The pictures may have been AI, however they looked cool and definitely fit the theme.👍
Those AI guys have a hell of a lot of gear. I must join them.
Right? I didn't know I needed headphones that are half telephone until now.
They even have an HF setup with a Yeawocom XT-2-V-W
I really enjoyed this video. Thank you so much for producing it. I remember sitting in my radio shack in Northwest Ohio listening in to some of these nets back in the day.
The illustrations still capture the atmosphere quite well though
These are recognizable as A.I., but have much art in it
Tried to listen to their net but, never was able to hear them. And Wayne Greene was a STRANGE person! He encouraged strange stories for 73 Magazine lol
Wayne definitely marched to the beat of his own drummer.
Thanks for the effort you put in...always and interesting viewing...
I quite enjoyed the pictures.
This is an appropriate use for AI in my opinion.
This is the only use for A.I. in my opinion.
agree
Interesting, this was a bit of radio history I knew absolutely nothing about.
In the late 80's I was on my ship, we were in our home port and I was out on deck listening to my RS DX440 radio and caught some of a MUFON Net. I was unable to join as I did not have any HF gear with me at the time. It was about thirty minutes long and then just went off air. I listened for the rest of the week, but they were only on tuesday and thursday at the time.
Peace
I'm surprised Art Bell wasn't involved. Thanks for another great video. 73
I forget his call now, but I know Art Bell had an amateur license. I’m pretty sure Bell had MUFON people on commercial radio show. The other natural would have been Ray Briem. From time to time Briem would patch in HF amateur conversations to his commercial radio show. The last I heard Ray Briem’s show was back in the 1980s. I believe Briem’s radio show originated at KABC in Los Angeles.
@@wtmayhew yes, according to Wikipedia his final US call sign was W6OBB.
@@JustAGuyYaKnow42 Thanks for the reply with his call sign, appreciated.
Wayne Green was one of the first ones to push the idea of an Amateur Radio UFO Net. I remember a column he wrote for Electronics Illustrated in the July, 1968, issue (he was their Amateur Radio columnist back then). He suggested 14.250 and 3.900 as net frequencies. The 73 article that Lewis references came out that same month in Wayne's 73 Magazine. Why he suggested different frequencies in each article, I never understood. But, hey, that was Wayne...did anyone really expect consistency? 😁 Great video, Lewis! Brings back memories...
This was a fun topic, and the background imagery helped give my imagination a jumping off point while I listened.
I think you have a good idea of how to use AI tools responsibly. I wouldn't mind it used this way for future videos where your own footage doesn't fit.
Diggin the artwork. Interesting about the collaborations. Art bell prior to art bell. Very cool ty for the interesting stories, as always. I like the ai stuff. It has a place, for sure
Great content as always! I think that AI content works fine to set the mood when there's a lack of image material or appropriate stock photos.
The AI images were funny to look at.
At one time, the government was going to release information on UFO next year for about 10 years running.
How fun! Great episode, Lewis, and not one I was expecting. I never knew there'd been (and there still is) a UFO Net, but now I'll deffinitely try tuning in. Cheers!
Thanks for posting this video, it was great to see my old friend Joe N1JS. He was a great guy. I had an interest in UFOs, because I grew up in South Texas during the Great UFO flap of the 1950s. I was also aboard the USS Essex during the 1967 dead-in-the-water UFO incident.
Joe got me into the Massachusetts MUFON group. They needed a training instructor to train the UFO investigators for the Boston area.
Joe had the telephone answering machine for the local MUFON UFO hotline in his Ham shack! It was an interesting time. I still have my old MUFON ID card!
Back in the 1950s, one George Hunt Williamson claimed to have made contact with UFO occupants via short-wave radio (although Ouija boards were also used). He later wrote a book about his contacts, "The Saucers Speak". If I could find my copy, I'd tell you more...
There is no aliens and no invisible man. We know that because we made them up.
I thought the AI was great!! Loved the classic animation style..
AI is NEVER good. It is a crime against human workers
I was gonna just listen in the background while I did chores. NOW I HAVE TO WATCH THE AI!!!!!!😂😂😂
2:48 you can never have too many clocks on the wall
Stellar video again man. Missed ur last video. Ill check it out .
Are you going to make a video about bbc r4 going off 720 khz
BBC's 198 kHz LW transmission will be shutting down too. The Droitwich LW transmitter was supposed to shut down this year, but the BBC delayed the shutdown as there's still some electricity meters that use Radio Teleswitch Service that's transmitted with the LW signal, that switches metes from daytime to nighttime (off-peak) mode. They have to be replaced first. They can't get amplifier valves for the transmitter, not made any more. Would be nice to know about the history of the LW transmitter.
