    I think people forget that Chrissie won 5 GS on grass as the AO was still grass when she won it. She got to the Final every year she played there,+ her Wimbedon record is the most consistent of any player.
    It really needles me that she's not given the credit for changing her game + upping her fitness when new threats came along.Few player have been truly top flight for 18 consecutive yrs, it's amazing, her win ratio of .90 is still the best ever in open tennis. She was in a class of her own.

    I still love Chrissie. She really is a diplomat, and influenced more players, than any other, I think. Inspiring, gifted, mentally strong, feminine, gracious, strong, focused, indomitable, the consummate pro'.
    She is the sponsors, event managers, press, photographers, and fans ideal package. :-D

    @Lynz261 She actually took 5 GS titles on grass, she took 2 AOs, when it was still grass. She also took other grass court titles like Eastbourne, but I know you mean 3 Wimbledon's. Most players would be happy with 5 Slams in a career but to do it on your 'weak surface' is testament to how good she was. Her baseline accuracy has never been emulated, it was deadly+she was the master of the lob and stop volley.

    @Lynz261 Its true she never went out in the 1st round of any tournament and still holds the record for wins on clay. She won the AO + W'don on grass when everyone said she wasn't a grass specialist. 5 GS titles on your worst surface not bad. Martina picked her tournament more or their head to head could have been very different. The Williams sisters will never come close to emulating her. She has grace and tenacity.

      I'm happy to be proved wrong there.
      In the 9yrs since I left that comment; they've both outplayed anything I imagined.
      Serena, is def the greatest & her longevity, is nigh on sublime.
      Not to detract from any successes, but Chris Evert's era, was a far cry from the athleticism & strength we see today.
      All any player can do; is be the best of their peers. Evert's consistency & win ratio are also iconic.
      I'm lucky to have seen such stark variants of the game. Graff was incredible, but Serena, has taken it to a whole new level. 🍀🌠

    @sandrovic1970 Well said. Nobody else has ever played 18 consecutive Wimbledons, only once failing to reach the last 4 as you say due to illness. She never beat Martina in a final here but that's cos when she was winning it Martina was already out or not playing. Their head to head would've been very different if Martina had played more on clay, or if they'd met in the French more often. Chris still won 3 times+2 Oz Opens which is amazing for someone people say is not a grass court player.

  • @ShipsKat
    @ShipsKat 13 лет назад +2

    @Lynz261 The 1st 6 times (I think) Chris played Steffi she beat her, Steffi just got too strong and Chris was in her twilight then as her mind was on having a family and she's an all or nothing lady, she was never gonna give 50%, so she rightly retired while still in the top 4 or 5, still reaching semis+finals. She went on to have 3 boys that she's deoted too it was sad her marriages failed but she is a 100% devoted mum/mom.

  • @ShipsKat
    @ShipsKat 13 лет назад +1

    @jubbadupa She played 18 consecutive Wimbledons only once not reaching the last 4 (+that was due to illness), that's an extraordinary record and she still has the highest win ratio of any player in the open era. Players today pick and choose their tournaments more because there are more of them and the yield is greater.

      GeorgeHenryThomas your talking about comebacks for steffi in the realm of being a set down or a set down and a break down and so on.. EVERT has come back from multiple matches in her long (longer than graf's career by the way) MATCH POINTS DOWN!....
      71 u.s. open saving 6 match points
      75 u.s. clay courts saving 2 match points and being down 7-6, 5-0
      80 wightman cup saving 2 match points being down 5-1 in the third set
      76 virginia slims of san francisco saving a match point
      75 virginia slims of houston saving a match point
      79 easbourne saving a match point
      these are the only ones i can think of offhand..

      I'd say Serena is the comeback queen- not a fan of hers, but you have to give her her due....Steffi is a great champion, but not to factor in Monica's absence- during which she won 6 of her slam finals, is a huge disservice to Monica.

