engberg Thanks! The harmonica is in G major. I learned the tunes by ear from a friend of mine, so I don't have any notes.

      TijnB42 Okey, I'll just have to try by myself then. Keep playing swedish stuff, it's really fun to hear the music of my ancestors being applied outside of our borders!
