Slängpolska efter Byss-Calle, Eklunda Polska #3 - Harmonica + Bouzouki

- And now for something completely different. Here's a set of Swedish tunes that I learned from a band called the Lowland Paddies - with whom I'll be on stage in a few weeks (exciting!).
The first one is a "slängpolska", which is a polka with 6 bars to a line instead of the more common 4. The second one is a polska, which (to me, at least) feels like a mix of a polka and a waltz. The Paddies based it in the version by Swedish band Väsen, who do a really wonderful rendition of this tune. In fact, they also wrote the tune "Josephine's Waltz" (Josfins Dopvals), of which I have a version online as well.
Anyway, enjoy listening! Comments are welcome :)
Great tunes and great playing. Most impressive :-)
Wonderful yet again. Nice to see you working in your native traditional music into the rotation and every bit as exhilarating!
I'm really mesmerised by your harmonica playing. I have never heard it being played so convincingly as a lead instrument, sounds as good as a very good melodeon player. I didn't know that harmonicas could even do this! How you you maintain the fiddle pulse and really fast but clear runs of multiple notes.
It is always blues harmonica players who are shown off as the virtuosos of the instrument but they only every play around 3 notes in a slow and muddy sort of way.
Très bonne interprétation comme toujours. Merci à toi et au plaisir de rencontrer dans le sud de la france?
I play the harmonica and you make this song so beautiful and give me hope to hang on with my harmonica with you in the lead ! your free style is very beautiful . Real talent like yours is rare Thank you for this performance
BRAVO!!
Lovely playing!
Vasen are awesome........you definitely do these songs justice......
This is gold, SOLID GOLD!
Greetings from Newfoundland & Labrador, Canada! Your harmonica playing is the best I've heard. Please keep the video camera rolling!
Great playing!
Awesome. Love the sound of the Bouzouki!
This is sooo good ! thank you !
This is GREAT. Thanks for putting in the time to learn to play this stuff, and for posting it.
You are a godamned hero.
Super-Awesome!!!!!
wow wow a faking real talent brilliant playing can't speak highly enough of what make is your bouzouki? please
Nice, man.
I dont know if you just type wrong or missunderstand but the "slängpolska", "Byss-Kalle" is not a polka, it is a polska and the beat is 3/4, not 2/4 as it would have if it had been a polka. I wish i could play like you, by the way!
As far as I understand it, both polka and polska are supposed to originate as Polish rhythms. I have no idea what these Polish rhythms would be. Maybe it's a bit like Danish pastry, which the Danes call Wienerbrod (Vienna bread). It all comes from somewhere else. Even if it doesn't.
polska, polka, polkett, pols and mazurka originates from poland in the swedish folk music. The differences are which beat emphasis lies. (Except for polka which is 2/4 and polkett in 2/2 i believe). Originally polska is in 9/8 but is most common to count to 3 since it easier.
aaaaaaaaamaaaziinnggggggg!!!!
Thanks for sharing something that's not from the Scot-Irish catalog. The music world is a big place, and it's nice to hear from other parts of it.
Your bouzouki playing seems to be getting better and better.
Loved the dynamics towards the end.
Fantastic!
Sounds great Tinj! when i look at the back on this video, I can see quite a few guitars ...how many instruments do you play ? Best.
Thanks! Let's see.. there's three regular guitars, two bouzoukis, one mandola, one banjo and one bass guitar. Whether or not I can "play" them depends on your standard - I can get some sound out of any of them but not all as well as what you hear here :)
Great stuff, Tijn!
I think I've heard Vicky Swan and Jonny Dyer play these.
Große Klasse! Vielen Dank, LG Rose
Awesome! What key is the harmonica in? How did you learn the tunes? Do you have any tabs or notes you could share? :)
Kettil Engberg Thanks! The harmonica is in G major. I learned the tunes by ear from a friend of mine, so I don't have any notes.
TijnB42 Okey, I'll just have to try by myself then. Keep playing swedish stuff, it's really fun to hear the music of my ancestors being applied outside of our borders!
NICEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
so nice song , well play. Let me know if you come play in Québec
Thanks! I've had several people ask me this over the past few years. Some day I'm coming over to play there for sure ;)
I learn that songs from your video and i have a question : what is the song after the part B of Eklunda Polska ? the score i found have 2 parts of 8 measures, If you can help me to find the score, i will really appreciate. :) thx.
Heya, the second version listed here is pretty much identical to what I play: thesession.org/tunes/15784
1000 x THX
Hi! nice playing. It´s called a Polska, not Polka. It´s in 3/4 with the emphasis on beat 1 and 3.
Do you ever play Slangpolska with Itchy Fingers?
+harp baby We're working on it! ;)
yeah...
you really need to get yourself a hohner flexrack, those cheap harmonica racks suck
