Not only in 81 but happened repeatedly in the 80s, many great songs charted poorly or left out. I think that the managers are to blame for not having the vision on when to release a song in order to reach a better position on charts, based on who are you competing with, the season of the year and the social conjecture. Foreigner Waiting for a girl like you could have reached nbr 1 if released on another time. A song I remember in 88 that was terribly released was Endless Summer Nights. It was released in winter time and with a sad and cold video, instead of being released by the end of July or August to reach top of the charts by September, with beaches and palm trees as a video, dont know, a personal point of view.
Coming off the post-disco demolition mess of 1980, 1981 is bascially the same but only mildly better. MTV launches this year, which will shape the way for music going forward, but that won't take hold until the year after. Not much else to say other than it's the same as the year prior. Dying 70s trends are still hanging around. Still, we're getting more 80s signature staple song's thanks to New Wave becoming more prominent and a few other smashes people start defining the decade with such as Jessies Girl and Bette Davis Eye's. All these songs really take Me back to My youthful days ! 1981 was great yr in music ! It’s really hard to believe it’s been 40 yrs ago ! I was in My early teens & now I’m 53 yrs old going on 54 yrs old ! In the fall of 81 I was going into the 7th grade that yr ! The 80,s rule !
So many great songs and therefore lots of competition in terms of charts positions. Many songs placed in lower positions transcended through the years versus others today totally forgotten and only known for those who lived on those years as teenagers.

Queen's Another One Bites the Dust, Barbra Streisand's Women in Love, and Kenny Rogers's Lady all peaked in 1980. One song you missed was Private Eyes by Hall & Oates, one of two songs that kept The Rolling Stones from having their 9th #1 hit with Start Me Up, the other song being Arther's Theme by Christopher Cross. Two other notable songs you missed were Olivia's Physical, and Foreigner's Waiting for A Girl like You. Physical kept Waiting for A Girl like You from being Foreigners first #1 hit.
Private Eyes finished #44 in 1982. Billboard used a November 1-October 31 calendar for the year end charts at the time. Physical was #1 for 1982 and Foreigner was #19 for the same reason m. The calendar used by Billboard meant they hit their peaks in the 1982 chart year.
@Angstinyourpants Same thing with hearing “Cars” and “Heartbreaker” in 1980. 80s didn’t truly start till 82 but 81 was a more advanced towards the 80s compared to 80.

Music is subjective, there is no such thing as "real" music. Anyone that says this is clearly basing it on nostalgia. Music didn't change, you just outgrew it. The music from the 80s was great, but let's not act like it was perfect. It wasn't. This cycle of saying "today's music suck, back then music was better" is nothing new and this cycle will just continue until the end of time. And it's not dead, either. There is good music today as well as bad music, it's nothing new. Ironically, a lot of today's pop music are using sounds of the 70s and the 80s (heck, a literal 80s song was a big hit a year ago), so it's pretty hilarious that people are saying the music sucks. Enjoy the music from your time period and let the current generation have theirs. Btw, I do like a lot of the songs here, I just needed to point all that out.

This is really not the Billboard Hot 100 songs of 1981. I listened to Kacey Kacem count down the top 100 songs of 1981 at the end of that year in 81 and Another one bites the dust was actually the #15 song of 1980, it was on 1981 chart for only a few weeks. Also Woman in Love was the #14 song of 1980. It was only on the top 40 in 81 for about 4 weeks. This chart has changed the positions totally from the actual radio year end countdown by Kacey Kasem directly from the Billboard charts.
Hard to believe this was 40 years ago. I still listen to these songs on SiriusXM 80’s on 8 and the Yacht Rock channel. Best music ever!
Blows ya away, doesn't it ? I was thinking WOW 30 years, then I saw you comment and in disbelief I went "HF 40 !?" 🤣 rofl

How the hell would start me up not make the list? Song hit #2 I believe. Maybe it missed the cuttoff and made 1982s list, much like ONJ's physical.
Nope, the only song charted by the Stones in 82 was Waiting on a Friend at position 94

Not sure if you guys gives a damn but if you're stoned like me during the covid times you can stream all of the new movies on instaflixxer. Been streaming with my brother during the lockdown :)
@Gary Shane Yup, I have been using Instaflixxer for months myself :D
I was in My early teens back in 1981 ! I was 13 yrs old such great memeries & this was real music not cookie cutter ! Better times ! As well too
All these songs really take Me back to My youthful days ! 1981 was great yr in music ! It’s really hard to believe it’s been 40 yrs ago ! I was in My early teens & now I’m 53 yrs old going on 54 yrs old ! In the fall of 81 I was going into the 7th grade that yr ! The 80,s rule !
Sheena Easton...oh yes, great singer and heaps others here. Thanks for sharing.
A really great year in music. So many memorable songs that sound so good even today.
I think today they sound even better
I was watching and thinking how woeful it was. Maybe 20 interesting songs out of 100.
gracias por encontrar el tema musical que por 40 años buscaba
Gracias ❤❤❤❤
So many great songs and therefore lots of competition in terms of charts positions. Many songs placed in lower positions transcended through the years versus others today totally forgotten and only known for those who lived on those years as teenagers.

Morgan Fairchild, yeah, that's the ticket
40 years ago!! Wow! Times flies.
Ha 4561z my number i hav a grandson hendrix so yup the beat goes on peace if anyone remembers that
Bette Davis Eyes still sounds great today.
Journey lindos éxitos hasta ahora
British music sounded more 80's that year. American music was still strongly influenced by the 70's
Tenía influencia de la música disco pero con elementos más electrónicos y modernos la música disco real ya estaba muerto en aquella época.
My favorite album in rock history was released in 1981, Def Leppard. High N Dry
Nice songs
You know when the ‘Breakup Song’ and ‘Hit Me With Your Best Shot’ sorta sound edgy, that you’re still in the 70s.
@Angstinyourpants Same thing with hearing “Cars” and “Heartbreaker” in 1980. 80s didn’t truly start till 82 but 81 was a more advanced towards the 80s compared to 80.

It was really a great year in music
What a great year for popular music. Sadly, it was all downhill from here, and a decade or so later, real music was all but dead.

What are the odds of having two similar song titles in the same year. Morning train 9-5 Sheena Easton & 9-5 Dolly Parton.
I mean Sheena Easton had to change the title of the song so people don't get it confused with the other song.
Dolly Parton's "9 to 5" is better!

1981 had so many large hits...with a 10 week stay...even with a 9 week stay at #1. Nothing close to that happening in the 2nd half of the decade.
1981-82 even had a song that spent two months at #2: "Waiting For A Girl Like You" by Foreigner. Never got to #1.
@@billslocum9819 True, most other years its an easy #1.
@@rawn4203 Three songs basically blocked off half the year by themselves: "Bette Davis Eyes," "Endless Love," and "Physical." I think only four other songs topped the charts from summer to New Year's.
Part of the reason is sales were terrible in the early 1980’s and Billboard used sales as part of determining the Hot 100.
@@billslocum9819From August 15 until the end of the year those four songs were the only songs at #1. Jessie’s Girl was Number One for the first two weeks in August. So only five Number One’s from August 1 until January 30, 1982.(Physical was #1 for four weeks in January as well)

Left out "Everybody got to love sometime" by the Korgis
You left out rock songs. The Who. Billy Sqiuier, Pat Benatar and Journey had more songs. I love most of these songs.

AT 40 used there own year end charts for a period of time in the 80’s and 81 was one of those years