Great Video Lad
Bless Up
I love the AI images.
I like how he can present this completely straight. No way I could do it without making fun of them.
Good luck to anyone wanting to restart this net on 14300! 🤣 Thanks for the enjoyable video though, and the AI pics were great! For what it's worth I did see a (briefly) Unidentified Flying Object in July last year, while out in the Australian bush. Very mysterious, until I worked out that it was the booster stage of Chandrayaan-3 re-entering the atmosphere. Still, very cool to see it. 73 Richard VK2SKY
Wow Lewis... say what you want about AI, but those images were all so beautiful and captivating. They made for a very atmospheric backdrop to this very interesting story. I've always been very impressed at your resourcefulness when finding images/video content for episodes that are, by necessity, mostly just audio. Keep up the great work mate.
'There are things in this world we will never fully understand.. UNDERSTAND..'- Back Zaggins Interesting video man, I'd love to see more videos around anomalous events in context of your work or the downright weird if that's possible would be class, anyhow always enjoy your videos much love man !!
So when everyone now has very good cameras in their phones no one has seen anything to be documented. Wonder why?
There is lots and lots being documented on phone.
Problem is that we also now have the ability to fake things like never before, and so if anyone produces an interesting photo then it get dismissed as a fake, AI, etc.
The truth is out there and it has almost certainly been captured in a phone.... but which one is it?
Even mass sightings don't prove anything. Drones can account for a lot of course).
Including all the military jets and ships and all those sailors on the ships.
Statistically there should be tens of thousands of different alien species in milkyway that could have spammed machine probes to every star in millions of years of time even if they move at fraction of lightspeed.
@@feeatlastfeeatlast5283 ya weird how people ignore that when there was even a congressional hearing and the military admitted its a real phenomenon
@@feeatlastfeeatlast5283 or are you saying they would have filmed it with their phones? Its daytime and they had trouble tracking them without high powered binoculars, military targeting autotrack cameras. also, its likely a security issue to take photos of these and keep them
Awesome video
Thank's for the good there Lewis! 🙂
Outstanding reporting. Fascinating. Thank You.
Nice animation, took me back in time. As usual, always enjoy your videos. Cheers from the U.A.E.
Excellent info Lewis! FYI.....in Great Britain the UFO net is run by Fred Scuttle! 😃
Whenniand where is the net please as I am on ARUFON and a member of Lapis Blackpool de M0JFE
Hello from Riverside, Ca USA
Hello from the San Fransisco Bay area. It has been a while since I saw any UFOs. It became less common when Moffett Field got defunded.
Very interesting topic, thanks! AI is a tool and I think you used it brilliantly here. The important is to clearly signal images in order to make sure that no one thinks this is genuine imagery. Keep up with the great work.
Being licensed over 60 years, now I am
80, never heard of amateur UFO nets,
before this video.
Actually, today 14, 300 MHz, is now
mainly the Maritime net.
I met Wayne Green in 1980 up at his
73 magazine location, which then
was in Peterborough, NH. W2NSD,
having moved from Brooklyn, NYC,
where he started his magazine, he
would not change his call, Never
Say Die, even though he was now
in the First call district, which you
don't have to do anymore, when
moving to another district in the US.
73 de W2CH Ray New Hampshire. 😊
I also caught that the "UFO Net" is now used by the Maritime folks. That "band plan" at 5:00 is funny. Where's the freq for "old guys complaining about their bad knees?" 😊
@pablod6872 Thanks 😊 In the 90's there
used to be the Liberty Net on 3, 950 Mhz.
Thanks RM. This One was Out of this world*****
you could make a video explaining the history of radio spirit boxes to communicate with the dead and how it works ( Ghost Hunting ). that's if you run out of radio based content for videos.
Yes I’m working on this topic
You should make a video about long delayed radio echoes.
Thank you for the vidja.
I understand the hesitations regarding A.I. usage.
In my opinion this is a useful and splendid opportunity to have A.I. be an actual boon.
Whatever image generation stuff you are using turned out some "appropriate" UFO and radio operator pictures and I think they added to the telling of the tale.
Peaceful Skies.
I really enjoyed the AI for this particular discussion.
Bravo ! Thumbs up
Love it!
Nice one Lewis 👽👽
Lewis, don't apologise for the AI, it worked well. An enjoyable video. I spent most of it wondering about the detail you must have typed in to get the pictures just right.
I am also not a fan of AI. However, these generated images sparked the imagination. I enjoyed the images.
Great, and thankyou for the info you provide. I do love the old pics of a radio ham sitting in front of his kit. Takes me right back as a kid on how I loved to sit in front of my cobra 148 gtl dx. Must have cost my dad a fortune in the day. The dx shack was a dream. TY.
