Great video as always - thanks Chris. Couple of things: 1) sorry to hear about the stuttering - my only suggestion is to treat it as a form of immersion, i.e. you never know when you are going to have to race with a burst appendix or some other unplanned distraction! 2) I think it's really sad how 'dead' rF2 is these days - I thought it was a great sim, invested lots into it, and now I feel with LMU it has been abandoned... glad you are still extracting (some) fun from it.
rFactor 2 worked good for me when I started sim racing in 2017. By 2019 it was undriveable due to stutter and freeze / lags. I quit rF2 for good after a 30+ seconds screen freeze during a league race and this was after, like you, I also tried everything to fix it - for weeks. Nothing but pure frustration. So now i have a couple hundred bucks in DLC just sitting unused because rF2 is a dumpster fire and the devs have abandoned it to work on LMU.
Yeah I was thinking the same, that it’s an old title now and unlikely to get much development now LMU is taking priority. Gonna try an SSD install instead of my current HDD, but it’s probably the last throw of the dice.
its crazy you can run acc smoothly but not thos.. im sure its connected to be a non true 64 bit app running on a single core.. ssd may well help... ive randomly had yhese kind of issue in AC during LFM races but in my case it was the VR playing up, still super frustrating lol
Works well for me, even on a 2 year old laptop. Fun game, all these driving games are fun. Don't take it so seriously, it's a "Game" that random 3rd party bedroom developers have been making untested content for over a decade and we all download all this content because most of it was free, then we complain the game freezes. ACC has limited content that has been tested by professional studio, same thing for iracing etc etc.. just enjoy it. I remember when sim racing games in the 90's booted up with DOS commands.. so it's a blessing now.
I jumped on rf2 for the first time since April and had a great time. I don’t think my pc is particularly high end but I didn’t notice any glaring issues in terms of screen freezes. Lime rock was fine for me but I do have a lot of my settings turned down
Thank you! It’s reinstalling to my SSD as I write this reply. All my lesser-used sims are on the HDD, but there’s every chance I might have initially had rF2 on the SSD when I first bought it. Which might explain the difference! I’ll let you know. Thanks for the suggestion 😃
Yeah, I see why your not using rf2, those screeen freezes would do it for me too, funny thing is once in a great while I get them running AC! Don't know why, anyway, hope your ssd install cures it for you, thanks for sharing with us!!!
Yeah it’s very frustrating, particularly when I know that it USED to run without a blip. I ditched it for a long time because of it, but now it’s bugging me that I can’t get to the bottom of it!
yeah i get em some times in AC but note you always get them when people load in to a server in AC.. so if your doing practice and some one joins you get a freeze but i have noticed them randomly as well
I wanted to up my RF2 VR performance, similar issues. I did a full minimal reinstall of Windows and gpu driver etc and then Steam and sim games all in a separated SSD. Performance was notably better vs crudded up Windows install
I solved this problem halfway. turn off windowed or framed mode and turn off all programs with overlays. RF2 has no stutters only in fullscreen mode (in my case). I started fullscreen and let you know. LMU has the same problem, but in fullscreen it works great.
Interesting. I’ll check this out later. I suspect I’m running in Windowed mode (because I used to use a RaceLab overlay). I removed the overlay as part of my attempts to fix it, but I don’t think I ever returned to Fullscreen view. Thank you! I’ll try this later 😃
This was race with quite some mistakes, and with that nasty crash between other two drivers...ouch! You did what you could, having the constant stutters surely wasn´t helpful and it sure can ruin our race. I also have this game, but it didn´t convinced me much to be honest, on the other hand, LMU which is made by the same guys, surely is an interessant simulator that its getting better by the day. Keep up the good work and see you on your next race mate 👍👍
Yeah, that was exactly my problem during those first few laps. There has to be something simple in the settings I’ve missed, but it feels like I’ve tried everything.
Yeah, it’s not like there aren’t plenty of other options for sim racing alternatives, thankfully. I just had that itch to do some more BTCC, which rF2 does really well. Tbf my online ranking is way too low to be eligible for BTCC races currently, and with all the DNFs I’ve had trying to sort the stutters out, it’s only getting lower 🤣
Exactly why I stopped playing. 4090, 32GB Ram, NVME 2TB, and 13900K. The random stutters makes this game unplayable. Very unfortunate as I purchased content after their update and truly enjoyed the game. I get the stutters in both, single and multiplayer.
