      There are french interviews with the dog's coach on YT, they explain that for this particular scene they trained the dog to play dead first by teaching him how to lay down on the side, then by letting his head feel heavy, then the body. For the eyes it was CGI and the vomit part there was a tube beneath the head of the dog, and someone just had to push a button to make all the nasty stuff come out of the tube.
      You can find the videos explaining the training labeled as [ "Anatomie d'une chute": on a rencontré le chien Messi qui joue Snoop dans le film ] or [ Les coulisses d'Anatomie d'une chute : Messi, le chien à la Palm Dog ] But there are no English subtitles only French.
      Hope my answer helped ^^

    His performance reminds me of Jed, who acted in films like white fang and the Thing but was in tons of movies while he was alive because he was uniquely talented. Most dogs have their tails cgi'd because they can't stop wagging them, but he had a strange stillness about him that made him stand out. This dog has that same thousand yard stare.

    • @someembarrassingLPs
      @someembarrassingLPs 10 месяцев назад +10

      i immediately thought of jed when watching this. it's absolutely the expression in the face and the body movement. many dog actors are very well trained but you can tell they are depending heavily on the trainer and due to the precision of commands they tend to look a bit "mechanical" in their movement and faces. most people can't tell and so their acting work is perfectly fine but not exceptional. jed and messi have a way about them that feels like they are interpreting the instructions given by the trainer in their own unique way, the same as a human actor might do with a script.

    • @Crakerlak
      @Crakerlak 9 месяцев назад +6

      @@someembarrassingLPs
      Sorry to reply three weeks behind, but something else Messi here definitely shares with his "phenomenal animal actor" predecessor is his complete lack of looking at the camera. The one time in The Thing where Jed looked directly into the camera, it fit with the story and actually worked to add tension to the scene and make the audience uncomfortable - pushing toward the common compliment Jed was given by his trainers and costars that any move he made, that would be "just something an animal actor will do" to almost every other animal in film, seemed to fit perfectly with the character he was playing.
      And now, throughout Anatomy of a Fall, Messi's never making eye contact with the camera either. He's fantastic. There are dogs in Horror that can't be focused on directly when playing dead, especially for such long shots, because they can't keep still or make it as believable as Messi managed. Whether that's because he's a Border Collie and Jed was a Wolfdog, or because he and Jed are/were actually aliens disguised as Good Boys, us humans will never know. But they definitely have a special talent for the roles they've been given.

    Guys! I found out today he didn’t win an Oscar but he did win the Palm Dog Award at Cannes 2023 (which has been around since 2001) so fret not he is indeed a internationally acclaimed award winning Good Boy 🏆

    I haven't seen a dog this good at his job since Jed from John Carpenter's The Thing.

    Before this, the best dog acting for me was in the Thing, when he’s the monster in disguise and is stalking the halls.

    the most impressive, for me, is him hitting all the marks during the long shot. Like stopping, maneuvering relative to the camera, looking at people etc. 1:26 like thats difficult for a person...

    Having had a blue merle border collie I can say no dog is as capable of acting, undertaking tasks or understanding instructions as one of them (if food is a reward).
