- In this video I turned a bowl out of a giant ball of fir wood. This growth grew around a limb creating the shape.

Hi my name is Carl Jacobson,
I started woodworking with my grandfather as a young boy. I continued woodworking through high school, and started woodturning after seeing a turned project in a friends shop. Some of my fondest memories are working with my grandfather in his wood shop. Being able to share our passion for woodworking, ties it all together. We also do a lot of epoxy projects as well as woodturning.
Carl that turned out really smart considering what you started with, great job.
Thank you Alan!
Really different. It turned out really well. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you John!
That's wild! Love it.
Thank you!!
A very interesting piece of work, nicely turned by you. I like the narly look. I'm glad you left as much of the exterior surface as you could. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
Thank you very much Glen! See you soon
It looks like a huge gaul. They grow on pine trees, but I've never seen one that large. We find them over by Dimond Lake. They're usually between loly pop and orange size.
I looked them up I think that's what it is just a large one.
@CarlJacobson really large.
Whatever it is, it's quite unique! What a project 😮
Thank you James!
Its either a gall or a burl. But still unique and amazing work making it into a Fir Ball Bowl! I feel sad for all the lost wood to the careless forest fires now, like that Park fire. Really appreciate the wood turnings you provide us!
Thank you very much! Yeah the fires seem to be getting worse every year.
Very nice work on a strange and heavy piece. You made it look great!
Thank you very much Ken!
Very nice a great piece of wood, it turn out beautiful.
Thank you David!
Very interesting piece of wood. Neat how it turned out. Bet the shop smelled great while you were turning that.
Thank you Mark! Yes it still smells great 🙂
cool look, one of a kind - and well done.
Thank you buddy!
I love it, big and beautiful, good work mate, great example to a turner like me who lacks confidence attacking awkward pieces, highly appreciated.
Thank you very much John!
Wow, that's quite a bowl Carl! Hope that all is well with you guys! 👍👍
Thank you Steve!

Thank you!

It's perfect for Halloween candy. Just nice enough to use, just creepy enough to be fun. Cool!
Thank you 🙂
Well that is different! Nice work!
Thank you buddy 🙂
Nice work on a wonkie log - as always great work
Thank you Phil!!
Bowl? Dude put a handle on that, and you've got a bucket. Thanks for the videos. 😎
😂 Steve!
That is pretty cool crazy bowl. I would still call that growth a burl.
Thank you John!
That's really nice, Carl. It looked like it was beating you up a lot at the beginning.