There are several. I was using RaceLab, but the overlays are one of the things I’ve ditched to help ease the performance issues. But you’re right… rF2 HUD is terrible 🤣
Have you tried turning off "Special effects" I believe those are the sparks, a frame rate killer. That was added a couple years ago and I remember having problems until I turned that off. I have also turned off "Environment reflections". I have no stutters with rF2 and my PC is nothing special. Hope that helps.
Good shout! I haven’t. I’ve dialled them down to ‘low’ but not switched them off. If it’s just sparks and stuff, I can live without that. Will give it a try, thank you 😃
Plenty of users run rF2 without and stuttering, lag, or tearing. It’s not the game, it’s your set up. Try setting in the graphics config panel, Mode to borderless, and Sync to software.
It’s 3 years old. Good point about the install… it was on an SSD but I’ve reinstalled it back onto the HDD. I will try it again on the SSD as a comparison 👍
@@chrisrogerssimracing I'm having issue like this in AC but all my other sims run great. Beats me. I know my PSU is on it's way out so that's my next option.
Yeah, not what you want. Took me 2-3 laps just to understand when/where the stutters were, just so I could anticipate them and adjust my driving accordingly. But by then, I’d lost a lot of ground. Very hard work after that.
Yeah, it technically has been retired on my PC for a fair while because of it, but I just had this niggling urge to want to race some BTCC cars again! Very frustrating that I can’t get it quite right. But it’s not like there aren’t loads of other sim options out there, that all run like a dream.
I don't understand the problems you're having running the game. My PC is nowhere near top tier (r5 5600x and rtx 3070) and I only sim race in VR (Quest 2), so in theory it should be harder to run. Yet with OpenComposite, I have the graphics pretty much maxed out and running a solid 72 Hz
Funny thing for me is I never had stutters and freezes on my old 1070/6700K but as soon as I upgraded to a 4090/13900K I get stutters and freezes quite often. It's not often enough to make me quit but its super annoying. My feeling is that the game is not optimized for the latest processors/GPUs, it's almost like they are too fast for the game and the game time base is getting desynced with the hardware or something like that. I've tried so many things, setting Ecores with Process Lasso and esoteric stuff like that but very little effect.
Yeah that’s an interesting theory. It is really bizarre. I’ve switched to an SSD install now and tried the same race last night. It certainly hasn’t fixed it, but it has made it better. 3-4 big stutters a race, rather than 3-4 a lap! But still not ideal.
Jesus. What's going on with you lately? Churning out 3 or 4 videos in quick succession? I get the odd stutter in ACC but I'm only running a 4Gb RX570. But the stutters were worse before I upgraded from a Ryzen 5 2600 to a 5800X3D. I think you posted your spec a while ago and it seemed pretty decent. Sounds like it's your 1% lows just with this particular title.
Haha, yeah I’ve had quite a bit of free time this week and weekend, so I’ve taken full advantage of it! No doubt will be back to my ‘one a week’ schedule next week. It’s been frustrating because I know how well it ran and looked in the past, but nothing I do now seems to cure it. It’s not a massive issue, as it’s not like there aren’t plenty of other sims out there that run fine. But I do enjoy the odd rF2 outing.
BTCC is the main reason I wanted to come back. Had an absolute blast racing those cars on LFM last year, and thought it’d be good to race them again. Currently my online ranking is too low, and is only getting lower after the DNFs trying to sort this screen issue!

Could your problem be related to a connectivity issue with the rFactor servers? Maybe packet loss on your home network?

Good to know it’s not just me, and your PC is a higher spec than mine too. It’s really frustrating, particularly when I know it USED to run perfectly.
It's absolutely crazy if it can run properly on such a system!
Nice Vid Chris! How about you try some oval racing in iracing for a change?
Yeah I won’t rule it out! I did try one a year or two ago and failed spectacularly 🤣 but probably about time I gave it another shot.
Great video again Chris! Is there not a UI mod for rFactor 2? That UI is absolutely hideous! 😂
There are several. I was using RaceLab, but the overlays are one of the things I’ve ditched to help ease the performance issues. But you’re right… rF2 HUD is terrible 🤣
Simhub is good for a track map and radar. Racelab is good for relative/leaderboard, flags, blind spots, etc

Make sure you have fps sync off in nvidia control center. That worked for me
I assume you restricted the number of sound effects in the setting to a lower number?
No, I didn’t even think of sound effects having an impact! Good shout… I’ll give it a try later, thank you 😃