  • @ShipsKat
    @ShipsKat 12 лет назад +2

    Evert won her 1st 6 matches v Graf, the next 6 went to Graf as she was getting stronger and reached #1, but you can't say Graf dominated Evert their overall H2H is Evert 6- Graf 7 (the 7th was a w/over as Evert was injured so there was no play).You have to say they were pretty evenly matched at 6 all in matches they played,granted there was no real rivalry,none of there being close.As Chris was wound down,Graf was in her prime.
    It wan't til 85 that Martina dominated.Evert has time @ #1 til 85.

  • @ShipsKat
    @ShipsKat 13 лет назад +1

    @sandrovic1970 I know everyone always says Martina was invincible on grass but they forget the AO, where her record was patchy. I remember the 87 semi, Chris was No2 seed + Martina 1 so they ought to have met in the final, Martina just edged it. The 88 semi was worse tho, when Chris had saved 3 match points and everyone on Centre court including Martina thought she'd leveled to Deuce but it was called out,!Only time Chris never shook umpires hand.If only they'd had Hawk Eye then,it was in!

  • @ShipsKat
    @ShipsKat 13 лет назад

    @RaleighNC306 I agree Chris actually had some really good spells, I think for the 1st time in her career she was thinking about other things and Steffi won the big points mentally, it was so sad to see her go out on a double fault, but at least it was Centre Court against the World No1.

    • @lenwelch2195
      @lenwelch2195 2 месяца назад

      I prefer to think that double fault helped her to realize she had nothing left. You don’t want to.o retire when you still feel capable of winning against the number one or number two if you have a good day because. That good day could happen in a slam event in Sf and or final as in AO 88 where she beat Martina and lost to Steffi . Steffi was up 6-1,5-1 and Chris fought back winning 5 games in a row to 6-5 but lost second set and the match in a tight tie break. Winning 5 straight games gave her incentive to play while 88 season, played a great Wsf against Martina losing 7-5 in third in 88 and 6-4 in third in 87. Too bad she had stomach flu when she woke up for her Sf against Steffi in 88 Sf at open. I suspected her weakness of strength when she squEaked by Maleeva winning that third set in QF.so when Chris lost three finals in spring of 89. Had bad losses to Hana in beginning of 89 losing 3-6,7-6,6-0 that shook her a bit and her reaction in third set was over losing control of the match in second set. You don’t know you’ve had enough until you’ve had enough. That double fault against G,raf represents that when she looks at center court now that she played as long as she could .

      @Volker7578 6 лет назад +1

      No way. I don't like Graf and I would have loved Evert to win that match, but Graf was way better. And Evert describes it very well in this interview - Graf had the confidence as a number one and that's why she did win those important points.

      Nobody remembers that there are 15 years between them. A 34 yo against a rising 19 yo. Chris (and Martina) era was ending and Steffi's leadership was beginning. It's impossible to compare champions of different ages. Anyway I think that women tennis reached the top with Chris and Martina. Nobody else as them.

    I like to correct them + you're quite right to say she was beatable on grass although it was by far her strongest surface. Evert was an all-rounder but for some reason people still say she was weak on grass, I think players like Sabatini were weak on grass! For Evert to be seeded lower than Gaby @ W'don was insane,but she proved them wrong by reaching SF or better 17/18 yrs

    @kevin12061989 Your the one that is ridiculous, there was far more depth and skill in the late 60's and in the 70's, then there was in any era of tennis, yes the game is more physical because the girls are much bigger and stronger. And the raquets make it a bashing contest, not a tennis match. Chris Evert didn't play 20 touraments a year for 20 years, she played 18 years on tour, and played the most touraments a year from 74 -76, from 20 to 22 years old, and only play over 20 tourmaments in 74.

Five great players, that's all now, everybody in the top 30 can beat anyone, the game is so much more physical now, we both know it, Evert wouldn't succeed today by playing that much, she'll get injured all the time, ask Clijsters or Jankovic

      Kks Boumbox you don’t know a thing about tennis. Tennis is a mental game . Power does not equate with greatness. The rackets of today allow even the wknd player power. Greatness in tennis means how well they respond to pressure. No one was as mentally fit as Evert. So many of the women can win today because not one of them beside Serena is mentally strong evert would do just as well today if she lived during this time