I will keep my eye out for similar cassettes like in your photo. Ive never seen any but very interesting.
man nice hearing some familiar call signs . i need to get back to being active on hf . thank you for keeping my interest going Lewis ..... cold war fueled my interest in radio your keeping the hobby alive
I'm watching this on Thursday night at 11 PM EDT, and 3950 kHz LSB is pretty active at the moment. I need my mag loop antenna to pick up some of the signals. They're not talking UFOs at the moment, though, talking instead about current truck prices.
Interesting story. But now we can communicate by the internet, and the mystery has simply got deeper!
Very interesting.
Lewis top of the day from Poulsbo, Washington
Beautiful artwork, who did this?
You’re joking aren’t you? Lol
An interesting vid Lewis, I had no idea that there was a connection between ham radio and UFO’s, love the AI pictures too. De M0HLG
Before phone camera's were invented there was loads of photos of ufos but now everyone has a camera theres not that many photos..
And the photos we do get are blurry dots which could be anything.
there are still plenty of photos, many even from military sources, but i'd wager whomever is controlling these craft are well aware of the proliferation of people having high quality cameras in their pocket and being much more sneaky about how they operate
(I really don't believe in Alines) but what if they reacted to our tech and we are actually living in a zoo?
@@loz9324 There are still plenty of blurry photos of shapeless splotches in the sky. Sorry to hear the aliens have to be more careful now!
It's not so easy. The one time I saw a "pinball" ufo and had a decent camera in my hand, autofocus played up - I did, however, get a couple of good shots. But on pretty much any other occasion, I had no phone/camera or the event passed too quickly to mentally process and react, the "wtf?" effect. Plus all my sightings took place 2004-2016, nothing before or since. You can't legislate for this stuff.
This was such a cool video! Please do more videos about obscure HAM history / goings on.
I'm studying for my foundation license right now and would love to join a net here in the UK that are doing something cool. Probably not this topic though, so if anyone has any suggestions of other nets, I'd love to hear them please!
Have you noticed an up tick in unlicensed ham operators? Or more noise traffic then normal? The word on the streets is people are taking back bands and frequencies . Our gov and every others with a regulatory body for comm has limited our abilities to use them for advancement.
I don’t mind the AI as long as it’s relevant and not obtrusive
Have been wanting to get into HAM as I used to play with CB stuff all the time playing around while truckin all over. My guy that did my CB equipment was a HAMMY , and used to work at the small port of entry here in Ks. I would watch and he would talk , and showed me how the new computer aids in contacts. Bet many were contacts out there , not sure what his call numbers were now , but it was Eldon Wright , Norton Ks. Lost him a few years back. Not long after a lightning bolt got one of his antenae. He had them and wire strung all over. He lived right next door to the local radio station with an open field between them with one tower on the far end close to the house , that set in a lower area. Sure miss his wisdom. And UFO/USO , all things paranormal has been an interest since around 4th grade at least , now 57.
When we were kids in the mid 70's, my friend's father had a monstrous radio setup and we used to tune in into all kinds of weirdness with it, late at night. We were both into UFOs, the Bermuda Triangle and other phenomena (as 11 year olds) and, every now and then, pick up some strange stuff we thought we were hearing UFO communication. Close Encounters, Star Wars, and other movies had hit the theatres at the time and was, no doubt a contributor to our fascination with ETs. This got me into radio electronics, later in life.
Also in the 70s and 80s my dad was kind of into the UFO stuff, but he wasn't hardcore. He also wasn't into radio. But his best friend was a hardcore UFO nut. I always enjoyed watching In Search Of as a little kid and later on X-Files. Love the idea of flying saucers and stuff. They make for great stories even though I don't believe in it.
For some reason I focused more on the words made by the AI. It's a shame that AI can't even spell "kHz" correctly in some instances, not to mention that in one poster read "UFFO".
Just a fun fact: MUFON was also touched upon "The X-Files" TV-series.
Being here in southern Indiana not far from Ft Knox back in the late 80s and early 90s we had a bunch of sightings of strange lights in the sky and in fields . I saw a few myself and the 3 light triangle once . The local police chased a lighted object more than once (Look up UFOs over Corydon Indiana) It made the national news After all was done It turned out to be some sort of quiet helicopter but the military was tight lipped to local and state law enforcement . was fun for a wile put us on the map . it seems a LOT of UFOs are seen around military bases in the US .
AI - as my old dad used to say "Bullsht baffles brains"...
Seriously this needs to be documented and submitted to the Fortean Times
And perhaps somewhere out there an Alien Radioastronomer tries to make Sense out of it.
You didn't mention tinfoil, for making the special hats needed. 😅
Great stuff, and this is one of the times that AI images really fitted in.
YEAH HAM RADIO STUFF
Enjoying these videos , AI gives a nice touch if used correctly. -cheers
wow very interesting amazings
Apparently AI thinks hams always operate in their underwear. 😢
Look up AM Radio personality Art Bell's "Outer Limits" show. He broadcast from Nye County, NV and I would be shocked if he had not had some connection to these organizations.
He started Coast To Coast AM, plus also had Dreamland and Midnight In The Desert.
those fantasy radios pictures look interestin, for example that in 11:14 , would be fun if they would make a real radio in that look.
14.300 is a marine frequency in the US as far as I know
14.300 mHz is for anyone who wants to use it. No one owns a frequency. First come.....first served.
There’s a maritime mobile traffic net that operates on 14.300 but they don’t have a special claim to it.
I wonder how many UFO themed QSL cards there are?
It must have been fun sitting around the warm glow of the radio in the dead of night freaking each other out with spooky stories of the dodgy student proctologists from outer space. Bet there were plenty of jumpscares when suddenly the Mrs is standing behind you wondering when you're coming to bed. The not so fun part would be eventually coming to the realization that you've just wasted a decent portion of your adult life searching for horse$#!t.
what ai image creator was used for this imagery?
We have our share of…interesting people, don’t we? :)
Obscure? Guess its time to wake up!
14.300 seems like a good place for such things.😂
well.. when the ufo thing was started the current 14.300 thing wasn't on 14300.. the current 14300 thing started on 14313
I liked the AI pictures honestly.
Personally I found the glaring errors in the "AI" images rather distracting (e.g. handset and headset being used simultaneously, a bank of phones only one of which had a handset, the myriad cases of word salad, etc.)
I thought this was brilliant - as ever I enjoyed your content and pulling all the info together was great ! If there was something like this now in the UK I would be really interested ! Maybe something for 80m.
Off topic but I'm keen to know if Radio Hams' call signs are reallocated once they are stopped bring used.
I ask as in the 1960s/70s my Godfather based in Luton, Bedfordshire was often on the airwaves and his call sign (is that the correct terminology?) was G3TLE.
Please advise, anyone who can. Thanks 👍
That call is presently not assigned.
Contact the Radio Society of Great Britain. Someone there will be glad to help.
When I said someone at RSGB can help I meant they can let you know the regulations involved and how you may be able to get the call assigned to you if you get your license. I am in USA so I don't know the specific rules there.
That's great information.
Thanks very much 👍
The rules on this changed very recently, but we're all treading carefully. Basically you can now apply for any callsign that is not currently allocated, as long as you have the licence level for that type of callsign. A lot of hams feel that it would be inappropriate to take over the callsign of a departed ham ("silent key" or SK). According to the old rules, you could apply to Ofcom to take over the heritage callsign of a departed family member, but under the new rules any unregistered call is fair game.
@@59withqsb12 I would agree that my Uncle's callsign should remain as his but if someone thinks they can fill his shoes, then I suppose they have a right to try.....
The AI was really suitable for this vidjao. Looked good mate!
Excellent AI graphics Lewis, some of your radios looked fascinating...Thanks
My comment was removed. Must have said something I'm not supposed to talk about?
Not seen it mate try again
IMHO nothing wrong with some AI imagery when talking about historical radio events such as this where photo video or other supporting products do not exist.
Wayne Green was really a fascinating character, and if I may be bold, a kind of personality that we seem to have a lot of in New Hampshire. It must be the water. He also was an early computer enthusiast and he founded a number of computer related magazines, including "Hot CoCo" for the TRS80 Color Computer. Made me smile to hear Francestown mentioned, as I lived there for a few years as a kid. Wayne became something of a crank in his later years, but he definitely was a passionate advocate for amateur radio. 73 Lewis, and thanks for this video!
Out of curiosity, what AI do you use to generate images?
This AI chap as a good imagination, those sets look so good very impressive.
All good mate keep up the good work
Nothing from Art Bell?
14.300? lol. wonder if they were getting as much crap as today
Listen shoosh can you hear it..
I wonder if the 80 meter net was ever jammed by W2OY! ".....Don't care how wunnafull you thing you are with the phonetics... We don't want-sha, no-how!"
If you must use phonetics, don't call. Class A only. Are there any class A operators left?
Nothing wrong with the AI other than you don't need to hire an artist. However an artist may have got the text right. Out of interest which AI engine did you use?
I think these AI images look great and really added to the video. Nice one 👍🏼👍🏼
